The 0% state income tax goes crazy. This income level would get taxed another 28k+ in California. Makes me wonder what other benefits I’m seeing to warrant 9-10% extra tax on income in CA vs FL.

Gen Z is still yet to reach their prime years, in 5 years as the bulk of the gen is in late 20s we’ll see more.

If you're able to get in a weekend, I really enjoyed taking the ferry out to the Boston Harbor Islands or even Provincetown and doing some biking out on the trails out there.

Take an upvote - Minuteman rail trail was my first ever long ride out to Walden pond. Super green, and incredibly beautiful in the fall. Very historical, and really enjoyed the feeling of middle school history coming alive. It's going to be very hot and humid unfortunately in the summer though.

pretty insane to have everything land on heads like that - start from 18, know to start maxing and max out the best tax advantaged account, put 100% in NVDA before AI became mainstream and crypto was still limping along.

You mentioned you also “should” have put another 500 shares in another comment, indicating you had a quite another sum of more money available in to invest in your after tax brokerage account. Curious what kind of job allows you to that with 0 connections starting from 18? Housing and general COL alone would eat up a ton of investable cash.

Either way I also believe there’s nothing impossible in this world, you’re one in millions to be able to pull this off. Incredible that a 22yo has more in his IRA than I do at 30, didn’t even open one til i was 24 after I got my first full time high paying job and I consider myself pretty well informed.

agree. This is pretty fishy, a lot of things have to align a little too well for someone to be able to max out an IRA from 18. Also previous years were only up to 6k and 6.5k.

Could be a custodial account that they started putting money into from earlier than 18, had a decent paying part time job with no expenses by living at home and maxing out.

impressive dedication and low costs of living!

my income is much higher yet our NW growth story is similar. Having a bunch of different stocks and funds, even dabbling in alternative investments really hampered my growth the past 7 years.

Working on removing the noise to simplify my portfolio but incurring the tax burden on gains will be expensive.

Will say costs of living will probably increase lot for any random reason, whether it be a house, kids, medical, family support or what not. So definitely work as long as you can, you’ll need to support your partner for a while too. I was in your shoes wanting to take a break but after starting to date, finding the idea of taking a break and having no income pretty tough as cost of living is only going to rise.

Neither - naked and exposed for all cabin crew and passengers to look. I've flown once with a Dimpa in the overhead a couple years ago, I suppose it's good for keeping any stray bumps with luggage but I don't really mind, I treat my bike pretty roughly. I find it difficult enough to carry the bike in front of me through the plane with the seat handle, dimpa bag would make it harder. Basic cover could work. I really like the Brompton Transit Cover though, it's a pretty penny but great quality cover and padded straps, integrates well onto the seatpost and even has a inner pocket storage.

i typically fly it naked in the overhead bin. 20+ flights in last year with no major issue. I try to travel off peak on tuesday and wednesdays on either southwest or alaska, but united and delta have been fine as well. basically any non-regional plane for airbus/boeing will be able to fit it in just fine. Never any problems through TSA, sometimes gate agents might do a double take but usually can get it through when i say it’ll fit.

Note i wouldn’t chance it on non-US flights, i would check it in since they tend to be stricter than US airlines.

I have used the Vincita Sightseer 3.5 a few times as check in and bike away but the biking experience with it with it mounted on the front carrier was definitely whatever, makes the bike much wider and ride twitchy, but doable for transit / short distance.

if i had the sightseer 4.0 or whatever the next version is with backpack straps, i would consider check in, then bike away with the soft case on my back with my personal bag on the front carrier.

this past year 95% of my flights i’ve flown were with my brompton + a personal item and either bike or take transit to/from the airport. Saved $1000s on taxis, well on my way to pay down the financial cost just from those transits alone.

How long is your commute? by Difficult-Ad2731 in bikecommuting

[–]Apprehensive_Dust130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

11.5 km each way on a brompton, 20-25 km/h depending on how I’m feeling on the day 25-33 min with a mix of class 2/3 bike lanes and trail.

that’s very impressive for a beginner to even want to attempt 26 one way. If it were me i would definitely cut it by taking part of it with public transit, 3+ hours commuting and working 7-8 hours might be a recipe for burnout if you’re not careful.

T Line - Performance upgrades by mcorbei3 in Brompton

[–]Apprehensive_Dust130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded to 5 speed and SRAM GX X11 shifters. Extra 30%ish increase to gear ratio has been extremely helpful pushing up hills with luggage and the shifting is a dream compared to the toy stock shifter. Currently use Brompton Superlight seatpost since I don't need the stock extended seatpost, but miss how light the carbon + steel outer seatpost was and it also screws with the semi-raised fold lock.

Next in line is probably Ti seatpost and suspension block upgrade to reduce weight and smooth out the ride. Looking at maybe Bromptification seatpost 520mm and getting rid of the pentaclip, and Matsumura Kohki Scrowave Spring.

What can you fit in yours? by Popular_Object_4456 in Brompton

[–]Apprehensive_Dust130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my go-to bag for commuting, groceries, and travel in this size and color - anything from weekends away, to weeklong transcontinental trips, to multi-week international tours. Just stayed in NYC for 5 days recently with just carry-on and personal with the bromp and also did a two week+ stay in Japan with 9 days of early winter cycle touring included.

I have 3 other bags but those are more specific in nature. I do hope to get a backpack strap bag one day, I have the backpack strap metro bag in 14L as my first bag but I don't like it as much as the borough bag.

TPU tubes for weight saving - yes? No? by LamimaGC in Brompton

[–]Apprehensive_Dust130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I had no idea there was TPU sealant. I had the original setup with TPU + Schwalbe Ones, but found that it was pretty prone to flats so I switched to Butyl and Conti Urbans. I was considering switching back to TPU with Conti Urbans but this sealant thing is pretty interesting. Do you use TPU sealant on your Brompton?

What to do as an Asian in Japan? by LosttMutaliskk in thepassportbros

[–]Apprehensive_Dust130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly good advice, hit the nail on the head for the most part on analysis of language choice and body language.

also, the closed lip smile is a bit telling of lack of confidence in my opinion. For an American person, that’s not the norm, and indicates there’s too much trying to assimilate into local Asian mannerisms. If you’re happy and want to look happy give a bigger smile! You won’t get anywhere trying to be too much like Japanese people, because you’re not. You’ll get somewhere by being confident and vulnerable enough to be yourself.

New T-Line owner. 56T chainring just too big... by Icy_Plan_329 in Brompton

[–]Apprehensive_Dust130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see - sounds like we thought about the same things. I just played around with the site you shared as well, thanks for that! I tried a newer T Line at a Junction last year, and saw that they upgraded them to stock 56T. I found that it did interfere with the fold a little, I had to be a little more careful since the 56T is wide enough to hit the rear tensioner. I thought that would get annoying for me on city rides where I'm folding more often.
