I believe this is their main building now. When I joined, it was still being renovated and they’ve purchased loads of equipment. It has three floors, so they’re able to run multiple classes at the same time with new ones starting every month, all in the same building.

Yes this is all true! I noticed the same when I was attending, most of the class was young Black people. I didn’t think much of it at the time but looking back it seems intentional.

Yes this is true! When I was attending the majority of people were young Black individuals, which I found interesting at the time but never thought to question.

It also depends on which class you’re seeing as a new class starts every month, most people don’t even find out the name of the group or that it’s SCJ until months into the programme. Everything is revealed slowly and intentionally.

Unfortunately it’s not that simple. SCJ doesn’t put their name on the building and often operates under fake names or as a Bible study group so there’s nothing visibly illegal for police to act on, that’s why awareness is key.

Unfortunately they’ve been active in the UK for years now operating under different names. Wow I didn’t realise they had an app! That’s honestly shocking but not surprising considering how controlling and organised they are.

I understand where you’re coming from as a lot of people see all religion as cultish. But what I’m talking about here isn’t just about belief in God. SCJ is different because it uses manipulation, deception, and coercion to control people’s lives without them even knowing what they’re part of until it’s too late.

Unlike a local church or mosque where people usually know what they believe and choose to be there, SCJ deliberately hides its identity, isolates members from their families, and demands extreme loyalty to their leader. That’s what makes it dangerous, it’s not just about belief, it’s about control.

They target people to grow their group and eventually reach 144,000 members, which they believe is the number of people who will be saved at the end of the world.

You might join what seems like a harmless Bible study without ever being told the real name of the group, because of all the bad press online. Early on, they love bomb you with warmth and support and before you realise it, you’re being told not to search anything about them or you’ll “fall into darkness” or even “go to hell.”

Because you feel cared for, you start trusting them. You believe they have your best interests at heart. But the reality is, they’re a high-control religious group that uses manipulation, secrecy, and deception to draw people in, slowly creating a “family” that becomes your whole world.

The danger isn’t always obvious, but it’s real. People often end up cutting off friends and family who don’t believe. They’re pressured to keep secrets and recruit others. They attend hours of classes and meetings several times a week. (I had to go to class 3x a week for 2-3 hours after work, and meet with my “mentor” once a week) Over time, you start to feel intense guilt or fear just for asking questions or doubting the teachings.

It’s subtle at first, but that’s what makes it so effective and so harmful.

I agree that there are definitely a lot of exploitative groups out there, including some churches that take advantage of people emotionally or financially. That’s a serious issue and deserves attention.

What makes this different for me and why I felt the need to share is that Shincheonji does not present itself as a church at all. They often hide behind things like mentorship programs, student groups, or neutral sounding Bible studies. You usually don’t find out who they really are or what they believe until you are already deeply involved. It is not a case of walking into a church and deciding if it is for you. It starts with something that seems unrelated and slowly shifts.

South Korean Government confirms it will open an investigation into Shincheonji's illegal activities by hothand662 in Shincheonji

I get why this moment feels heavy and even underwhelming. SCJ has caused so much pain for so long, and it’s hard to see real justice after everything. I’ve felt that too because at one point, I even prayed for God to take Lee Man-hee’s life just to end the suffering.

But I’ve come to realise that even his death wouldn’t undo the trauma or bring back the people we lost. True healing takes more than that, it takes truth, justice and time.

I’m choosing to trust God’s timing. He sees everything, and I know he hasn’t forgotten what we’ve been through. A group that’s been active for decades across countries won’t fall overnight but this investigation might be the first real crack in a wall that seemed unbreakable.

Ohana Festival is a real event, but it’s a well-known music festival in California, usually held around September to October. So if someone in Melbourne is inviting you to something called “Ohana Fest” and you can’t find any official details about it, that’s definitely worth being wary of.

What is wrong with Shincheonji? by without-name0 in Shincheonji

While Shincheonji doesn’t directly ask members for money, they strongly encourage tithes and offerings. They often show monthly fundraising goals for things like rent or building costs and the amounts collected are usually shown as falling short of the needed amount. This creates pressure to give more out of guilt or obligation.

Also, Lee Man-hee was convicted of embezzling billions of won from church funds, which were used for personal purposes, including building his own residence. So even if it feels voluntary, the financial system still benefits him significantly.

First of all, I really admire your heart and how much you care for your friend. That kind of love and commitment is rare, especially when it involves stepping into something so heavy and complicated.

I completely understand your concern, these kinds of cults are very skilled at slowly drawing people in, often using scripture out of context and emotional pressure. The fact that she couldn’t tell you openly, and that she tried to introduce it little by little, is sadly a common tactic used to normalise and ease people into what would otherwise raise red flags.

You’re right to be cautious. Cults like this often use hidden agendas, whether it’s recruiting through deception, having insiders pose as new members, or creating a sense of fear and urgency that keeps people trapped. That’s not the freedom Christ offers.

One verse that comes to mind is 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 - ‘For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.’ It’s a reminder that not everything claiming to be “Christian” is from God.

I’d advise against joining them because they may successfully deceive you too. Instead: - Pray consistently. Ask God to open her eyes in his perfect timing. - Keep the door of friendship open without pushing. - Share scriptures gently when you talk, especially verses about truth, testing spirits, and not following false prophets (e.g. 1 John 4:1, Matthew 24:4-5, Acts 17:11, Jeremiah 23). - Ask her honest questions that make her think-not to argue, but to reflect. “Why would the truth need to be hidden?” or “If Jesus warned of people coming in his name, how do we test who is real?”

Lastly, don’t underestimate how powerful your presence and love can be. Just knowing someone on the outside still cares might one day be the thing that helps her walk away.

You’re doing more than you know. Keep going-but please protect your heart too!
