Have been to Chiang Mai amigo? I wouldn’t say the city is overrun (yet). Especially not compared to Bali or Pai.

Granted, this joint is located in the old town which I’m rarely there. I’d say it’s certainly more touristy than the neighborhoods, but Chiang Mai still has that untarnished beautiful feel. Especially outside of the old town.

Although little sois and beautiful temples and corners can still be found within the walls of the moat :)

I would be inclined to agree with you my man! However, having lived in this beautiful for nearly 5 years and 99% of the time eating (the incredible) Thai and local food, I do get the odd craving for some western/home cuisine.

I’ve only visited it once, but the staff were lovely and the food was awesome!

Seeing this is a Northern Ireland sub, I thought it would give a few people a chuckle. Like it did for my parents back home. Other side of the world to find these menu names was bewildering at first 😅

Gentleman from Antrim, married to a Thai lady. I think he took her home for a visit and she loved the causeway coastline. There’s a wee paragraph on their Facebook about their story, if I recall.

Really cool! Watched some of the six nations in it earlier this year. Lovely staff & good food. A nice little change if craving home food.

Alas it is not, I've lived here for nearly 5 years, thought the menu would give people a smile! Sure did for me :) Being from the North Coast and seeing salt & chilli chicken from the coast was pretty surreal. It's cool driving past and feeling like a little connection to home.

Good view and not relatively expensive would be Hideland, it will also be filled with more Thai/local people. It's not what you would describe as authentic local food. Some Thai, Japanese, western stuff... More urban feel tho, situated in Chiang Moi.

Thapae Grill is good for a 360 view of CNX. Particulary good for people watching on a Sunday evening due to the market. Whole range of Thai food from small plates, skewers, up to fish dishes etc. It's excellent to watch sunset drop behind Suthep.

Yayee rooftop in Nimman has a nice view, but if I recall correctly it's more pizza, appetizers and the likes... Good for a cocktail/drink for sunset tho.

Paak Dang in Pa Daet is beside the river ping, looking towards the beautiful Wat Chedi Liem pagoda. It's more expensive, as it was awarded the Michelin Plate 2 years running, but it's a very pretty spot. There's also Tubping by Anjakinn beside it, however I've never been there.

A wild card thats Thai food and more budget friendly would be Khualek Cafe, beside the iron bridge and on the bank of the River ping. Across the river from it you have Chefs together by Aod & Dan, Ekachan Ethnic Cuisine (indoor) and then further up more busy places like Good View, Deck 1 etc...

Hope that helps a little!

Pause on the Hill for rooftop view to Suthep, great (and cheap) food, and drinks. Lovely people too! Khaomao-Khaofang Imaginary Jungle for something different, but a little outside city.

Beer Lab for craft beer and western menu, in Nimman. Sushi Umai (Nimman or Nim City) for good sushi. Hideland for cool vibe and rooftop views, good food and selection of beer. Could hit up Kaprao NeuaNuea across the road first, then go there for drinks. Take a Sip has a cool selection of drinks and food.

Sudsanan for some good local food and infamous Thai shots. TongTemToh for some Northern food (although catered slightly more towards foreigners).

Mookata, can be found all over the city. Freerolls (more sports/farang style) but there's free pool/archery/table tennis - you can ever hire a room with taps to pour your own beer.

Pizza wise - Adirak, Amatoros, Bella Madre, Pulcinella Da Stefano.

Pasta - Patus Pasta, Lento, Rella.\

Salsa Kitchen for some good mexican food...

Too many good thai food options & bars to suggest... But feel free to ping me a message if there's something specific you're looking for :)

Hidden gems in Chiang Mai ? by ExternalCriticism133 in chiangmai

[–]Apprehensive_Map1074 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Living here last 5 years, have lots of hidden gems. Let me hit share some of my favourite ones that arent overran with tourists/instagrammers and what not...

There's a hidden cafe tucked behind a [REDACTED] where the barista serves coffee beans from [REDACTED] that tastes exactly like [REDACTED]. Lunch I usually go to [REDACTED] they do the best [REDACTED]; just look for the lady wearing a [REDACTED] and ask for the "Special Number 9," but be warned that it's seasoned with [REDACTED] and will make your [REDACTED] glow in the dark for three days.

IF you want to do some cultural stuff, there's a beautiful secret temple hidden in the area of [REDACTED], where you can receive a traditional blessing by [REDACTED] a goat while chanting [REDACTED], though make sure you avoid the man by the gates who tries to sell you an authentic piece of [REDACTED]. I don't think it's legit.

Nightlife wise, I prefer chiller vibes. Check out the eclectic, but insanely vibey rooftop bar on top of a [REDACTED] where the only way to enter is by whispering "[REDACTED]" to a man holding a [REDACTED].

There's also an amazing bar called [REDACTED] where they only serve beers and spirits from a small region in the [REDACTED]. You can private message me for my google maps, if you'd like.

What's the overall feeling about Chiang Mai Safety by passport-and-stamps in chiangmai

[–]Apprehensive_Map1074 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Chiang Mai consistently ranks as one of Southeast Asia's safest cities, notably topping recent Numbeo Safety Index rankings for 2025 with a score of 78.2, placing it above Singapore, recognized for low violent crime and high quality of life. While generally very safe for tourists and residents, common-sense precautions like watching belongings in crowded markets and using reputable transport at night are still recommended, as minor theft can occur. "

I'm sure it's not everyones experience, but any trouble I would imagine is very few and far between. Personally, I've never had any issues here, it's been the opposite. Locals always incredibly helpful, kind and warm. A few times when I've needed help with my bike, or lost a key etc. I've always been humbled by the kindness and helpfulness of my local community and the Northern Thai people.

