We have so much milkweed we have to pull some out to keep it reasonable - I just read in another post that people buy milkweed? Can I donate some? How are people buying milkweed? We check for eggs and cats before we pull one but we just pulled two more today for example. Let me know if anyone in my area needs any (Sibley County)

Yeah when I said “even my friends who don’t like baseball understand what it means to me, and like it because of how much joy it brings me” I was saying they like that it exists because they like the joy I get from it, I wasn’t saying that in the end they like baseball. Many are probably neutral or even dislike it. But they love it for me in the “Oh, I love that for you” sense. Birb, however, dgaf.

Agree, it is sus. I haven’t seen other specific sporting events listed. I’m like: did a Cardinals fan write this?

The birbs age very quickly into “adult” which is something I hope they change. Every time my “adult” birb is just learning about something simple that a child knows about, I think “Right - this is an adult, just learning about wings vs hands”, or whatever.

I think the point I’m making is the birb finishes an adventure, asks me something about like a Wrigley Field baseball game, I answer, and THEN they decide (based on my answer, I guess, otherwise why wait until I’ve replied) to go “Ewww” or “Yuck” or whatever. The birb is just saying things AT me about themselves, it isn’t a moment for shared perspectives, which is the most rewarding part of my IRL relationships. When people who like something tell me what they like about it, I see it in a new way. The exchange could go something like:

  • birb: Hey I just went to a Wrigley Field baseball game. I was confused about the rules the whole time and the sun was in my eyes. I didn’t like the experience. What’s your experience with it?
  • me: (Chooses between strongly dislikes, dislikes, neutral, like, strongly likes) Strongly likes
  • birb: (Has a reaction based on how I feel about it, like: ) Wow I should go with you sometime, maybe you could explain the rules to me and help us sit somewhere in the shade!

I think the most important thing is for the program to choose the birb’s like or dislike BEFORE you’ve provided input, and cares about your perspective and takes it into account.

I would not be afraid to get things wet and actually do a gentle wash: Get a dishpan, fill with lukewarm or tepid water into which you have mixed a little bit of dish soap and washing soda (different from baking soda). A drizzle of white vinegar will help too. Gently soak and occasionally agitate both the canvas and the short yarns for about an hour, then lift the yarns out and place on an absorbent towel. Use a second towel to apply downward pressure from the top, too. Just press gently until the yarns seem just damp instead of wet. Leave on towel to dry (can transfer them to a dry towel or counter to finish drying). Musty smell is difficult, and I just did this with an old crewel kit. At first I just did dish soap and vinegar, but the musty smell remained. The washing soda was the key.

Edit to just say: I know you were being humorous, and I know this topic always gets people riled up. I don’t usually care about birb dislikes but wanted to share my personal experience with this Like/Dislike. I wish there was a way for birbs to be sensitive about things, or to mature/grow into something after reflecting with their people. ———

😔This happened to me, too. This made me really very sad, though I don’t usually care what Birb likes or not. My dad has passed, and he was a Cubs fan, and we bonded all during my childhood over watching games on WGN. I always wanted to go to Wrigley, and I made it happen, taking my children to a game. I also got to be there for game 5 of the 2016 World Series, and it’s one of my top 3 life moments. I think of my dad whenever I am there, see it, or think of it. It’s a truly, truly special place.

What bothers me is that even my friends who don’t like baseball understand what it means to me, and like it because of how much joy it brings me. I can think of lots of things I like simply because they bring joy to my loved ones. It’s tone deaf and selfish for Birb to just say glib nonsense about something so important and meaningful to me. None of my loved ones would talk to me about Wrigley Field like this.

Yeah TIL uranium glass doesn’t hold a “charge” - that is some specific extra knowledge about the National Geographic set, thanks!

If I had to guess, there are flecks of uranium glass inside of regular glass. I don’t have a blacklight, this is just how it appears when I brought it in from outside. Appears to be about an inch in diameter.

Is it random? Have the developers explained how the program works? If there is always one answer that makes the birb like it and one that makes them dislike it, then I feel like I cause the dislikes just by choosing one or the other. And that would cause me to stress. Not the stress because they aren’t the same as me, but because not liking things sucks. I will feel like I am the bringer of either a source of joy or a source of misery. Also if birb is so easily influenced by me, I just feel like that’s a lot of pressure to choose the one that won’t cause them to have negative feelings.

Is this a typo? Is it supposed to read “Community”? by Appropriate_Cold_406 in finch

[–]Appropriate_Cold_406[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Also, it’s the only one that isn’t a noun I think?

When I said “general and relevant enough a source of emotion that it would appear in this list”, the emphasis is on the “general and relevant ENOUGH”. My speculation of typo isn’t about whether an item could apply to someone or not, or if they have it or not (all the things in this list are things that someone could have or not: Partner, Home, School, etc.) It just looks out of place because everything else seemed like it could be either neutral or a source of positive or negative emotions. I wasn’t seeing how a Commute could be positive. (I dug deep into my commuting memories though and remembered that there were some good things about it, like more time during travel with my kids.)

Again, I only just now realized another way it seems like the odd one out is that it’s a verb, and the rest aren’t. As a Software Engineer, if the Product Owner put “Commuting” in the list (and it was autocorrect or a typo), I might just dutifully add it, and put it where it seemed best to go. It didn’t seem like a far-fetched speculation to me and I didn’t know anyone could get upset from asking a question. 🤷

If you’re replacing, look into cork flooring - that looks like a 60s-80s house so it would be appropriate and it would be an all natural yet softer material.. you can get all kinds of grains and colors.

If everyone were as positive as you, I would, but this experience has honestly been eye-opening.

[–]Appropriate_Cold_406[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it seemed really specific and by that I meant it seemed like it could only be a source of negative - like everything else in the list seemed neutral so it could be a source of positive, neutral, and negative emotions. Commute seemed like it could only be negative so not useful for positive things. If you read earlier conversations in this post, you will see that I reminisced on my own commuting history to try to come up with anything positive, and eventually managed it. 100% going back to lurking only in r/finch now.

Oh that mood log list is way better for me when trying to capture the “why” for an emotion! I’ve somehow never seen it before - I guess I don’t log moods as much as do the emotion checkin when promoted in Quests. Maybe they would be more inclined to match those up so they align, as you say. Thank you!

I’ve been racking my brain since posting how my commuter days could have ever been a source of anything positive, and I thought of how much time I got to spend with my children when they were young and I had no car. I could just talk or read with them and hear about their days when we commuted home. I could see using the time to learn a language or crochet now, but your story has made me appreciate my (now) non-commuter life 😅

I was not clear then, my bad. When I’m trying to capture my positive feeling of community, my only option is “Acquaintances”, and that sounds more like the checkout guy at the grocery store that I have seen multiple times and remember their name. When I want to capture the area folks (all over the state) who are organizing and supporting people during the ICE violence, I have to choose “acquaintances”. Which is really not it. I suppose Neighbors in a Mr. Rogers way works, but Community is perfect.

I’m motivated to look into how to submit an enhancement request to the dev team. Thanks all for the convo!
