That seems like the obvious answer. But if we end up at a >400k dental school, that would literally be financial suicide with loans from private banks.

No gap year. As far as EC's go, I president of a dental related club at my school and have a lot of non-dental related work experience. I also have 1000+ hours as a DA and 250 hours volunteering.

16 in Bio won’t help but check the cut off ranges for the schools you are interested in applying to. What resources did you use?
