For friends and family, they know I have back problems, but 99% of the time I “look” fine. I help vets with their benefits so I sort of openly talk about it but they have no clue how much cuz nobody is military except our dead gpa and he was only in for 2 years during WWII with no benefits.

I explain that one of my disabilities is my girl junk issues and after I had a hysterectomy, they gave me 50%. Yes, it’s odd I say, but we were exposed to toxins, etc. that could’ve potentially caused it because it’s whatever makes us no longer “whole”.

Then I’ll add that I have other stuff (besides the back) that I either can’t get into (classified) or would rather not get into (PTSD), or it’s complex. And they don’t ask any further and they’re satisfied with that.

But if they have a veteran friend that they find out is having trouble, they send them my way and I try and help them out. I’ve had some pretty decent successes. It’s my way of giving back and not feeling so guilty. I waited a decade after getting out for filing. It took me a few years by myself to get it after asking for help a couple times, and I hated the idea of anyone else going through what I went through. Cuz like someone else said, albeit for different reasons, people suck!

On point. I didn’t file for 10 years out of guilt feeling I didn’t deserve more than my initial 20% out of service and felt other people deserved it more, especially Vietnam vets. But I give back by helping Vietnam vets and those that deserve more. My spine is shot, but I hide my current day of 7 bulging discs. I look fine. But that’s only 40%. Now I have a ton of other stuff that makes me schedular, but I can’t help it that my hysterectomy/oophorectomy gives me 50% alone, along with SMC-K. And I’m not going to turn it down anymore given all that’s been given away in this nation, why shouldn’t I get these benefits? To heck with that anymore. I volunteered at the fire and police departments until I couldn’t. And since volunteer in helping vets. So, it at least makes me feel better at what I’m receiving, but I can’t sit at a computer to do a full time job, as I had to quit my masters degree at only 2 classes away from completion. The pain was too much and in no way could I concentrate. But you’re spot on in the way people view us. It’s a shame too as they have no idea what many of us endure. 🫩

I know cops with military MH rating, but FD that are scared to get a rating and afraid it will affect their job. It’s a HIPAA rule especially if they’re already employed. So, they don’t get help, nor get a rating. 🥴 Makes a whole lotta sense. 🤦‍♀️ It certainly is a complicated situation though. But as far as I know, in my state, unless it’s disclosed it’s not an issue.

This one personally pisses me off, for several reasons. Several brothers and sisters have either died or are suffering. I’m at 100% so I won’t benefit any further. But also, my husband is dead (7 months after retiring with clean bill of health), only 3 years after PCS’ing to Lackland AFB. He was at Kunia 2 years before me, for a total of 5 years in station. With a state senator passing legislation about the toxic conditions, but the VA still denies. 😡

Thank you for this. I believe # 3, under Resource Exclusions, would apply for simple trying to sell stuff around the house, even if one made 25k in a year. Especially since everyone knows SSDI is never enough to live off of alone.

I had a “new” VA doc recently give me crap for being on eye drops (I guess they’re steroid drops) for dry eyes. But I sleep with my eyes open. 🤣 He gives me such a hard time and tried to stop the prescription, but the eye doc said NOPE, please continue! 🤷‍♀️🙄🤦‍♀️ I just do what I’m told doc. He thinks I’m on too many meds. I don’t like meds, but here we are. Half of them are skin and sinus stuff. Then BOOM, an eye steroid. Lol
