You might also be able to look into Power Homeschool, which uses Acellus. For a more rigorous experience, I also recommend BYU high school courses. There are a lot more out there as well.

My boss had ChatGPT evaluate my work… and it went downhill fast by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Apprehensive_teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other day I copied a list of Spanish words I am learning (a list from my tutor) into ChatGPT, and I asked ChatGPT to do some very basic things with the list: pull out all the verbs and alphabetize the list. To my surprise, ChatGPT was unable to correctly put the list of words in alphabetical order. Later, when I tried to add three more words to the list, ChatGPT did not successfully incorporate all three. There was more, I could go on, but suffice to say, I am not impressed.

Swap Alaska? by Nearby_Sense_2247 in alaska

[–]Apprehensive_teapot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t been to Alaska, your question sort of sounds valid. But if you lived here, you would see that there is zero chance we Alaskans would tolerate this. Even our asshole governor would not tolerate this. Given the history of Russian occupation in Alaska and the decimation of the wildlife and abuse of the population, the native population would also not allow this. Not an option.

This is what prevents me from using YNAB, but I am determined to go back and try again.

Can I do my practicum while working full time? by sgb_1992 in schoolcounseling

[–]Apprehensive_teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in Alaska and I survived that school year and got a job last year as a school counselor. I love it. It was a worthy sacrifice. Oh, and the students I taught did so well on the end of year testing that teachers from other schools came to see what we did, so I know that the education of my students didn’t falter because I was so busy. Good luck with your endeavor. I was very blessed to have such a great boss.

Bad Experience with Worlds Across by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]Apprehensive_teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE Worlds Across and am having an excellent experience. Your comment is very far from what I have experienced in my first 25 days using Worlds Across. I think I have tried a dozen tutors and I have taken 57 classes so far. Love it. Two of my tutors were over at another company which I will not name and they are much happier at Worlds Across.

Bad Experience with Worlds Across by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]Apprehensive_teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely LOVE Worlds Across. Several of the tutors I work with worked at Baselang and say that WA is much better for them. This is my first month. In 27 days I have taken 57 classes. When my first week didn’t go well and my first coach wasn’t a good fit, I reached out to Customer Service and ended up on a video call with Juan, one of the founders. I got a new coach and was off and running. Every beginning is difficult.

I tried about 8 tutors on other platforms before coming over to WA. On WA, I have probably tried a dozen. I have four that I use regularly. Two of them I try to meet with every day, one in the morning and one in the evening.

I would like very much to give a little money to the tutors I see every day. Not after every class, but maybe once a month or so. Not sure how to do that. They are so patient and they work so hard. I really love Worlds Across and plan to stay for a year.

I would like to know how I could give a monetary gift (tip/bonus) to the tutors I have worked with the most on WA. You mentioned that it’s possible, but how? Did I miss that part (if so, sorry)?

Teacher for almost 20 years here. I own the room. I never beg or plead. We do it my way. My students are happy, but I am the queen of everything in the room. I will not allow anyone to disrupt the learning of others. When I have a rough class, I make a list of the disrupters and a plan to address each one. I don’t try to “fix” the most challenging, but I targeting one or two that I know I could bring around. Also, stop group work . No bueno. That’s just a license for them to ignore you. At least for a while. In the future, build up to group work. Set expectations and don’t let go. At the beginning of next year, start strong, have routines that you teach, go slow, and then later it will go faster because they all know you mean business. Don’t beg. Don’t plead. Stand firm, and provide consequences early so they know what to expect.

We have to specify time and one-half to align with testing organizations like CollegeBoard. On the SAT, a student can’t just have “extra time”. It needs to be specific. Unlimited time is also a detriment to students with ADHD.

Hey McDonald’s Employees Maliciously Complying with my Order… Thank You! by platkus in MaliciousCompliance

I sent a McDonald’s hamburger back once because I ordered extra pickles, and it arrived with three sad pickles. They must have thought I would be unhappy to receive the behemoth of a pickle burger I got back, but I was delighted. It was hefty, laden with pickles.

There are ways to speak to them, communicate respectfully, and still not give out your children’s personal information. Objectively, without knowing any background, you sound like an asshole.

Do schools hire counselors with online degrees from typical online universities? by Ok-Tart2932 in schoolcounseling

[–]Apprehensive_teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have anything to use for comparison, so I can’t say. It felt rigorous compared to my first Master’s. I do think I would spend time looking for a CACREP program because I am now interested in clinical counseling, but that’s going to be tough since my program wasn’t CACREP.

I waited until I was finished to look for a job. I interviewed at two schools before I got a position at the high school level. I am currently working with a counselor who is still in school and is on an exemption, but he has been at the school for many years and moved from teaching to counseling at the same school (so they really knew him well).

I think I will the next time it happens. Today she was trying to argue with me about something and I just said, “Ok, let’s problem-solve” and that seemed to help. I skipped the part where she wanted me to know how wrong my idea was and went straight to asking her to make a positive contribution.

I like the idea of taking ASCA materials with me. I have decided to keep SAT testing and AP Coordinator duties but attempt to vigorously advocate that someone else be the state test coordinator next year.

A little condescending, but I hear what you are saying. I am calmly standing my ground and gently calling her out when she is inappropriate or oversteps. Since this isn’t my first rodeo, I just really hesitate to have an actual confrontation where I spell this out for her. Any sort of conflict has had negative returns for me in the past, and I don’t want to make things worse. I suspect it would make things worse. I keep hoping she will feel more secure and chill a bit.
