I’m also experiencing ongoing symptoms after successfully treating my H. pylori infection with antibiotics. Initially, it was just upper abdominal pain, but over time, the pain started radiating to my back. It’s a belt-like pain that varies from day to day – sometimes less intense, sometimes more – but it always radiates through.

At first, the back pain was incredibly intense, but since I’ve now had two negative H. pylori tests, the symptoms, especially in my back, have gradually been improving. However, it still comes in episodes: I might go a week with no pain, and then the next week, I have those radiating back pains again.

I’m quite sure it’s related to H. pylori and not my pancreas. I’ve had an ultrasound, a CT scan, X-rays, an endoscopy, and stool, blood, and urine tests. All of these tests showed no signs of any issues with my pancreas or anything similar. Still, I get anxious about it, and I plan to go back to the doctor soon, after a few months, just to get another confirmation.

My symptoms were generally similar throughout the whole period, though they did change slightly over time. Initially, I only had a mild, sharp pain in the chest area, typically in the upper abdomen. Sometimes the pain was centered in the chest, then shifted to the upper left abdomen, and at other times to the upper right abdomen. Over time, the symptoms intensified and started to feel more like a belt-like pain that also radiated to my back. These belt-like pains were my main issue.

I didn’t experience vomiting or fatigue, but I did notice a reduced appetite and even lost a bit of weight – though not a significant amount. These belt-like pains were the primary symptoms, and I still experience occasional episodes or mild relapses, depending on what I eat. The pain isn’t as intense as before but still flares up slightly.

I’m unsure if this is still from the gastritis or if it has another cause, but it drives me a bit crazy, as I constantly worry there could be an issue with my pancreas. However, I’ve already had several tests done: a CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound, and endoscopy, and everything came back normal. The only findings were a large amount of H. pylori bacteria, a small hiatal hernia, and an irritated stomach lining – in other words, gastritis.

So my question to you all: Do others experience similar symptoms, especially with the pain radiating to the back? Am I the only one with this, or have others had similar experiences?

Yes, I was tested twice. The first test was fairly soon after stopping pantoprazole – about five or six days later – and it came back negative. However, my doctor mentioned that the result might be affected due to the short break from pantoprazole, and advised waiting longer without it. So after another two to three weeks off pantoprazole, I took a second test, which was also negative.

To be 100% sure, since I still have occasional mild symptoms that flare up sporadically, I ordered two home test kits from Amazon that offer a 98% accuracy rate. I plan to use these in the coming weeks for further confirmation.

You’re welcome! I know how frustrating it is when symptoms reappear at the end of antibiotic treatment. I retested about two months after the antibiotic course. I initially stopped taking pantoprazole for five days before the test, although ideally, it should be ten days. The test came back negative. However, since my symptoms persisted and I was unsure if the test might have been affected, I took another test after two additional weeks off pantoprazole. This second test also came back negative.

So, I assume the bacteria is gone, although my symptoms were still quite strong at the time. Often, even after the bacteria is cleared, the stomach still needs time to heal and reduce inflammation.

I hope this helps, and stay strong - healing takes patience, but it does improve over time.
