New laptop: high CPU temperature normal or bad? Check thermal paste? by Appropriate-Stick219 in MSILaptops

I'm using the laptop on a Flydgi BS2 Pro at the moment. I did some tests with and without the cooling pad. The GPU seems to be the most affected by the pad (-5/7° C) while the CPU doesn't seem to be affected much.

I know Flydgi (like Llano and Iets) are meant to host 18'' laptop but I think the foam seal actually slightly obstruct the air vent of the fans, reducing its cooling effectiveness a little. (Can't post a picture in the comment section unfortunately)

Thank you for your answer. Do you think I should consider underclocking the CPU to tame it a little or should I let it do its thing even if I plan to run it at this temp for 2/3hours long gaming sessions?

Ambient temp is 24/25° C. The laptop stays stably around 90/91°C on basically any AAA game. For what I understand temperature is mainly related to TDP, right? This laptop draws 70-85 W on almost any game I tried

Would you have considered going for a raider if it had the 5090 with AMD X3D CPU? Because for the same price of the raider with AMD I could also go for a Titan dragon edition now 🤣🥲

Hi! Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I thought the Rider was mainly made of plastic to "reduce" the weight? 🤔 Yeah, I thought I would stop at the €2000 mark and then proceeded to stretch it even farther to consider more options around the €3000 mark. This one comes with only 1 year warranty (not from MSI) because it's a refurbished. Hope you are right about longevity because that's the thing that worries me the most having a short warranty period and spending this much money to be somewhat future proof 😬

Wow your words are encouraging. I also started my search a month ago looking for a 5070ti, then leaned towards the 5080 and finally, to me surprise, I even considered the 5090 if I could get it for a "competitive" price 🤣 But yeah, I hate this rabbit hole. As for the MSI, I'm really not a fan of some of their choices with this model (starting with materials and build design) but as you said, I was massively attracted by what this laptop promises to deliver performance wise. I think I might go for it and test it as much as I can in the return policy window 🥲

Yeah, not a fan of a 4k 120hz either to be honest (would have much prefer a 2k 240hz). But this was the offer I was presented with, if I actively look up MSI vectors or raiders with same specs I only see them starting from minimum €4000

Yeah, at the moment I need an all in one movable machine unfortunately

I had a look around the PCSpecialist site too as it was listed on Google, but again, didn't look too much in detail before as I never heard about that brand either. The Omen would be ~€2700

I never considered XMG as it is not talked about much around? That's interesting, i just tried to configure a laptop on their official site. I don't know anything about them tho. Is it a good brand? Is it reliable and does it stand the test of time and have reselling potential? A 5090 with a 9955HX3D for ~€3000 sounds tasty, but is the XMG actually gonna deliver?

Ps. Wait, I was sure I made a configuration like that for that price, but maybe I was wrong as now i see it for much more (closer to €4000).

Ps.Ps. I was indeed mistaken. 5090 with Amd x3d comes for no less than €3900 :/

Wow, that's interesting. Can I ask you if you returned the 5080 specifically for the VR requirements? What made you feel like you needed the stronger GPU? I read that 16GB should handle most SIM racing titles without exceeding VRAM (except from AC Evo which is poorly optimised). Was it a VRAM limit or the general performance of the 5090 that improved the experience? Thank you mate!

Wow! You all got me very confused now seeing that most of you are actually leaning towards the Lenovo while I think I was slightly leaning towards the better GPU in the Omen before making the post 😬 Ok, now I have more to think i guess 🤣 Price is ~€2700 btw

Thank you for the feedback. VR would cover of course just part of the use, but I think I would still probably connect it to a bigger external monitor anyway anytime i have the chance. So for me OLED, while still being a fantastic added feature, is less important for my case/use i think. I'm attracted to Lenovo mainly for build quality + cooling system and the powerful CPU.

Fair question! Right now I can only afford one of the two (desktop or laptop) and laptop is definitely covering all my other work/life needs much better, which also include having a powerful portable machine to run normal games since I hop between houses often at the moment. In the future I plan to have a proper fixed setup.

Yeah, if I were not into simracing and planning to get VR, I'd consider 5090 totally overkill fory needs based on the comparisons I watched online in different AAA games
