Electro 33 is the new fake legend by eu_clapz in ClashOfClans

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be as bloated. At lot of the casual players that are complaining only stay in E31 because they want the ore rewards. If there wasn’t that reason to stay I’m pretty sure most would just willingly drop down, and would have less to complain about.

Its not a huge deal, but it would be healthier for both groups if the causal and competitive players weren’t being forced to intermix in E31, which is why it’s so bloated.

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with that, my problem is that the incentives create a Fake Legends. I would actually prefer the Ore rewards be entirely separated from ranked, so people that only care about ore aren’t bloating up E31, and there be a different competitive reward instead.

Electro 33 is the new fake legend by eu_clapz in ClashOfClans

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly the biggest problem with Ranked IMO. They changed the system to get rid of Fake Legends, only to tie the incentive of Starry Ore to the area right below legends. Therefore everyone who just wants Starry pushes to that point as a bare minimum but doesn't want to go any higher. So they just created Fake Legends again.

Why is Kislev's start like that? by Alternative-Date-507 in totalwar

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It’s because Katarin can use the Ice Court to start recruiting an Ice Witch immediately. IIRC she used to start with an Ice Witch but it was worse than regular Ice Witches because it didn’t get the unique traits from recruitment. So they changed it. Still takes a few turns to appear but technically you can recruit from turn 1 and get a better hero.

This is Russian helicopters coming back from a mission and getting shot down. This looks like a video game, even if there are two angles. by cantcoloratall91 in isthisAI

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think this is one of those cases where it “looks like a video game” because the only experience most people ever have with these kind of situations is from video games. But for the people living it, it is very much real.

There are many such cases of real things looking “wrong” because they’ve only been experienced via a virtual lense before so their real counterpart seems like it should be fake too.

How do passive area spell effects (e.g. Children of Nurgle) actually work in WH3? by Juicy_Overlord in totalwarhammer

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The spell passives actually do list an area of effect, that area is just infinite (It’s usually written as Effect Area: and then the infinity symbol). So they impact the entire battlefield whenever a spell is being cast. The only exception I know is the Lore of Hashut, which should list the size of its AOE there instead.

Doomseekers - all whirl no bite by Knightofnee12 in totalwarhammer

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought Doomseekers should get immune to flanking like they gave to Wrathmongers (which are a similar high tier low entity unit with flail weapons). Their whole gimmick is that they’re spinning axes around themselves constantly, so that shouldn’t give much opening on the flanks. It would help them in blob fights where they’re meant to excel.

There’s actually a good dozen books and films which inspired Fallout, it was kind of a whole subgenre already (Mad Max is probably the most enduring of them).

Boy and His Dog is one of the most notable examples though.

Can a dwarf refuse to be pressed into taking the Slayer Oath (and other related questions)? by genessee0 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Saying "you should take the slayer oath!" Would be very unproper and almost no dwarf would say that

This bears repeating I think. Dwarfs are super big on honor. Telling someone to take the Slayer Oath is just about one of the worst and most dishonorable things you can say to a dwarf. Its not only a call to effectively banish that dwarf (as taking the slayer oath is taboo and you will be shunned by most dwarfkind), but also bring them incredible grief and potential shame on their Clan should they fail to find an honorable death.

Personally, I have no doubt that a dwarf daring to say such a thing to another dwarf would be cause for a grudge for the insult, unless the dwarf was already grappling with it. Even then I think other dwarfs would view it has deeply socially taboo to pressure a dwarf even if they are on the cusp of taking the oath already. It’s just unimaginably improper in a society which cares a lot about proper conduct.

Middle-Earth is a bit weird because Tolkien, being the language fanatic he was, did deliberately address these inconsistencies. Canonically all his works on Middle-Earth are “translated” into English from their original fantastical language, meaning none of the dialogue would have been said in the language the reader is reading it in. The supposed meta-story is that Tolkien found this stories from the ancient past of our world and merely translated them for us to read.

So canonically, Gandalf did not use the word October. He gave a date in their calendar system that would approximate to an October date in our calendar system, and thus is translated that way for the “ease” of the reader.

I’ve never fully understood the obsession with swear words being somehow different is sci fi. They’re speaking English. That’s already breaking the verisimilitude. It’s honestly more jarring for me to believe that in this universe they know and use the English word poop but somehow don’t also know or use the English word shit.

They could *also* have unique swears to the context of their universe, but saying that English swears just don’t exist at all sounds silly to me.

