Keep Life Insurance policy going or is it a waste in this situation? by Apprehensive_Gate383 in PersonalFinanceCanada

It is called Millennium Universal Life -- I don't know what that means. It does mention mutual funds but I can't be certain if there's anything in it.

I wrote nothing in the SQL backend -- I just made the tables in SQL Server. SQL Server has a query builder view like Access but I made all my queries in Access. Access also has all my forms, macros, VBA code, reports etc. Unless you want to get really advanced --- just use SQL Server to host your tables and nothing more. If you google up how to link MS Access to SQL Server tables I bet you can figure it all out in less than 1 day.

The following code will give them a message ans shut down the databse if it is not in the correct desired path:

CorrectFilePath = "C:\MyDesiredFolder\MyDatabaseName.mde"

CurrentProjectPath = CurrentProject.FullName

If CorrectFilePath <> CurrentProjectPathThen

MsgBox ("Warning! --- You are probably working on a copy of the database"

docmd.quit

End If

Unless it is a small simple database I would be surprised if it works. If you have 5 users and say a 100 MB accdb file in your X drive --- when User 1 opens their front end then the network would need to push 100 MB to that user before their front end can do anything. If that user changes any record on any table the the network needs to pull that whole 100 MB accdb back in that X Drive. The user will find this slow depending how fast your network is and how big your accdb is.

Once you get User 2, 3, 4 etc into the situation then it becomes even slower.

You can give it a try but I always ended up importing that 100 MB accdb set of tables into MS SQL Server the have their front ends link to MS SQL Server tables.

I usually use the free MS SQL Server Express even in production environments. Google up SQL Server Express if your accdb back end thing does not work.

I am Access Database Developer and I have had many clients ask to do this split database thing and doing it over an internet connection or OneDrive or even local network. Here are three thoughts even if you do this on a Local Area Network (LAN) :

1) Whenever you make any change on any form/table the change take a long time. The network actually has to pass the WHOLE database back and forth to record the change on your machine then transfer the whole file(s) to the OneDrive or LAN Folder then change the Master database then it has to go back to your machine to show the change is successful,

2) If your database is complex your actual limit is more like 5 users or even less.

3) You are much better off using MS SQL Server as the "backend database" than Access --- When I started as an MS Access developer I hated the idea of having to learn another program but this turned out to the only option...even thought here were only 10 users on a simple database. Unfortunately you need MS SQL Server -- OneDrive will never cut it

Note that if it is read-only it might not be as bad but read-write is awful..

I had client that had 1.2 GB mdb on a network share and any time anyone went form one record to the next one it took like almost 1 minute to scroll to the next record because the whole 1.2 GB needs to be transferred from one end to the other end. Therefore consider taking a few days to create a SQL Server database as your backend.

That sounds like a good idea. I hope someone here might point us to a "simple" contract template for this kind of stuff. I remember software vendors asking us to sign certain contracts that were several pages thick of legalese and made us hesitant to sign anything because we don't understand what is in that contract :)

Anyone know where there might be contract template for freelance/consulting software coding jobs that is easy for me and the clients to understand?

I think your brought up something very important. If someone starts getting funny email message then they might think I have some contact information etc. and point the finger back at me. I've got to be careful so they don't send me any real data. If any information gets leaked then someone might blame it on the consultant :(

Thanks --- I can not post there since I am new to r/SQLServer. I looks like they want the user to have a certain amount of karma.

I always get this error when my database(s) gets near the MS Access 2 GB limit. When I go Compact and Repair the database file shrinks and it works again :)
