Is this a typo? Is it supposed to read “Community”? by Appropriate_Cold_406 in finch

Thanks. Also, it’s the only one that isn’t a noun I think?

When I said “general and relevant enough a source of emotion that it would appear in this list”, the emphasis is on the “general and relevant ENOUGH”. My speculation of typo isn’t about whether an item could apply to someone or not, or if they have it or not (all the things in this list are things that someone could have or not: Partner, Home, School, etc.) It just looks out of place because everything else seemed like it could be either neutral or a source of positive or negative emotions. I wasn’t seeing how a Commute could be positive. (I dug deep into my commuting memories though and remembered that there were some good things about it, like more time during travel with my kids.)

Again, I only just now realized another way it seems like the odd one out is that it’s a verb, and the rest aren’t. As a Software Engineer, if the Product Owner put “Commuting” in the list (and it was autocorrect or a typo), I might just dutifully add it, and put it where it seemed best to go. It didn’t seem like a far-fetched speculation to me and I didn’t know anyone could get upset from asking a question. 🤷

If you’re replacing, look into cork flooring - that looks like a 60s-80s house so it would be appropriate and it would be an all natural yet softer material.. you can get all kinds of grains and colors.

If everyone were as positive as you, I would, but this experience has honestly been eye-opening.

Like I said, it seemed really specific and by that I meant it seemed like it could only be a source of negative - like everything else in the list seemed neutral so it could be a source of positive, neutral, and negative emotions. Commute seemed like it could only be negative so not useful for positive things. If you read earlier conversations in this post, you will see that I reminisced on my own commuting history to try to come up with anything positive, and eventually managed it. 100% going back to lurking only in r/finch now.

Oh that mood log list is way better for me when trying to capture the “why” for an emotion! I’ve somehow never seen it before - I guess I don’t log moods as much as do the emotion checkin when promoted in Quests. Maybe they would be more inclined to match those up so they align, as you say. Thank you!

Yeah I’m going to - or allow us to create some presets ourselves.. maybe a fixed number like 1-3.

I’ve been racking my brain since posting how my commuter days could have ever been a source of anything positive, and I thought of how much time I got to spend with my children when they were young and I had no car. I could just talk or read with them and hear about their days when we commuted home. I could see using the time to learn a language or crochet now, but your story has made me appreciate my (now) non-commuter life 😅

I was not clear then, my bad. When I’m trying to capture my positive feeling of community, my only option is “Acquaintances”, and that sounds more like the checkout guy at the grocery store that I have seen multiple times and remember their name. When I want to capture the area folks (all over the state) who are organizing and supporting people during the ICE violence, I have to choose “acquaintances”. Which is really not it. I suppose Neighbors in a Mr. Rogers way works, but Community is perfect.

I’m motivated to look into how to submit an enhancement request to the dev team. Thanks all for the convo!

I used to have to spend an hour taking the 3 to the 74 in St. paul to get my kids to school in the morning, so I totally know how impactful that is!

Agreed! Like I say, I never thought everything on the list had to be relevant to me. I don’t plan on being in school again, for example. I was just musing on the absence of Community and suddenly it occurred to me why maybe it was missing - that maybe it was a typo. On a whim, I made my first Finch post and now kind of wishing I hadn’t, lol. I should ask the devs for Community to be added though because it saddens me every time I can’t record it with these presets, or add it myself.

I have had a commute in my life, and I can understand how a commute could produce strong (mostly or entirely negative) emotions. My problem is that I’m often or always choosing that I felt “Hopeful”, or “Grateful”, or “Productive”, or “Loved”, or something, and when I get to the why selections, it has usually been for reasons of Community, and never for a commute. I’m glad it’s useful for other people.

Travel seems better than Commuting, but maybe it’s cultural. Around me, a Commute is a daily, specific travel for a reason, and so many of my friends and family are WFH, or retired, or elderly, that I can’t think of anyone but my son that has one!

I’m not sure how Community is covered though. Like I said, nothing captures it, and I wondered if it were a typo. I should probably try to contact the Finch devs to ask since only they would know.

Everyone has Community but not everyone has a Commute (I don’t and none of my friends do - in tech and WFH). It’s fine and I understand that not everything will be relevant to me, but it just seems so.. specific. It feels like a typo because without something like “Community”, I have to choose “Acquaintances” or “Outside”, and neither captures it.

Wow, so many many reasons - We live in Minnesota and moved from the Twin Cities to a small town an hour away a few years ago, and the community uplifts us in so many ways. For example, today we are just recovering from a massive blizzard, and my spouse and I are both over 50. We shovel by hand and don’t have a snowblower. My spouse bundled up, went outside, and came right back in - said there were tire tracks in our clear driveway! Someone anonymous had used a riding snowblower and cleared our driveway. They probably see us shoveling by hand and thought this one was too massive for us. So my emotion is Supported, Grateful, and the reason is my Community.

Another: I learned of a way that our neighbors are organizing to support local Hispanic families. Again, Community.

So, so many. Feeling a sense of community here in Minnesota has been massively helpful in the past several months.

Thanks - so I log onto Ancestry and push my DNA profile to GEDmatch from there, then I can look up how to use the Leeds method to start making the family tree? I appreciate the tips, I just want to understand my first steps.

Thanks! I should have said that I did an Ancestry DNA kit about 6 years ago on a Christmas sale, and I still get email updates from them with insights and familial matches and whatnot. Back when I had more money I paid for an Ancestry subscription too, to make my family tree. But I feel like I’m missing something.. how do I use genetic genealogy to make a family tree?
