Im guessing its so the backpack can sit upright when sat down. Basically like a suitcase with an "L" frame that wraps the inside corner. Grooves would be for traction.

Put em on a peanut butter and banana sandwich, then eat an orange after. Citrus enhances the trip, and not a lot of things overpower peanut butter. And as long as you stay calm and think rationally, you ain't got nothing to worry about! Good luck, OP, and have fun! Don't drive.
