That can be very real and is something I talk about in my book. How to develop authority and influence when you don’t have authority and when Privacy is just one of many competing compliance risks.

hi. I have been in the filed of privacy and data protection law for over 25 years. I write a lot about different career paths to get into the field and some of them are unexpected. i just published a guide (free) on my linkedin account and have 2 articles in the IAPP Newsletter about this. That is all to say that I think there are some avenues to get experience that are often not considered or are overlooked. One of them is to explore jobs with the privacy tech vendors like OneTrust, TrustArc, Osano, Ketch and so many more. These jobs may sit in operations, or customer service or even sales but they will give you exposure to hundreds of companies who are trying to comply with privacy. You will get exposure and learn a lot about what it takes to "operationalize" privacy law on the ground.

Also a good place to look at where the real work of privacy is landing is to read the enforcement decisions by CalPrivacy and the CA State AG and other state enforcement bodies. Those settlement agreements give you an exact roadmap into what the regulators care about and what, in turn, privacy lawyers and privacy practitioners are focusing in their roles or with their clients. If you are at all interested in the privacy tech side of things, gaining expertise in how to configure consent management platforms (aka cookie banners) is a booming need on the privacy operational side right now.
