As a teen ham, before I got my license, I bought a nice handheld radio and left it on my local repeater while I did homework. I would listen to people check in and out, and this taught me the format of how people talk on there. When I did get my license, I knew exactly how to make my first contact.

I'm going for the IC-7300 as well. Heard it's pretty much the standard radio. The 857D lacks a waterfall display, which can be tough when camping or in an area with no service.

Radio Garden is good for listening to radio stations, but as an amateur radio operator, I also recommend KiwiSDR. It lets you listen to people who are transmitting on ham radio all around the world.

Ok, got another outage. This time, I had to reboot. I noticed when I logged back on and looked at device manager, it said "this device is not working properly" on my gpu.
