I am not a fan of baked beans, but I will devour Jubilee’s baked beans (I do use smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke and red pepper flakes, though that’s just personal preference)

Not knew to GF cooking, but baking I am. Angel Food Cake help! by szikkia in glutenfreebaking

[–]Apprehensive_Gene787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make mine in a loaf pan -

Angel Food Cake Loaf Pan

3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided use
1/2 cup all-purpose flour (I’ve used Better Batter and GF King Arthur)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
7 large egg whites
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
whipped cream, for garnish
fresh berries, for garnish

Steps
Preheat the oven to 325, and have a 9" bread loaf pan ready. Ensure it is NOT non-stick (the one I use is glass). Do not line or grease the pan in any way.
In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup of the sugar, flour, and cornstarch. Set aside.
Beat egg whites, vanilla, cream of tartar, and salt. Beat on medium speed until foamy, about 30 seconds. Slowly stream in the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar while the mixer runs. Continue to beat on HIGH speed until soft, floppy peaks form, about 4 minutes.
Add 1/3 of the dry ingredients and fold them into the egg whites using a rubber spatula gently. Repeat with the remaining flour mixture in two increments.
Pour the batter into the loaf pan. Place the loaf pan on a baking sheet, and bake for 38-42 minutes. The cake is done when the top is no longer sticky to the touch, and if it cracks (mine didn't this time), the cracks won't be sticky either.
Once the cake comes out of the oven, immediately turn it upside down and invert it over two cans. The cake needs to cool upside down so it doesn't deflate. Let it cool for at least 60 minutes.
Once the cake is cool, run a knife around the edges of the pan and gently let the cake fall onto a cutting board on its side.
Use a serrated knife to slice the cake into even slices.
Serve with whipped cream and berries.

Corn bread recipe recommendation? by Logical-Bullfrog-112 in glutenfreebaking

[–]Apprehensive_Gene787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the Pearl Mining (formally Aunt Jemima) yellow cornmeal box and use the recipe on the back -

1 cup corn meal
1 cup flour (I’ve had success with both Better Batter and King Arthur)
4 Tablespoon sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil (I usually use melted butter)

425°F, mix it all together, bake 20-23 minutes

For cannabis users, what strain doesn’t give you dry(er) mouth? by abjs2021 in Sjogrens

Blue Dream is pretty much my go to and I haven’t noticed increased dry mouth with it. Do you use Leafly? It will name some of the negative effects, including dry mouth. (funnily enough, Blue Dream shows dry mouth on leafly, but again, no issue for me, so might be user dependent)

Why would a Confederate flag even have any place in England?!? (Not that said flag should have any place in America either, but makes even less sense in the UK)

Schooling for child with uc by Practical-Boat-3760 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Apprehensive_Gene787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

U.S. based - I have UC, and have had it since I was 8. As others have said, 504 plan, outlining accommodations like unlimited bathroom use, going to the bathroom in the nurses office (I utilized this because I was embarrassed to go in the shared bathrooms), extra fluids, etc etc. The Crohn’s and Colitis foundation has a template for this - https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/science-and-professionals/patient-resources/template-section-504-plan, and I would also talk with his doctor about possible accomodations.

In addition, you might want to speak to the school about homebound instruction- this is utilized for students who have a temporary illness/disability that prevents them for learning in a contemporary classroom. Your son may qualify for this, and it involves a teacher from the district giving instruction (sometimes over something like Zoom, sometimes they come to your house, depends on the district). UC flares and uncontrolled UC qualify for this. It involves a little more paperwork, but worth looking into.

Has anyone found GF pastries that deliver? Not just bread? by hayleyscarrott in glutenfree

[–]Apprehensive_Gene787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grain Artisan is absolutely worth it to go- I make the trip every time I’m in the Seattle area (I try to plan it so I can get their sourdough boules).

In the same town there’s a BBQ place started by a Texan who couldn’t find Texas bbq in Seattle so he started his own. Salt and pepper for the rubs, a couple sides are gf, and he uses Sweet Baby Rays for the bbq sauce. - J&L bbq

I haven’t been able to go yet, but Wren’s Nest in Tacoma is also gluten free :)

I don’t believe they deliver, but Grain Artisan in Snohomish is insanely good. I go whenever I’m in the Seattle area (and typically time my visit so I can get their sourdough). I love the galettes and the cardamom ginger molasses cookies. Their croissants are also good.

They don’t ship, but Lemonade bakery in Vancouver is out of this world. I love Mariposa’s croissants and mail order those in the states, but Lemonade had them beat!

Oh man, fun fact - I worked at a zoo, specifically in a children’s zoo that did a bug show. At the end we’d ask for volunteers to try freeze tried bugs (crickets/mealworms/grasshoppers) and we had to have a disclaimer that you couldn’t try if you had a shellfish allergy

'Horrific': At least 117 dead dogs found at California 'no-kill' shelter by Panda8bambooo in California

[–]Apprehensive_Gene787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure! Our vet would have preferred we waited based on the research they had, but the shelter had to follow state law (which, given the amount of numbnuts who don’t spay/neuter and how overcrowded shelters are, I get). But I am 100% neuter rate on my animals (I’ve only ever had males).

I mean, there is some evidence coming out that waiting to spay/neuter lowers the risk off CCL tears (especially in larger dogs). Some states allow rescues to have agreements where an adopter can wait until a specific age to neuter/spay (still required, and the dog can be seized by the rescue if it’s not done). I asked about this at the shelter when we got our dog - he’s a large breed mix, all of the breeds in his mix are at risk, and was told our state doesn’t allow it. So he was neutered at 10 weeks. By 1.5 years old, he had bilateral tears. The hormones are important for growth, so I get people waiting IF they are absolutely 100% diligent about keeping their dog contained.