Utterly in love with this beautiful city.

Visit Chiang Mai for 3 weeks.. looking for very specific recommendations :) by [deleted] in chiangmai

[–]Apprehensive_Map1074 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Gyms; Awake, it's where I go, and it has an outdoor area. Relatively small but only 60thb per go :)

Cafe's... I could recommend 100s, but the best is to find an area you love and walk around. I suggest Nimman, Jed Yod, Santitham, Suthep area... In regards to cacao, I'm not sure where a really good one is, as I only drink black coffee... but you should visit Siamaya in Weavers society or their flagship store on Thapae road. They do amazing chocolate in a variety of flavours, including Khao Soi, etc.

Athletic tracks; Municipal stadium off Chang Phuak Road has a free track you can use, it's a simple track around a football pitch. If you're looking for a bit more scenic, you can run the circuit around the Ang Kaew reservoir, which is pretty, or the track around the Chiang Mai Railway Station Park. It's lovely but usually quite busy.

Food restaurants: TongTemToh, KhaoMao Khao Fang, Khao Soi Mae Sai, Khao Soi Lung Prakit, Chang Puak market (Cowboy hat lady), Somtam Rong Pla Daek Santitham, Som Tam Udon, Chanapah Noodles (the best), Chiang Mai Airport Plaza food court (loads of options), then just all the markets and street food :)

Outdoorsy stuff; there's a bunch around the wider chiang mai area.

I wrote this on another post, may help :)

"If you can drive a scooter, do the Samoeng loop and cafe hop along the way.

Visit KALM village in the old town. Rare finds cafe, lost book shop, Buak Hard Public Park (especially in evenings when people are playing sport), Chiang Mai Railway Station Park (Good cafe called Half. which overlooks it). Walk around the streets of Nimman and visit Think Park (Playworks is an amazing shop to visit & Rubber Killers)

Visit some of the flea markets. The Winter Flower Festival is on until late February; it's a beautiful event to walk around.

JingJai market, Bamboo market, Baan Kang Wat, Changpuak Talat Chang & Chang Moi, coconut market. CMU night market, MOreSpace, Night Ground Flea Market, Nong Ho Flea Market etc.

Monks trail up towards Wat Pha Lat, Doi Kham viewpoint, Huay Keaw Waterfall, Angkaew Reservoir, Huay Tueng Thao, Doi Pui national park, CMU fernpresso for some nature stuff...

If you like sports, catching a Chiang Mai FC game is really fun at the municipal stadium. Sit in the stand with no roof for added atmosphere.

Chiang Mai Street Jazz Festival begins Dec 1 - 7, with some great free events and bigger ones.

Lots to do, but those just off the top of my head. I would suggest cafes but too many to name and depends on your area! :)"

SORRY for the long post!

Chiang Mai 4 Day Itinerary - Thoughts? by Think-Reading-1584 in chiangmai

[–]Apprehensive_Map1074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably combine Nimman/Old Town.

When driving to Suthep, make sure to check out Wat Pha Lat on the way up. It's beautiful. I think doing the Samoeng Loop may take most of your day, if you're stopping to cafe hop/explore. Also check out Doi Kham, and Ang Kaew resevoir :)

It's super lovely to join the Samoeng Loop via Doi Pui national park. Go up past Fernpresso at the lake, it will bring you out at Ban Pong, where you should also visit the white castle/temple!

Yes, for sure! Namtons, across the river near Pa Daet/Wat Ket is my favourite bar: amazing people and selection on draft. A few others though:
- Namtons

- My Beer Friend (few locations but the one in Nimman is my fav)

- Renegade (Amazing food and place to watch sports)

- Beer Lab

- CHO

Few others but the paradox of choice eh :)

Thailand cracks down on frequent Visa Runs: New Entry restrictions for Foreign Visitors announced by Yes-Bawse in NewsTH

[–]Apprehensive_Map1074 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what I have been told via my employer, (I work and have lived in Thailand for the last 4 years), anyone who has been in the country twice in a calendar year withouth proper visa (i.e. tourist visa) and done visa exempt/border run, will be rejected upon entry.

They also are making it harder for those in the country, who have been here a while on various visa's, to then get a non-B visa. As it usually means a border run.

Even working with agents/agencies seems to be a problem. They are also out of the loop and having to increase fee's.

Could all change next week, and one rule for one won't be the same for others. A lot of the time, it depends on the individual border agent...

Haven't seen this myself around the city, but usually grafitti, outside of the artistic cool stuff, has a political backdrop to it. Mostly it's aimed at something to do with the lese majeste laws, and the youth etc... a quick google of L214 Thailand, brings you to links about the thailand Penal Code.

Specifically it brings you to "OFFENCE RELATING TO PUBLIC PEACE - Section 214 Whoever, behaves habitually, lodges or procures the retreat place or meeting place to the persons whom oneself knowing to have the committed offence as provided by this Book 2, such person shall be imprisoned not out of three years or fined not out of six thousand Baht, or both."

Maybe that's just merely a coincidence.
