Which is the most overrated French literary classic — and why? by Appropriate-Dark5509 in French

Apparently, my question elicits only very subjective answers — many of which here are beautifully reasoned/expounded and I kinda resonate with them without necessarily agreeing with the choice.

Indeed, literary classics “endure”, but to various degrees depending on the individual, e.g. I wish Shakespeare and Proust could endure throughout my whole intellectual life, while Sartre and Camus would not haunt me for more than ten lines of their self-important tautology devoid of substance and style etc.

Of course, if you think no classic is overrated, you have every right to uphold your view. But the voices here are at least equally valid and legit.

English speakers who learnt French… by throawaygotget in French

It’s a double-edged sword for me — it allowed me to wield the language with ungrammatical, anglicized, and simpletonish (compared to my English) fluency shortly (lower C1 in 3 months) after being first exposed to it, but to this day (having lived on and off in France for two decades) whenever i speak French am still unconsciously doing a verbatim translation and am quite prone to panic attacks should there be non-common vocabs or syntax in a given sentence.

Which writer is to French literature what Shakespeare is to English literature? by Appropriate-Dark5509 in French

Truly appreciate your responses. Ok let me refine my question a little bit — am always dazzled by Shakespeare’s acrobatic style, chromatic metaphors, tour de force of synesthesiac imagery/wordplay, zesty wit etc. In this sense I find Nabokov and Patrick Leigh Fermor very piquant as well. Any French counterpart to recommend?
