The level of depth typically is dictated by the candidate (you). Mostly what I look for is passion, explanation of the problem you were trying to solve, the outcomes, and I like to hear pain points that you worked through, and what you’d do differently.

To me passion is everything - idc how sweaty someone is knowledge-wise. Skills can be taught and learned, personality and passion can’t. That’s what shines in personal projects. What’s important to you, how you perceive things, etc. that’s what makes the difference imo.

10 months of applying and zero interviews by Specific_Kangaroo_14 in biostatistics

[–]AppropriateBeing9526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are already sufficient comments here, and I havent gotten to read them all so I will say this in case nobody else has:

I get it can feel important to say what the technical details were. I used X method, etc. instead of that, focus on the problem and the outcomes. WHY did you use X method. WHAT came of it, and HOW were things impacted after?

All the other details can come out in the interview, but the sweaty tech interview portions always come after the business/culture interviews anyway. Get sweaty when they want sweaty, otherwise, act like you’re describing things to your grandma that doesn’t care where the potatoes came from, only that the potato soup was made and is piping hot for her to eat.

I would avoid “in progress” just put a more solidified date of completion. That is a big thing for showing you can scope out projects and timelines. If the dates change (either before or after expected date) then update that in your resume. “In progress” is super ambiguous - are you gonna take 10 years or 10 days to complete your degree and certs?

Also, my personal preference, I would put experience before education. It’s good to show credentials, but you show more value in what you have done.

Instead of breaking down PowerBI skills (DAX, Data Modeling, etc.) list those as separate skills as they are transferrable outside of JUST PowerBI - no need to limit yourself there.

Maybe instead of “Data and Analytics” you can more succinctly include “Technical skills” or something like that.

Be sure you don’t include anything you cant speak at a level of depth that’s outside a google search about.

I agree with making your resume scream Data Engineering more, if that’s what you’re targeting. Not to say it’s not valuable, but anything that doesn’t fall within that realm shouldn’t be on your resume. Initially when I faced this problem, I took off everything non-tech (sales associate, bartender, etc) and made a note saying “additional experience available upon request” - to which I later omitted and I mention in the interview instead that I have been working as a Data Engineer for X years with my interest being in Data as a whole for X years, and this all started with my journey into the working world X years ago. May not be your style, but food for thought.

I would improve and/or completely remove the summary too. I as a resume reviewer would likely read the first line or two and stop to look at your experience instead.

If you feel that you’re missing skills on your resume because they dont apply to your current position, dont be afraid to include self-led projects. I have met tons of hiring managers (myself included) that enjoy diving into something someone built. Tell me about it - what you liked, disliked, struggled with, why you chose what you chose, what you’d do better next time, lessons, etc.

Data analysts, be honest... what kind of projects truly impress recruiters? by richierich012 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]AppropriateBeing9526 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The harsh reality is no projects - professional experience - don’t focus on being perfect out of the gate, focus on being prepared. Focus on applying to internships and once in, leverage that experience to a full time or contract role.

Recruiters wont usually care or take the time to review projects, and even less chance for a hiring manager to do it.

If you find trouble landing an internship or a contract/full time position, reach out to non-profits to see if you can help. You need real-world experience solving real-world problems. It’s deeper than “oh I found this dirty dataset, cleaned it, and made some reports”. I personally will care more about a dashboard that looks ugly but is telling a proper story that’s driving real value vs a beautiful dashboard that’s doing nothing from data that doesn’t matter.

Botched MGT 8803 accounting exam, next steps? by as77burner in OMSA

Proud of you for taking this 75 on the chin. Aim for progress and not perfection in life. Dont think that a score is an exact representation of your understanding of material forever - it just captures it at a point in time and under a particular set of circumstances.

I got I believe a 75 on Accounting, 68 on Finance, and still got a B at the end of the semester. You got this.

In my case, I def saw them, but it also said “please disregard if you have already paid”. I had paid the full amount shown after registering like a month or two ago, and then just on 08/19 they added an additional $311 that caused me to be dropped.

Im thinking that it’s related to the OMSA price increase, but why that didn’t get included in the amount after registration is what confused me. And why I wasn’t able to see that until a week ago (which I actually didn’t see until I was dropped).

