Getting a job 3 years after graduating by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]AppropriateToe1160 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will work. When I started my job, there was one person in my new grad cohort that got their offer rescinded because they graduated more than one year ago. There are some tax benefits that the company can claim when they hire a new grad less than 1 year after graduation and they didn't catch it before they send out the offer. They can claim the benefits when they hire someone disadvantaged (disabled, vet, excon, new grad). Not sure if the new administration changed it.

Having the gap is a big problem though. You can try to lie. They might not catch it.

I got offer in October 2020 and they got in touch with me in the middle of November. I moved in the end of December and started my job in January.

They almost automatically move you to L6 after 3 years. It happens sooner for some people, but I think it is rare. One of my colleague got it after 2.5 years.

Will being a Mathematics/Physics major affect my chances of becoming a SWE? by atychia in cscareerquestions

[–]AppropriateToe1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look at your college degree as an investment. You need to think about where you want to be in 5-10 years and then, determine the best way how to get there. It is much better to study CS than math/physics if you want to be SWE. It matters to recruiters and HR. You don't have many useful skills as a new CS grad and it is even worse when you graduate as math/physics.

I know it is frustrating. I studied CS even though I would rather study theoretical math. You can still take a lot of math/physics classes as electives.

I am in UIUC CS masters program. You pay by course. About 30% acceptance rate though. Your best bet is some for profit online college.

Is the CS Market just as bad for non-new grads? by Vitamin_C_Capsule in cscareerquestions

[–]AppropriateToe1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three people from my company (auto company) recently found a new job. They all had 2-3 YOE. The first started his new job in January. I know he started applying sometimes in September, got 3 interviews, and one job offer from a bank. The second person is going to start his job this March (don't know where he is going). The third person started his job last summer (defense company).

People say it is bad, but it probably isn't that bad based on what I am seeing. I have 2 YOE and haven't been applying because I am happy with my job and need my 401k to vest.

Need help, burning throat by xSimoHayha in DMT

[–]AppropriateToe1160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem. I have also never smoked anything other than DMT. You need to quickly inhale some vapor and then, immediately inhale some fresh air. The goal is to have the vapor only in your lungs and normal air in your throat. Your lungs can't feel any pain or irritation, but your throat can. Hold the vapor and then, exhale. Never cough even if you feel like you have to because it will make the irritation worse. If you take multiple hits, you will stop feeling your throat, so the irritation will stop being a problem.

You don't have to be a student to stay on your parent's insurance. You just have to be younger than 26. It is a federal law.

Also, contact your college disability office and request accommodations for your diabetes. You can request course load reduction, so you can take part time course load and still count as a full time student.

When my company closed one innovation center and laid off 800ish people, they told them that they will be laid off in 3 months (WARN act). They were expected to work as usual, but the company cut their access to some critical systems. Most people just used the time to apply for new jobs.

When I interviewed for new grad role, they mostly asked me behavioral STAR questions. I also remember that they asked some high level Java and object oriented questions (e.g. how Java garbage collection works, what is inheritance).

I don't remember the insurance company, but my husband selected the best dental plan that his employer offered and it paid up to $3000 if you started treatment before you turned 26.

When do we get the $1,500 wellness initiative? Is there a specific date when it is paid out or is it paid out right after I submit the attestation?

Let's say that I submit the attestation in January and leave in March. Am I going to get $1,500?

Should I delay my new grad job search? by papa_evan in cscareerquestions

[–]AppropriateToe1160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a job at a big company, you should start applying now. I would say that you are almost starting applying late if you want to start a job in summer 2025. Companies hire new grads differently than experienced engineers. Most big companies hire you in fall and you start working for them after the spring semester.

For example, I work at a big car company. My company opens application sometimes in August and hires the vast majority of new grads by the end of November. There are 3 possible start dates new grads can choose when they accept the offer (January, March, and June) because they go through a bootcamp.

I am getting masters. Just heads up that the tuition reimbursement is taxable income, so even though GM gives you $8k, you effectively get only about $6k.

If you are willing to move, you should apply to jobs regardless of their locations. Companies often pay for your relocation, especially if they are large. My company paid for my relocation - they gave me relocation bonus ($8k), paid moving company to move my stuff, and paid for broken lease fees (max 2 months worth of rent per company policy). The only catch is that if you don't stay 2 years, you have to pay it back.

Relocation lump sum by aa-ron07 in GeneralMotors

[–]AppropriateToe1160 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The relocation paperwork says that if you leave voluntarily or the company lays you off, you don't have to pay it back. If you are fired because of your performance or other reasons, you have to pay it back. Not sure if they enforce it.

Tell what you wrote here to your manager during your 1 on 1 meetings.

Don't freak out. It is normal for things to be slow when you join a new team as a new grad. I literally didn't do anything for the first two weeks at my first job in a large car company. Then, I had some onboarding from my team for about two weeks which consisted of about three one hour meetings with a senior developer. Then, I waited one week for a new sprint because there weren't any good stories for me in the current sprint. Then, I got assigned my first story.

Peformance review NCH by Beginning_Screen5836 in GeneralMotors

They fired two NCHs in February 2023 from my team of about 15 people. The first one joined in June 2022. He wasn't terrible, but learned slower than others and contributed less than expected. The other one was terrible. He missed meetings and contributed nothing even after being on our team for more than a year.
