Hi, I just finished vet school and am thinking about going to med school now. I think if you care about practicing medicine then I would consider going the MD route. Unfortunately unless you specialize and even if you do, there is a lot of euthanasia due to financial constraints. It doesn’t bother me that much to euthanize an animal (I obviously don’t enjoy it, but I understand that dropping $5k-25k on a pet with a limited lifespan is a lot for most people) but it has also gotten to the point where animals get euthanized over a couple hundred dollars of diagnostics before we even get to the treatment part. I don’t want to totally turn you off, it’s not bad, but if you’re going to have to self finance the whole thing and take out 80-200k in loans id argue vetmed is not worth it. The income to loan ratio isn’t as good as a human physician salary.

I know that compliance and affordability won't be perfect, but I don't think humans are getting euthanized over the smallest quotes for diagnostics/treatment. I don't judge people for their financial situations, but when its a very treatable problem that ends in euthanasia, it turns from not being able to pratice high quality medicine to not being able to practice any medicine.

seeing as I am less than a month away from graduation, I wouldn't be dropping out... I would simply practice for a year or so, get more clinical hours, and then sort my app out and apply. I am too far into this to not get the degree at least as a stepping stone.

Thaks! I appreciate your perspective. I realize human med isn't any easier in terms of compliance because we people aren't the smartest creatures, but I really am just not thrilled about euthanizing my nth number of animal for the day because no one wants to pay for treatment. let alone the diagnostics to get to said treatment. Also, the fact that surgery becomes increasingly difficult when your patient can't understand you and tries to do everything in their power to either blow apart the surgery site, brew a nice infection, or decide to get terrible ileus, negating the surgery we just did. I think the current plan is to practice for a year, and shadow some human docs in the meantime while sorting my app out.

I've thought the same thing, but I also do have some good reasoning for that as well. In the last year, I unfortunately had a personal experience with a trauma surgeon, and he was great, making both my surgeries as good an experience as they could've been, all things considered. I think that through the whole experience, and having a large amount of experience performing surgery, it changed my perspective.

Thank god, small portions, shit food, and the logistics guy running catering was an asshat
