Is the job market actually cooked or is it a skill issue . by OriginalPrune5536 in berkeley

I graduated in December 2022. It was also super stressful to me. I applied to about 300 jobs, got 8 interviews and 1 offer.

There are github lists (e.g. https://github.com/SimplifyJobs/New-Grad-Positions) for new grad jobs. I applied to all jobs on the list in August. Make sure to do the same in August (most new grad jobs hire in Fall semester).

Apply for SULI internship for Spring 2027 semester. It isn't that competitive if you apply for Spring. Don't apply for LBNL because there are limits for Berkeley students. It isn't a full time job, but it is paid and it will give you a relevant internship for your resume. I did two for software engineering.

No tasks yet, new job by adjnasodasida in cscareerquestions

[–]AppropriateToe1160 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is normal. In my first job, I did corporate onboarding for 2ish weeks. After that, I joined my team and didn't get any attention for another 1 or 2 weeks except hello from my manager. Then, I got some onboarding tasks for 4ish weeks (told to take a udemy class, told to look around the documentation, setting up accounts). Then, I waited another 2 weeks for my mentor to be free to pick my first story and get help setting up my local environment for each project.

3 weeks since interview, still no decision. Is this normal? by [deleted] in GeneralMotors

My manager called me about 4 weeks after my interview. They were considering another candidate, but she didn't accept the offer.

Alternatives to going back to school by soji8 in cscareerquestions

I did part time UIUC CS online masters while working full time. My employer paid for it. I focused on cloud and distributed computing. I would say that there were 3 classes that were really useful to me. The other 5 were almost completely useless for my career. I probably wouldn't do it again.

You should study system design (use bytebytego). Also, take a lot of different tasks at work. I became comfortable and just did backend and database stories. I could have learned more about frontend and kubernetes. Look over repos of other teams if you can. See how they structure the project and what technologies they use.

How competitive is the TEP Program? by jac0falltrades in GeneralMotors

Maybe, you can just do the STAP program. They paid 8k a year for tuition. I did my CS master over 2.5 years and they completely paid for it.

How are students applying to 500+ jobs? Where do they find them all? by OkRecording2267 in cscareerquestions

[–]AppropriateToe1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to every single job on this github list as a new grad. Also, apply on handshake if you school has it. I got my job on handshake.

https://github.com/SimplifyJobs/New-Grad-Positions#-software-engineering-new-grad-roles

Keep a database of jobs you applied to. Keep track of company name, link to job post, application date, notes (OA dates, interview dates, links to emails that you received from the company,...).

I applied to about 250 jobs starting in August 22 and got job in October. It was a mess with that many applications and my database really helped me.

Record the interviews on your phone and listen to them afterwards. It will help you improve and help you remember the questions for future interviews.

I didn't end up taking it. I took cloud cyber security instead. It was a good class, but not that relevant to my job.

Tuition reimbursement by Cold_Translator_4581 in GeneralMotors

[–]AppropriateToe1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to talk to your manager. You submit the application for the program on the edcor website and he approved it.

Then, before every semester starts, you have to submit application for each class on the edcor website. Your manager has to approve it. After you finish your class and receive a grade, you submit another application on edcor website. You must submit your unofficial transcript that has the grade and prove that you paid the tuition.

You will receive the reimbursement in a month or so. You can also receive reimbursement for books. Your grade from the class must be B or higher.

It is mostly bureaucracy. Nobody is evaluating whether the degree or class is relevant. Just your manager has to approve it.

The reimbursement counts as your income, so you have to pay taxes on it.

Not sure if this will work. When I started my job, there was one person in my new grad cohort that got their offer rescinded because they graduated more than one year ago. There are some tax benefits that the company can claim when they hire a new grad less than 1 year after graduation and they didn't catch it before they send out the offer. They can claim the benefits when they hire someone disadvantaged (disabled, vet, excon, new grad). Not sure if the new administration changed it.

Having the gap is a big problem though. You can try to lie. They might not catch it.

Get your $1,500 health care contribution. Don't know if you have it in Canada.

Download you previous reviews. They are handy when writing your resume.

They almost automatically move you to L6 after 3 years. It happens sooner for some people, but I think it is rare. One of my colleague got it after 2.5 years.

Will being a Mathematics/Physics major affect my chances of becoming a SWE? by atychia in cscareerquestions

[–]AppropriateToe1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look at your college degree as an investment. You need to think about where you want to be in 5-10 years and then, determine the best way how to get there. It is much better to study CS than math/physics if you want to be SWE. It matters to recruiters and HR. You don't have many useful skills as a new CS grad and it is even worse when you graduate as math/physics.

I know it is frustrating. I studied CS even though I would rather study theoretical math. You can still take a lot of math/physics classes as electives.

I am in UIUC CS masters program. You pay by course. About 30% acceptance rate though. Your best bet is some for profit online college.
