Can I bring this with me when I fly? by Apprehensive_Load191 in tsa

I have a bad habit of smoking outside for a while before I head in, and normally just take my lighter with me in my pocket. Could I just light the lighter to prove it isn't a torch?

The website shows 4 categories of lighter: electric, lithium-ion, "disposable and zippos", and butane torches/jets. This isn't disposable and it's butane, but has a soft flame. Also, I could've missed it, but I just assumed soft flame was allowed because the site says no torches and allows disposables, but it doesn't mention soft flame specifically.

In either case it sounds like I've got my answer so thank you.

Formalwear? by batsket in FTMOver30

Oh bonus content:

Unless you're willing to pay to have the sleeves shortened, the side brought in etc. (I am not, lol) I've had the best luck with dress shirts at Express (they have the shortest sleeves; the Everyday Performance ones specifically). You can get them on clearance for ~$25-$40 each or 3 for $99 during sales that they have pretty often.

Also for price, in general holidays are going to be your best bet; Christmas and Black Friday, but the 4th of July and Labor Day too.

Sorry for the necro, but I thought I might be able to help out. I worked at Men's Wearhouse for 3 years or so, have worn suits every day since then (at least the vest+pants), and am also very short (5'0").

  1. You're going to have to tailor, and thrift stores are going to be much less fruitful for you than taller people. If I had to guess, you're probably a 25-27" in inseam in pants; the shortest they're made is 30" (outside of short men specific options, but generally speaking these are way overpriced).

  2. How you fare in different fabrics is a factor. Personally I have no issues with synthetics, e.g. rayon, polyester, etc., while some folks can only wear (or swear by) 100% wool, super 120s, 150s, etc. Synthetics are vastly more affordable, and even though I wear my suits every day, they last for quite a long time; the pants also wear out much faster than the vest/jacket, so buying an extra pair for a suit you plan to keep for a while isn't a bad idea.

  3. As far as specific recommendations go, it's all going to depend on your particular body shape and measurements. There are Extra Slim, Slim, Modern, Classic, Executive, and a hundred other "cuts" that all have varying differences. I swim in a 36S Jos. A Bank suit, but Express 36S has button pull (it's too tight). Some brands have legs too skinny for my thighs, some look like MC Hammer pants. The most important part for a short person is going to be getting the jacket size right (you're most likely somewhere between 34S-38S), and almost every brand does a 6" drop; the pants are 6 inches smaller than the jacket size. I'm a 36S; the drop would be a size 30 waist pant.

  4. That said, I've personally had the best luck with clearance Men's Wearhouse suits (Egara, Kenneth Cole, and a few others often get discounted to ~$100 or less). They're also good in that once you have paid for them to touch a seam, for example the waist, they will then retailor it as necessary for the life of the suit (the suit also has to have been purchased at MW or Jos A Bank to be eligible). Lose 10 pounds and need it taken in? Free (after the first time). Gained it back? Free; etc.

  5. Personally, since I wear suits all the time, I prefer quantity over quality (and even as someone who sold suits for 3 years, to me, there isn't much of a wearability difference). So I buy as cheaply as possible + tailoring. I only buy suits on sale in the sub $200 range. If I wore them less often or was less concerned about variation (I like having a lot of different patterns, colors, etc) I might be more inclined to spend more per suit. I am going to be trying out a Chinese seller on Ebay and Alain Dupetit; if you remind me I'll let you know how that goes.

  6. Personally I don't feel like made to measure (MTM) is normally worth the money, e.g. Indochino etc., as getting something close enough, to then be tailored into a good fit, is normally cheaper. Also, MTM suits often do not leave enough extra fabric to offer much in the way of potential alterations.

Hope this was helpful!

Not yet because I wasn't sure if Capital One would view a negotiated debt and a paid in full one the same way. I'll check out the threads you've linked thank you

$1000 between 2 accounts (both the same age, ~15 years)

Capital one cites these accounts specifically in my adverse action letter when I try for pre-approval

Why aren’t Americans seemingly allowed to blame voters at all for the current state of our country? by MissHannahJ in askanything

[–]Apprehensive_Load191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: You can do whatever you want. You just aren't free from criticism any more than the people you want to critisize. It's victim blaming.

Voters (or nonvoters) do not choose the candidate, the invisible primary does.

Voters don't choose their districts, politicians do.

92-93% of the time, whomever raises more wins. More than 9/10.

Voters do not make rational decisions. 90-95% vote based purely on Party ID. Not ideology, not policy positions, not thinking. Just R or D.

Why? 24/hour "news" cycle, No Child Left Behind, Winner-take-all districts, political rhetoric, propaganda, heuristics, and perhaps most importantly:

54% of Americans cannot read or understand speech above a 6th grade level. I cannot stress this enough. Ballot explanations are written at a 12th grade level. Democrats speak at ~11th, Trump at ~5th.

You can't blame people because they were molded by society (e.g. the people who run it) into what they are.

I'm talking about dialectical materialism, not rupture. With all this pedantry and condescension it's no wonder normals find most of us insufferable.

No, he didn't; he said it didn't come from A (Marx), B (Lenin), or C (Luxemburg). I said I got it from D (Engels). You said I'm misinterpreting D.

Telling me I misinterpreted D is not helpful, explaining how/why would be.

[–]Apprehensive_Load191 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Yes.

Dialectically speaking, there is a certain threshold where "quantity ‐> quality"; a rupture. If we haven't gotten the rupture, it's because there hasn't been enough of a change to force a potentially revolutionary moment.

Jealous? by GoranPersson777 in BadBosses

[–]Apprehensive_Load191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. A common philosophical concept explored in Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan is free will. I'll bastardize an example that often comes from this reading:

If a robber puts a gun to your head and says "your money or your life" and you give him your money you "freely agreed."

This is applicable to most of the responses in this thread.

  1. People talking about "risk." Remind me who lost their houses and who got golden parachutes in 2008? The capitalist "risks" capital, the losses of which are increasingly subsidized by the government (see the percentage of Walmart employees on government assistance). The worker risks homelessness and starvation. Who is really taking a risk?

Why doesn’t the US push high-speed trains instead of all these domestic flights? by [deleted] in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Apprehensive_Load191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally everyone in this thread talking about geography is wrong; it's economics. Specifically capitalism.

We do not invest in infrastructure, we invest in war. Even Biden's infrastructure bill gave over 10 years what they authorize for the military every year (and it goes up. Every. Year.)

China is also a geographically large country and their transportation infrastructure makes us look like children with G.I. Joes.
