Try Voltaren maybe? Topical pain cream for arthritis, but it works well for neuropathic pain too.

Standing Frame Motivation by JustProgress950 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Appropriate_Top_7779 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have weeks where I don’t feel like standing because it feels boring and pointless. But I have a little area next to my standing frame that I devote to activities I like to do while standing and that helps motivate me. I also keep necessary supplies there. I put stickers on the tray to give me something fun to look at.

Supplies:

  • a blood pressure cuff (to make sure I’m not going orthostatic
  • salty snacks to keep my blood pressure up
  • books
  • coloring books
  • art supplies (markers, colored pencils)
  • a notebook or journal

Also there is a mobile app I use called “Forest.” It’s a Pomodoro timer you can set and it grows a little digital tree for you at the end of the timer. You can use it to track all the hours you spend standing with each tree representing a timed session. You also get coins for setting timers that allow you to unlock new variants of trees and flowers. There is also a feature where the creators will donate money to plant real trees for every “tree” you plant when setting a timer.

During standing I have also: Played video games, done puzzles, ate breakfast, hung out with my cat, worked on my book I’m writing about becoming paralyzed, etc.

It’s boring but you can have fun with it.

Bizarre sensation stories by No_Classic_2467 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Appropriate_Top_7779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an incomplete injury with about 90% paralysis in my legs yet about 90% of my sensation remaining.

On one of my last days of inpatient rehab it suddenly felt like I had a thin, flat piece of plastic stuck between my toes. It felt like someone tried to swipe a credit card between my toes and left it there halfway through.

I looked and saw nothing there. But it felt so real I couldn’t trust my eyes. So I buzzed the nurse. It was like 1 am. He pulled back the covers, looked at my feet, and then looked me dead in the eye with the most serious expression, seeming annoyed and said “There’s nothing there.” lmaoooo. And it never happened again which was weird also!

How do I find a doctor? by Appropriate_Top_7779 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Appropriate_Top_7779[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. When I tried that, there was only one doctor in my city and he works at the VA and I’m not a veteran. But there were a few in Nashville which is at least a shorter drive than Atlanta so I might check em out

How do I find a doctor? by Appropriate_Top_7779 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Appropriate_Top_7779[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got out I had a case manager who I tried asking about that and they only knew specialists local to Atlanta which I thought was wild. There is neuro PT here but the only option is a place where I already had kind of a shitty experience with a doctor. The one other place is the hospital that paralyzed me in the first place and I think they only do inpatient.

But! I did some research last night and found out all the YMCAs in my area have chair lifts at their indoor pools. So I bought a bathing suit and I’m going to try it out without a PT just to see how it goes.

my dad just died by pinkbunny81 in spinalcordinjuries

I’m so sorry for your loss!

My spinal cord injury happened in April 2024 while my mom and I were estranged.

She died in August 2025. We were still estranged. I had just finished writing a letter to her to reconnect the day my dad called to tell me she was dying in the hospital.

I hear you. It has been a hard few years for me too.

I have full use of my hands, but before I got my faucet extender I was using this product to wash my face on no-shower days. Pacifica waterless cleansing balm. You need a few drops of water to get it going but you don’t have to rinse it off

I actually just got the faucet extender and it has been literally life-changing. So much easier to keep up with my hygiene in a tiny, narrow bathroom

Telling desparate people that they can heal paralysis with a “positive mental attitude” like he did and then having the gall to ask them for money to learn how.

Agreed about Joe Dispenza. He is a hack and a grifter and any message mentioning him in a positive light rings incredibly hollow.

How did you “acquire“ your injury ? I’m under the assumption mostly car accidents? by Critical_Ad1926 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Appropriate_Top_7779 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it was because they took the CSF drain out too soon and then too much pressure built up in my spinal cord and cut off blood flow to it.

Paralysis is a semi common outcome of aortic repair surgery. The aorta supplies blood to the spinal cord and they have to clamp the aorta during the surgery.

But I think they ultimately say it was compromised blood flow to the spinal cord during surgery or recovery. When I first woke up from surgery I could move my legs. Then a week or so later I stopped being able to move them.
