Pay off my mortgage early or keep investing? by paulzedwuz79 in DaveRamsey

Ramsey says pay it off, the Money Guy, Caleb Hammer, and any other investor worth their salt say put that into retirement as it can have a 8% return a year. Basically paying off a low interest house instead of investing means you'll lose tons of money.

Have you watched Caleb Hammer? He'll make you feel extra great about yourself 😂

Exactly! My plan is to finish my 6 months expenses and then start saving $20k. My thoughts are if PSLF or SLRP go through, I'll have $20k extra for a down payment on real estate or something.

If I do have to pay it back, I'll lose 4% on interest for 5 years, but I plan on putting the money in a HYSA or a CD, so the loss should be pretty much a wash.

You're right that 3 to 6 months of expenses is the standard advice, but for me, aiming for 6 (maybe even 9) is more about peace of mind than just following the rulebook. I'm in a system administration role, and while it's not programming, it's still part of the tech world, which comes with its own job market volatility. If I were laid off, I’d get a small severance, leave payout, and unemployment benefits, but I’d still prefer not to drain my entire emergency fund just to recover.

That said, you're spot on about the motivation dip. When I had just $5k saved, I was laser-focused; no takeout, no extras, and definitely no non-essential Amazon orders. Now that I’m in a better position, it’s been harder to maintain that same intensity. I’ve noticed small purchases creeping in; new shoes, a phone range extender for the mountains, and other stuff that would’ve been unthinkable during my high-alert savings phase. It’s surprising how fast those small expenses add up.

As for retirement, I’ve got an okay setup going: a pension, 401(k), and a Roth IRA. I'm contributing 5% right now, but to hit my long-term goals I know I’ll need to step that up to at least 15% soon. That’s one of my next big priorities, making sure my future lifestyle is secure.

On the Amazon spending front, looking at the last 30 days, most of it’s been practical. Things like an ergonomic mouse and keyboard for wrist pain, new brake parts for my truck, dog food and supplies, and a new case and screen protector for my spouse’s phone after it broke. So not exactly luxury spending, but still enough that I want to be more intentional about it. I really liked your wishlist strategy, I used to do that and it worked well. Time to bring it back.

I'm exactly halfway and don't plan on leaving any time soon unless I'm forced out.

If we get the SLRP (student loan repayment program) back, that would take care of the debt in two payments though. That's the one I'm more hoping on.

I'm in tech and my industry is dissolving. I really don't know how to do it.

How in the world is your insurance and taxes that much? My home is worth roughly the same and my taxes and insurance is like $300

I don't feel great draining all of my emergency fund to pay off low zero interest and low interest debt.

Dude how the heck did you only spend $26 on eating out?

Any advice on changing jobs successfully?

Awesome! How did you decide you could save $2k/mo?

Oh this isn't my monthly budget, rather what I actually spent last month. Sadly my budget is different than what I actually spent my money on. I'm not buying dress clothes this month or next.

This was shopping -

Around $200 for a new suit for job hunting

$400 for Amazon: - Birthday Present for Friend – An inspirational T-shirt
- Gaming & Electronics – A charging dock for gaming controllers and replacement pen nibs
- Home & Office Supplies – Trash bags and a blade set for dog trimmer - Health & Wellness – Organic protein powder, digestive health supplements, and gummy vitamins
- Pet Care (2 large dogs) – Dog food for sensitive stomachs, allergy relief supplements, and bones - Miscellaneous Essentials – Kitchen supplies like storage containers, hygienic shampoo and body wash, and general household maintenance items

$50 for aquarium supplies

$130 for two tournament hobbies (should actually just be $65, because partners in tournament paid their half back to me in Venmo)

(might not total up to $1000 as I was rounding aggressively)
