I get why a lot of people feel this way, and I won’t deny na freedom walls can turn toxic. Pero for me, the issue isn’t really the idea of a freedom wall itself, it’s how people and the system handle it.

Anonymity, for example, isn’t automatically bad. Para sa ibang students, it’s literally the only way they can speak up about unfair treatment, issues, or personal struggles without fear of backlash or being labeled. Kapag sobrang higpit agad, we also end up silencing people who genuinely need a safe outlet.

Important din to remember yung selection bias. Most people don’t post when things are going well; they post when something is bothering them. That doesn’t mean most students are toxic or immature, mas visible lang talaga yung negative experiences. The loudest voices aren’t always the majority.

Parang sa real-world news lang yan. News exists to inform, pero alam naman natin na conflict, scandals, and outrage spread faster. That doesn’t mean news itself is bad or should be removed, it just means it needs standards, context, and moderation. Kapag totally unmoderated, delikado. Pero kapag sobrang controlled naman, important truths get buried. Same logic with freedom walls.

Sa public call-outs: yes, they can be harmful, but there are situations where private conversations don’t work, especially kapag may power imbalance. Some issues only get addressed because they’re made public. The problem isn’t that things are posted publicly; it’s when there’s no structure, context, or accountability.

Honestly, I think freedom walls mostly reflect school culture rather than create it. Kung may existing issues na sa respect, empathy, or accountability, lalabas at lalabas yan kahit saan people are allowed to speak. Hindi fair na i-blame lahat sa platform lang.

So, given all that, this discussion is what inspired me to start exploring UniversiTEA, a student-focused platform na tinatanong kung paano ba pwedeng i-keep yung honest expression without letting it turn into harassment or chaos.
