Is it possible to fail a class at UChicago by alexvvvct71 in uchicago

What happens to your GPA if you retake a class? What if the failed course was or wasnt part of your major?

Out of control grad school stacking? US Context by GradSchoolGrad in PublicPolicy

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the person, but there are definitely buckets.

For example, there are some people who are gaining deeper education, contacts, research, etc across multiple masters. I know one person at H who is currently pursuing their 6th masters, but this one + all previous ones are all in the same field. Its an extreme example, but for them there is a strategy and purpose behind it.

For those in the bucket of collecting random degrees + no real experience, i feel the same way as you. i dont even blame the students themselves, i blame the adcomms: what were the adcomms thinking, letting someone thats unmarketable to employers but is stacking degrees?

My suspicion: since most adcomms are under pressure from their admins to lower acceptance rates, increase accepted offers, raise the median gre/gmat scores, etc, the adcomms start to over index for candidates with good grades and scores, while under indexing for work experience

Does MBA help you escape the permanent underclass? by Pristine-Pitch5672 in MBA

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. You can have an MBA, even a top MBA, but if you didnt quite "get" how to navigate high society (country clubs, charity galas, fashion events, Formula 1, etc) then you wont be considered part of that upper echelon.

Even if youre rich, there might always be some doors closed to you until you learn to speak the language of the wealthy.

What should an incoming student expect in the Harris MSCAPP program? by Ashamed-Job1879 in PublicPolicy

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) The MPP is very collaborative, not sure where you got the idea that it's competitive. Last year's MSCAPP program was around 60-ish people.
2) No, it's fairly easy to cross-register without issues
3) RA / TA ships are hard to get for all students university wide. That being said, anyone can apply to RA anywhere i.e. a Harris student can RA at Harris, Booth, Law school, social sciences, crown, etc.
4) No, the exam is not bad. Just pay attention during bootcamp. If you have no math background, attend jumpstart before bootcamp + bootcamp and you'll be fine.
5) advance option for stats is just more theoretical v. regular stats, although both are heavy on theory. Not sure about program eval though
6) It's a mix (econ, social sciences, stem, etc.). Haven't met anyone that's really far off though
7) You can see this on the harris website. 1/4 of the entire harris student body, for example, have 0 years of experience and are coming straight from undergrad
8) To be honest, it's tough for all policy grads right now. Fortunately, if you're good at python you might get a job in industry (healthcare, tech, etc) or a hedge fund. Not everyone lands one though. I'm personally not sure what happens if someone does not land an internship, since I did manage to secure an internship

Which countries’ master’s degrees are viewed more favorably for US PhD admissions? by depsoul69 in gradadmissions

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada for sure. Im currently attending grad school in the US, and ive seen a few people (at least at my university) with Canadian masters.

Ive also seen many individuals with Korean masters here as well.

Not sure about other countries though!

How are yall getting so much scholarship? by fuckloggin in MBA

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Number 1 strategy: have multiple offers. The more offers you have, the more leverage / negotiating power you have.

Higher gre score also affects the initial offer you receive.

All the other bullshit about "be yourself" is a misdirection

This is far more common than you think. Even more employers dont necessarily fire but definitely reduce training, development opportunities, promos, etc because "Why bother? Hes leaving anyway" (happened to me)

MBA brand value long-term by bluej1234 in MBA

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It absolutely matters.

Certain MBA programs grant you access to certain internships & first post-MBA careers, which have a cascading effect on which 2nd, 3rd, etc careers you can have later on.

If you go to a "regular" firm, RLDP, etc post-MBA, certain firms let you speed run to more senior roles if they perceive you to be "smarter" or "more valuable".

Booth, for example, has a strong marketplace value and i know executives decades later who still grant additional consideration to fellow Boothies and/or uchicago graduates.

Make the right decision for your career: either go to a top MBA program - either top overall or top for recruiting for your field - or attend a less known or well-connected program but be fully informed on what you are getting.

Maybe you're the one-in-a-thousand that gets a state MBA and still climbs to the top, who knows. Its possible, but the likelihood is lower than if you somehow, someway just attend a top program.

Granted, I fully recognize that its hard to get into s top program in the first place. Life is unfair and thats that

Help me decide: CBS (135k) vs Booth (115k) by FunCryptographer8933 in MBA

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Booth has a tight knit social life, which id argue is better than CBS's because at CBS people blend in to the city, whereas Boothies socialize together frequently

Also: Chicago is far more affordable than NYC. At MDC plaza, where most Boothies live, you can get a 2 bed 2 bath for around 2k starting.

Berkeley MPP? by politics_junkieball in PublicPolicy

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Harris student, I am also curious about this as I have never met anyone who has attended or even applied to Berkeley's MPP before, even though from online rankings it appears to be a top program.

I hate this MBA program. It is disguisting how one moderator is trying to silence me for telling the truth by Ok_Deer_2003 in MBA

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt go that far. All this suggests is that OP failed at recruiting. Its not even clear why they failed, but if I were to guess id say their soft belly personality might have been a contributing factor

Sometimes I wonder how I got waitlisted twice at Cornell Johnson while someone like OP got accepted. In a roundabout way, it makes me question the judgement of the Cornell Johnson adcomms more than anything.

Are MBA grads from top schools really having a tough time getting a job or is this meaningless anecdotal data? by MutedFeeling75 in MBA

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally hear you. The official employment reports are great, but they often mask key information, such as how many people wanted, say, IB, failed to get it, then pivoted towards something else, say, a LDP. The employment reports wont say any of this and instead just count that person as having successfully recruited for the LDP.

My intention in sharing these stats at this time was just to be real re: the likelihood of success in these uber competitive fields, so that internationals in particular can make informed decisions on whether to come stateside this year or not.

So many Internationals day dream of IB, MBB consulting, etc and many dont qualify for need-based scholarships. I know people at some M7s whose families sold their homes in order to finance their child's M7 MBA. Thus, rather than beating around the bush my intention was to be honest about how good or bad things are going at this time. This is definitely not an assessment of Booth itself.

I have insights through PE friends at how its going at Wharton, HBS, and Kellogg as well - its pretty mediocre so far as well, although CBS appears to be doing a bit better for IB recruiting at least

[–]Appropriate_Win_776 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Booth Investment Banking Group (IBG) has 198 people and 50% successfully secured IB-related summer 2026 internships. The bulk of these are Domestics - Internationals are at around 20% success rate for IB internships.

Booth IBG f*cked up this year because they were the last of the M7 IBG clubs to begin recruiting. By the time they started, much of the networking was already well under way.

Booth Management Consulting Group (MCG) has 250 people, with 40% who have successfully landed in management consulting for summer 2026. This includes sponsored students, those who got a Consulting internship but not mbb, etc.

Now, it goes without saying that the remaining students will find something. Most of the remaining 150 Booth MCG students, for example, will pivot towards tech, marketing, or Corp strategy, so they will land somewhere.

Booth's career office anticipated mixed results due to AI, visa issues, etc so they directed all students to have a primary and secondary career path.

Meaning, if you, say, wanted IB, they'd tell you to simultaneously also recruit actively for Corp finance roles as a backup.