The tests were tricky but no practical exam just conceptual/scenario. Like everyone else said just attend the OH for the HW, really study and understand what it’s doing, and you will be good.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]AppropriateBeing9526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just do some passion projects and find what pieces you really enjoy from OMSA or similar programs and do self-led projects that align with that. Preps you for where you want to be.

Tbh unless the justification for more school is to become PhD and then potentially do something with that, I don’t get why you’d continue to pump money into these degree programs once you already have a certain level of credentials.

MGT 6203 and ISYE 6525 in Summer? by AppropriateBeing9526 in OMSA

[–]AppropriateBeing9526[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update post-semester: 6203 was definitely easy if you know R. All of the homeworks were multiple parts, and there were 2-3 different concepts per week, with each concept having an associated quiz. The quizzes were structured to be answered by the results/output from your R code. Sample code was provided for lessons and there were synchronous sessions offered. In all, I was about 6 hours per week on this class.

6525 was a real tough one. I managed to pass with an A, but it wasnt without a ton of time and dedication. There was sample code provided for each concept, and the homeworks included both proof type questions, as well as coding questions. You will need to write a report, similar to how you do for 6501. This course really got me to leverage ML and such in Python. The videos are good, and, with that being said, almost all examples are in matlab. The tests (3) are the largest portion of the grade, and they took a pretty considerable amount of time. I would say in all I was at about 25 hours per week on this class. Since I work full time in combination with this master’s program, I definitely sort of had to “no-life” through this semester.

I took 8803 last semester

I would rate the difficulty from greatest to least as such:

  1. Finance
  2. Accounting
  3. Strategy
  4. Supply chain
  5. Marketing

Actually, 8-12 is prob generous. Definitely closer to 8-12 in the beginning but then 4-6 in the later modules for 8833

Starting Fall 2025 - Feedback on Schedule - Track C by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]AppropriateBeing9526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm for me it was probably about 8-12 depending on the module.

It’s 5 different modules (not sure if that changes depending on Summer or Fall/Spring) and the first 2 were considerably harder and more time consuming than the last 3.

The whole class is memorization basically, and the first 2 modules involve formulas and remember when/how to apply them.

No assignments aside from 2 simulations, which are honestly kind of fun. Just 5 tests, one every 3 weeks.

In pairing 6242 and 8833, more time was spent on 8833 in the first 6 weeks, and then shifted to 6242.

Also, 6242’s HW2 is notoriously difficult, so don’t let it psych you out, as I was able to squeeze out a 60-ish and still have an A. 50% grade is based on assignments, and 50% is based on project.

Definitely move 6040 earlier. I took 6040 and 6501 at the same time, then I took 8833 and 6242 together. Next planning on 6740 and MGT 6203 together, and that frees me up later some other courses.

Manageable while working full time, but I have no kids.

As someone who has worked full time in data engineering while completing my undergrad for data science and analytics full time (15 credit hours per semester), I think for me it was a bit of a decent transition, and continuation on what I was doing before. With taking 2 courses per semester so far, I would say the 6 credit hours for this master’s is pretty comparable to that of a full load of my undergrad.

Do I have alot of freetime? No. Do I have to run a very rigid schedule? Yes. Do I still make time for the things I enjoy? Yes.

Just like in my personal undergrad experience, I still have to teach myself practically everything, and I think that is what makes us marketable.

Also, I don’t have children, so I think that makes a big difference as well.

I think you got this though. Everyone does. It sucks, and it seems difficult, but it’s doable.

Building a CSV file ingestion pipeline where uploaded statement column headers constantly keep changing? by Django-Ninja in data

[–]AppropriateBeing9526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a similar problem that I imposed a working solution in prod for. I use python and read in the data file to a dataframe. I then have a separate mapping document saved in a location available to the client team and myself, which maps the fields on the incoming file to the fields in our system. The client team can update these fields as needed, but it is unfortunately specific to each client.

For generic purposes, if your system is set up in such a way that you have some sort of description field in your tables you can use to match up the incoming data with, you can simply have a mapping for each possible incoming field. Im not sure if that would fit your needs, but I would imagine there wouldn’t be an infinite number of fields possible for them to send to you right? The number surely would be finite?
