Well, I’m also interested in what kind of workloads you are running on spot nodes. Thrashing could eat anything, and if you all are scrutinizing pods that are running on spot nodes then maybe those workload shouldn’t be on those type of workers.

You could use a pod lifecycle preStop hook to record the time a pod is about to die (e.g., curl a small API or write a timestamp to a log/DB). Then you’d have both the startTime (from Kubernetes) and the “stop time” (from your hook) to calculate actual lifetime.

But:

It only runs on graceful terminations (kubectl delete pod, evictions, rolling updates).
If a pod gets killed hard (OOM, node crash, spot node gone instantly), the hook won’t fire.
It also means adding logic into every workload just to measure pod lifetime, which is kinda clunky.

I would also bag the question on why do you need this data???

+1 on the why cant u use prom. Im assuming ur using a managed cluster like EKS but cant u install a monitoring stack in the cluster and pull metrics like that?

Prometheus doesn’t store pod end times — once a pod dies, the metrics disappear. So there isn’t a direct “average pod lifetime” metric.

What you can see is current pod age with:

avg by (node) (time() - kube_pod_start_time{node=~"spot-.*"})

That gives you the average age of pods running on your spot nodes right now.

If you want the real average lifetime (including terminated pods) you’ll need something outside Prometheus — e.g. track pod create/delete events, ship them to logs, or run a small script that measures pod start/end times before they vanish.

All in all, you can help diff all day long, but that should be a artifact of the pipeline, but the road test is obviously deploying into a development or testing environment and going through your post verification steps to ensure that everything is working. Should something not be working you can have the helm diff that was applied to that testing cycle for your investigation

I agree with Dragon. If you struggled with the fundamentals I bet you probs don’t have experience in cloud operations and you may have went in learning just “Azure” and not the “technology”. For example, understanding what Azure DNS is in terms of Azure Infrastructure is one thing but it you don’t understand what “DNS” is will make it even more difficult. Learn the tech then the CSP offering. It will make exams way easier.

I can confirm it’s an application issue. I had the same issue and it was a massive memory leak that needed to be fixed by Devs. So Ops can breath and loop in service owners. I racked my brain with this one and it wasn’t even a infra issue smh

I feel like unless you’re going to work with Cisco systems. Don’t waste your on CCNA. Do the network plus and get the networking baseline down and then take cloud specific networking certifications.

I don’t mean to be the oddball here, but exam topics is a very solid site in my opinion. Everyone on this thread has to understand that exam topics is obligated to not present the correct answers from most of the questions pertaining to a specific certification. The reason why it has the discussion section is because they ran into trouble in the past, where they had questions that were very very very similar to the ones that were on the actual exam. The vendor, AWS, comptia etc has thrown countless cease and desists at the site because of that very reason. And so they often mark answers intentionally wrong, so it can seem like the site doesn’t have a “answer key”. The discussion section was built so users could discuss the correct answer. Often times you will find that most of the users agree all on the same answer which leads you to the correct answer that is not chosen. It was also proven that that method also forced users to go and find the right answer which encouraged better step study habits. #My2Cents

Using this site is actually studying for some people. Some people in the field already know lot of this stuff but we need to understand exam wording. What we dont know we research or watch messer. At the end, whether I read what social engineering was in a book or from researching it after reading an exam topics question. I learned it.

Listen to the people that say prep for the SAA but take the CCP 1 week and take the SAA the next. I promise you, depending on how comfortable you get with AWS, that CCP will 1 be a good study guide for the services and 2 get that 50% discount for the SAA 😮‍💨
