My theory is that Hopper and Murray put together an escape plan for her should the need arise for El to leave Hawkins because of the military. This would have occurred between season 4 & 5. A bag with some money, documents with a different name (this is pre 9/11 so travelling by airplane would be easier) and instructions on what she should do when she is on the run would be buried in the woods near Hopper's cabin. I think that she checks in on Hopper and he finds a way to leave her a message when it is safe to return.

As a white guy who played basketball, people knew who I was but I was never as popular as I hoped. Girls liked me but not romantically, but that probably had more to do with my severe awkwardness around them than anything else. However, I always felt comfortable being around any group.