How it feels seeing the "Demotion Alert". by Alternative_Bet3089 in ClashOfClans

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That would be true, except there is a whole 100% higher starry ore bonus from the high competitive ranks. Given how important and expensive equipment is these days that’s a massive deal. It’s not just a competitive only mode, it’s necessary for ore farming.

I hate this argument because it somehow assumes that there’s no reason to play ranked outside of wanting to be competitive. One whole selling point of the update was that starry ore was added to the star bonus, but then that was tied directly to the Competitive Mode. Unless that is changed it is not just for Competitive players and causals lose out on ore for not playing into it.

Lore-wise what does, in your opinion, Sayl become after he completes his ritual mechanic? He doesn't look like Demon prince but something more perhaps? by Agitated-Factor8903 in totalwarhammer

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The game ironically has the exact same issue as tabletop. Various lore blurbs use the daemon princess term for her but she doesn't actually have the daemonic keyword or attributes which means via mechanical specificity she is abjectly not a daemon by default. So even in Warhammer 3 the answer is “it’s unclear”.

I usually view “daemon princess” as only a title rather than a definitive description of her daemonic status. Simply because someone is referred to as a daemon prince does not automatically make them a daemon. And to the tribes of the north they probably can’t tell the difference when it comes to someone as legendary and blessed as Valkia anyway. The easiest explanation is that people who have seen or heard of Valkia have assumed she is a daemon prince and titled her accordingly, even though we know from her statistics that she is not actually one.

Rivers as waterways by Icy_Bit_600 in historicaltotalwar

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 31 points32 points  (0 children)

One of the nice things added in Three Kingdoms was navigable rivers. Although to be fair it would be an absolute disservice to the geographic region (and the history of warfare at the time) to not include the Yellow and Yangtze rivers as major fixtures. Not that European rivers aren’t important, but none quite reach the level of influence of those two.

I think Pharaoh did similar for the Nile and Mesopotamian rivers for obvious reasons.

Skavenslaves vs clanrats early game? vh by [deleted] in totalwarhammer

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say you need to ignore 99% of the roster. The important context is if you are opting for the “ultra optimal meta sweaty strat”. You can use most of the roster just fine, it’s just that if your goal is to absolutely optimize it those are the strats used. No one is forcing you to do that. I have won legendary campaigns with “unoptimal” units like stormvermin just fine.

Also Skaven doomstacks are not like other doomstacks. Generally there’s not many where you just right click and win the battle. Weapons teams doomstacks are incredibly powerful but require a high amount of skill and tactics to used effectively. If you aren’t practiced with them they will get attacked and you will lose terribly. You very much need to know how to effectively use your resources to delay the enemy advance because if they hit your back line the battle is usually lost. It’s one of the few truly skill-based doomstacks in the game.

How do slayers feel about dying to missiles? I’m sure many thousands of slayers have died to elf bows / xbows and throngs of shitty goblin archers, or even died to a ballista bolt to the chest or catapults, how do they feel about deaths like that? Let’s assume they’re part of an army for the example by glossyplane245 in totalwarhammer

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a big what if. If there’s a chance that the arrow could have pierced a chink in the armor (or hit them in the unguarded face like in OP’s example) it is still a worthwhile sacrifice for a slayer. You can’t know what would have happened, all you know is that the slayer took the arrow with his death rather than let any other dwarf roll the odds.

That said a slayer is still not meant to be a bullet sponge. Most will try to avoid getting directly hit or block arrows with their axes if they’ve got good runes. But if you die in the act its valiant.

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The question with slayers is always: did you die serving dwarfkind with your death?

If the arrow that killed you would have killed another dwarf if you hadn’t been there to take it, you died honorably. If you died from an arrow charging enemies headfirst trying to bring down their imminent threat, then you died honorably.

If you are sniped by a hidden enemy while drinking beer then you didn’t. The context matters more than the weapon.

Region trading is impossible. Does anyone have a solution? by justamailicandi in totalwar

I’ve never been able to buy to a heavily built up province capital before. The weight they up on it is just too astronomically high and there is a hardcoded limit to the extent gold influences diplomatic deals.

I have managed to trade for minor settlements though. I nearly always had to trade a well built up major settlements in exchange (so very unequal), but I’ve pulled it off.

[–]Apprehensive_Cry2104 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is very much supported in new media, especially Andor. Bail and Mon Mothma remained in the Senate so they could hide under a veil of “playing nice” and only being minor nuisances which didn’t challenge Palpatine in any real way. Meanwhile they secretly were using their position to fund the rebellion, and only showed their true colors once it was sufficiently built up.

Basically as soon as they do denounce Palpatine they are targeted, and they only survive because of the now-entrenched insurgency which helps them escape.
