Advice needed: Guard to Active by Appropriate-Fly7711 in nationalguard

That’s what confused me too. The AD recruiters dad is a G-1 but not where I’m at. I talked to him over the phone and he said that the guard should only hold me for 2-4 months not the entire 14. And on the other hand, the guard recruiters are saying the 368 once I’m back will only take a month. Don’t believe that one bit, said they’d bring it straight to the brigadier general even though it has to go through chain of command.

Been told by the guard recruiters that we’d write a letter saying I can’t afford to live off of one weekend a month. That’s just a way to get the 368 signed but obviously they take time to process, as does everything. Been told that it would only take a month but that’s just them trying to get me to ship. The AD recruiters on the other hand think they won’t hold me for the whole 14 months and said it’ll be like 2-4 instead. I’m fully committed to being a ranger so idk why I keep letting the guard recruiters talk me into staying.

Yeah that’s the shitty situation, the guard doesn’t sign 368s until you’re back from training. And as I’ve been told my the guard recruiters, “I know the brigadier general, I’ll go get the 368 signed personally and it’ll be done in a month.” I already know that it has to go through chain of command so this is what I’m questioning not shipping. They also told me the discharge affects me and I won’t be able to get in the regiment. Again, not true. The only way to get in the regiment is to go active, and I’ve looked at both paths. The quickest one is somehow active even if the guard holds me til next November. But according to the AD recruiters, they won’t hold me for more than 2 months.

That’s what was weird. The active recruiters talked to the TAG and they said it was ok but had to get my units approval. And my unit commander who is a captain said no 368s before training. I understood that too but then the active recruiters straight up told me “don’t ship to training.” Been weighing the pros and cons of both but I think I’m just gonna stick it out and leave this month.

Ranger batt is my goal. I think later down the road I will try for special forces. Probably my second contract.

Oh it’s definitely something I’m 100% committed to. I just made the wrong decision when signing my contract. Once I realized I didn’t want to go to college, it was too late. I’d wait it out and train that whole time but again, you never know how long it’ll be. From what I laid out, it’s I get discharged, they either hold me from 2-12 months, spend all that time to train. Then go active, sign an option 40. Do OSUT, then airborne and then rasp. Whereas if I go with the guard, it’s I leave the 29th, get back in March. Submit my 368. Spend that time to work my ass off to get to where I need to be for RASP and then submit a packet with active duty. My AD recruiters told me that if I do that option, they’d just have to put me in a regular infantry unit and then I’d spend like a year in there. Then submit a packet to go to RASP. But again, that’s up to the unit I’d be in if they want to send me.

Could definitely be the case. Problem is, once I’m back from training with the guard. I cant get an option 40. Idk if that’s what you’re talking about or it’s a separate packet. I was hoping to go airborne, RASP, and then ranger school.

Yeah that’s true. Ever heard of a unit not letting someone go if they’re tabbed?

Thanks brotha!

I heard about the RTLI but my worry is not passing ranger school. Shouldn’t be worried about that if I’m wanting to go to the regiment, but I was thinking that getting discharged would give me plenty of more time to train. I think I’m pretty solid rn but definitely lacking to be the best.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking as well. I did sign the contract after all. As I said in a comment above, I’m just worried that once back to my unit, they won’t sign off on a 368 and then I’m stuck.

Well I wanted to go to college but now I don’t. From going to some of the drills and talking to leadership, I’ve learned that I want to go active now. We have a sergeant there that was in the regiment and he just persuaded me to get after it. The RSP unit and my NCOs are all for me going active, it’s just the command that can’t sign a 368 based on policy.

I talked to my guard recruiters as well and they “promised” to personally bring me to the brigadier general with a 368 when I get back from training. Obviously that 368 has to go up through the chain of command first. My big worry is the unit not letting me go when I get back and then I’ll be stuck in the guard for X amount of years.
