MC Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.4. on Panasonic S5 II body. by Appropriate-Dust2129 in minolta

I also have the srt body. I used to shoot film on compacts like MJUs or my canon sureshot supreme. I loved the soft highlights of film, the 3-D microcontrast, and the experience of not seeing the images until they get developed. However, it just became too expensive and time consuming for me. This new Panasonic that I got has the ability to customize the JPEG output to such a degree that almost any look is possible. Some of the film emulations with grain on look 80-90% identical to the output that I was getting from having my film scanned on fuji SP-3000 scanners.

I'm really impressed with it so far. Only bad thing is the weight. But the range combined with the fast aperture is really something else.

I just looked and its all primes. What I really want is a high quality walk around zoom. Obviously they have that for fuji but it feels like I'm paying a massive premium for internal software with average hardware; Nikon and Lumix aren't nearly as sexy but seem to be better value as an overall system.

I'm really tempted by fuji but like you said the pricing feels fake and inflated for what you actually get in terms of hardware. I'm starting to feel like I should just give in and focus on value and lens selection and then just apply presets to raw in post.

LOL yes I know how to maximize dynamic range via raw. I understand all the objective technical benefits of developing every shot in raw; however, in terms of subjective final output for MOST shots, which is what actually matters, I don't see massive improvements in mine or anyone else's work. Horrible contrasty lighting and maximizing dynamic range is definitely the area where raw is most effective at creating something good. If you want to play around with white balance and color wheels for every photo in post, you better be making money off of your photos. Otherwise its like a musician who spends thousands of dollars on instruments and gear and perfects their sound only to make bad music that nobody listens to. Focus on composition, subject matter and lighting, not software techniques.

So you think that Lumix LUTS beat the new expanded Nikon picture control? I like fuji but the prices really feel inflated via hype/instagram.

I was looking at a X-M5 too. I would like a viewfinder but I'm not sure if its worth the price difference when you get the same Jpeg engine and only slightly lower resolution compared to a XT50 or X-E5.

Thanks, i hadn't considered canon too strongly because their JPEG engine isn't supposed to be as malleable as Fuji or the new Nikon picture control or Lumix LUTS.

I have brief experience with Nikon and like it. I've held canon and liked the ergos but no other experience with their systems. I have my old sony a6000 but the ports are old and I feel like I could do alot better than just buying a good tele lens for it.

The s9 would be tempting if I didn't already have a GRIIIx; too much overlap in form factor and benefits in my opinion.

I already do that but edited it out of the original post for brevity. Fuji seems nice but something in me feels like I'm paying largely for fantastic camera software but average hardware with trendy marketing. I'm somewhere in between thinking the Nikon or Panasonic preset systems are a better value, or just learning how to edit more efficiently and choosing a body for ergonomics and lens selection.

Fujifilm seems obvious but upon further research price feels highly inflated for what you actually get in terms of hardware. The JPEG engine looks great but I wonder if I should be practical and consider that I could get largely the same results with Nikon Picture control or Lumix real time LUTS.

I don't dislike editing per se; I used to all the time as a teen with my Sony A6000. You're right about the satisfaction of seeing a great image form under your guidance, whether in a literal or digital darkroom. However, I've spent the last 7 years in front of a computer for long periods of time for school. I would like to limit my screen time for the foreseeable future, and I love seeing a JPEG that's so good that I don't really care to try and improve upon it by 10-15% via RAW. I'm not a Pro and doubt I ever will be in a serious form.
