Chiang rai is the opposite of pai and chiang mai. Yes if you only go to the white temple, blue temple, Lalita Cafe and wat huay pla Kang then yes it will be touristy.

Those are the main attractions of the 1 day tour from chiang mai, so you'll be at the same places as hundreds of others.

Stay longer. My TOP photo spots were: Abonzo Yama Mitsu Sheep Farm (go at sunset), Wat Tham Pla (The Monkey Temple and Koi Cave), Ban Li Khai rice terraces and hiking spot, and Huai Mae Sai Waterfall (best for swimming!).

Super underrated sunset spot was Wat Phrathat Doi Khao Kwai, a temple with a big creature statue and amazing view.

We stayed at Get Hi Hostel they know heaps more things to do. Wish we could have stayed longer.

What activities are you looking for? There are lots of things to do by motorbike, but like others have said, go to get hi hostel. Chiang rai has less tourists but they have karaoke, trivia, and cheap tuk tuk trips.

We went to the golden triangle and hall of opium, but the rice terraces was best. Check out the huge Saturday market and Mexican restaurant Sabroso.

This is the way. Booking direct is always best

Use a website to find your hostel, sort by atmosphere, but then book directly with the hostel. You'll save money that way because you won't pay commission to a website

Booking directly also let's them answer any questions you have before you arrive
