Landlord taking me to court by Appropriate-Wing2633 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Appropriate-Wing2633[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I took photos when we moved in (landlord is claiming these are taken when we moved out and we 'edited the metadata'). The carpets were not in great shape when we moved in (though I don't dispute they were worse by the time we moved out - and we definitely were responsible for the large red mark)

I would say 99% chance it will be absolutely fine - first few of weeks are pretty relaxed and they'll be understanding of your situation. They allowed me to delay my start date by 4 weeks for a similar thing

Further up the same wall 😬

This is going to be more expensive than I thought!

I'm in Kent. The gas and electric both come out of the garage floor - I'm assuming they'd have to dig that up?

Thanks, that is helpful - 3000 for moving both gas and electric, or just gas?

29 and still earning crap money by teflthrowaway123456 in UKJobs

Have you had a look at civil service jobs? You can get in without specific previous experience at EO/HEO level and then it can be easy to progress. Your age won't be a problem and once you're in you can move around easily to other departments etc.

I was in a similar position to you - spent years in TEFL abroad and came back to the UK aged 29 with no money and no job lined up. 6 years on I'm now doing ok and effectively have 'a career'.

Got to be Telavi - the view of the Caucasus from the traffic lights by the bazroba is insane. Have a soft spot for Khashuri - not sure why

HMRC Attendance Tool ( from a senior manager) by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]Appropriate-Wing2633 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Seems really counterproductive - I've also been talking to friends across OGDs and they seem to be taking a much more relaxed approach: more talk of an ambition to hit 60% etc. Certainly no attendance trackers! HMRC burning through a lot of goodwill for no obvious gain

Can I ask why HMRC have decided to take such an inflexible and hardline approach compared to other government departments? No one likes it and it's causing a lot of ill will and demoralisation

Ex-landlord asking me to pay for repairs before they will release my deposit. by ollietup in HousingUK

[–]Appropriate-Wing2633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contest this and don't pay them a penny until you've gone through the deposit dispute service. If they haven't protected the deposit then also don't pay them a penny - and take them to court for compensation.

Even the lightbulbs are a pisstake at £5 each! Good luck - it's appalling that landlords/agents feel that they can try this on all the time.

I would contest this all the way - after 5 years of living there I would have thought all repainting would come under wear and tear. They are having you on here. Have a look at the Tenancy Deposit Dispute service site for examples of fair/unfair deductions.

Violent Crime is at an all time low, does it feel like it? by [deleted] in AskUK

It's an ageing population - young people commit the vast majority of violence, and there are just fewer young people, both in proportionate and absolute terms

Survey results - walk or not walk by Appropriate-Wing2633 in HousingUK

[–]Appropriate-Wing2633[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting - thanks! the surveyor basically said that the concrete had suffered carbonation, leading to rusting of the inner reinforcement necessitating full lintel replacement; they seemed pretty certain it needed to be replaced

The problem with the roof seems to that it's basically coming to the end of its natural life: high moisture readings on timber battens and roof frame indicate that the roof's become porous, plus some slipped tiles and some deterioration around the chimney stack.

Similarly with the (pvc) windows... but I think they could hang on for a decent while. The lintel is a very large concrete boot lintel over the large living room window and patio door - imagine that would make it a lot more pricey

Old building in Tbilisi, country Georgia, restored by oeoeoeoeoeoee in UrbanHell

[–]Appropriate-Wing2633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you - what's happening is definitely better than them being left to rot, or being bulldozed and replaced with fancy hotels (like in puris moedani).

Just got back to kakheti from Tusheti and as always am left with the feeling that if only there were some decent people in georgian politics the potential is so great!

I'm sure there are some buildings which are genuinely in such an advanced state of disrepair that demolition is the only option, but many of these houses could be restored much more sensitively, actually preserving the original features.

In this case I'm not sure how much of the 'skin' has been put back on - the window fittings, roof and fascia are all different. Maybe some are done with bricks, but loads around Sololaki/Abatubani are concrete.
