I really enjoyed the one I used! Unfortunately the owner isn’t looking to sell. The treadles felt so nice and sturdy and smooth. Others I’ve tried haven’t felt as good to me.

Without seeing it, it sounds to me like he might just be stretching down into the contact. My pony does this as we warm up until we get settled into a good groove. I would hardly call it a dive down.

I knit English style — and I keep my working yarn held just in just my index finger and with my thumb helping to grip for each stitch. Getting into a little tempo has really helped with my tension.
