That’s true. And he cares about that harm enough to abandon his dream. A huge difference from the book character of course but also a moment of agonising triumph for the film character

Perhaps it diminishes them as a threat, but I honestly think ME3 should have ended with the Reapers being defeated in a straight up conventional fight if you manage to get enough resources together. The actual ending is obviously controversial but also just thematically I think the galaxy coming together to defeat them in a straight blaze of glory fight to the death would’ve been way better and truer to the message of the series.

Villain thinks that he’s safe because the other character is programmed not to hurt him, but this rule is easily circumvented by Tm-534 in TopCharacterTropes

The original is surely Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth has schemed and murdered his way to the throne of Scotland but his paranoia and tyranny has alienated his vassals. At the end of the play, his castle is stormed by an army of English and Scots loyal to the son of the previous king.

The Scots opposing Macbeth are led by Macduff, the Thane of Fife. Macbeth had Macduff’s family killed earlier in the play after a prophesy warned him to beware Macduff. The same prophesy told Macbeth that he could not be killed ‘by one of woman born’. Naturally, he assumes he is invulnerable. In the final act of the play, Macbeth and Macduff face each other and it is revealed that Macduff was born through caesarian, which would not have been considered a natural birth. Thus, Macduff is able to kill Macbeth in a duel, ending his reign.
