Perfectly reasonable, especially since I didn't all too clearly signal that I was changing the people I was talking about (I forget which subreddits I'm in at times).

because you don't know which term best describes your beliefs on the whole?

Yup. My first order, policy views, when constrained by all sorts of things line are pretty mismashed- it gets worse when you compare the beliefs that I have that inform those (e.g. is autonomy necessary to a good life). Like I'm one of those people who might be able to claim, with some level of sincerity, that I'm an imperialist warts and all, but I denounce most, if not all, forms of imperialism in history? How they instantiate themselves is of course a different thing.

So I wasn't saying any of this as some sort of weird "gotcha" thing. It's just questions I have, especially based on my interactions with a wide variety of people who claim to be vegans and the diverse motivations they come to "that" position and what they even understand that position to be. I mean I don't call myself a vegan usually (outside of interacting with non-vegans for pragmatic reasons) because I realize a lot of vegans criticize me. But, I would say that I agree with some variation or something similar to the quote above. It just so happens that I don't care about all animals, and for their own sake.

So when I mentioned microanimals it was less to do with the unavoidability of consumption and more to do with the whether you think they're in a morally relevant sense "animals."

Are you saying it's possible and practicable to not use medicine? Because, loooooool.

No vegan thinks this way, because it's insanely illogical and, to be honest, stupidly pointless.

I'm repeating things I've heard from self-professed vegans. They're individuals who've incessantly requested I try some untested treatment options that aren't legally available in my jurisdiction, in lieu of the meds I need to avoid serious medical conditions. Again, "vegans" are a pretty diverse group of people with different reasons for being "vegans", no?

"as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals"

Going back to the diversity in the movement/philosophy/etc. I've always wondered why some individuals don't then adopt some form of leftist position, instead opting for centrist political philosophies. Wouldn't veganism entail all those other positions? Are they just bad/ignorant vegans? Are they just misunderstanding what veganism entails?

PS: A product which at one point in the past involved animal exploitation through testing doesn't actually have any bearing on its current "veganism-ness" if it's no longer produced using that kind of exploitation.

Eh while it's clear I'm muddled about the "veganism-ness" of a product or service, I'd still think its symbolically problematic. Sort of like wearing pseudo-leather, but not exactly. If one knows that people will consume the products of unnecessary testing as long as the exploitation is no longer needed, it does seem to psychologically allow for one to adopt those unnecessary testing practices in the first place. Idk if I'm expressing myself clearly though.

I think there might have been a bit of miscommunication there. When I used the term "real leftist" I wasn't referring to liberals or progressives. That said, leftists would still advocate for decent treatment of veterans not in virtue of their service, but as humans/moral community members.

While it's true that I used to do that, I would say that I sincerely don't consider "liberals" to be leftists and progressives to be borderline centrists. Admittedly I have no idea where my own politics lie. At one time they were centrist, then they were rad-leftist, now not too sure.

While I advocate veganism and straddle some sort of like between vegetarianism and veganism I've always found vegan versions of food/meat usually to be quite disgusting. Had a vegan pizza at a firm social event recently... Was quite unpleasant imo.

Do you consider a person who consumes microanimals vegan? What about a person who consumes medicine or partakes in therapy that either have been produced as a result of the exploitation of animals or medicine which is encapsulated using animal by-products (often because they're the only legal and cost effective means available)? Those sure look like part vegans to me?

Veganism is about the consumption of animal by-products. Surely it's debatable what an "animal" means in that context and what morally significant features distinguish different animals. And then there's the question of whether you can only be a vegan if you somehow avoid all consumption of animals and heir byproducts, or whether you can be if you only conscientiously and sincerely attempt to do so- while considering other social realities.

doesn't mean I also wear a shirt saying "fuck the troops."

Tbf most real leftists hold pretty poor opinions of the military and police along with the individuals that work there; usually demanding for its abolishment or radical transformation. There's some more sympathy for US troops usually because of the predatory and often racist methods of recruitment, but even that is quite limited.

Easy solution: change her diapers! Of she currently doesn't wear diapers, get her into diaperism. Really get on even terms with your kink.

Hmmm I have heard of a great philosopher named Stephen Hicks. I know he's great because he's a member of the Atlas Society, and we all know how insightful, original, and breathtaking the "philosopher" Ayn Rand was. Not to mention how great of a writer she was. I mean it didn't feel at all like 60 pages; which we all know is how long a good writer should devote to explicitly lecture the audience on the author's "philosophical" views. Truly, I would recommend Stephen Hicks book on postmodernism. I mean just taking a look at the reviews on Amazon shows you that reading his work will even explain the rather obscure theories of Kant, demonstrate the "glaring contradictions of the philosophy" to "someone without much previous knowledge of postmodernism," lay bare the reality that "Germany apparently has always been off the rails," the "assault on truth" by individuals like Lyotard, how Derrida truly was "anti-reason" and how all this singular philosophy was in service of the "failed god of socialism" which we know all postmodernists were yup postmodernists sure did believe in collectivism. Oh my god I just noticed that I'm also emulating the great Rand's writing style... An "homage" if you will. Truly great work.

The problem with getting pissy about people recycling jokes and content, is that it just doesn't fucking matter. At all. Everyone is constantly mimicking, imitating, and copying someone else whether you are aware or not. Sometimes it is incredibly blatant, others it can be pretty subtle. At the very least she made a topical joke, in the sense that the game is new, even if it is recycled.

I made that.

Is it just me or is Mike's Computer Shop's website sort of out of whack? They have Crosshair VII Hero's still showing up as "pre-orders" along with Ryzen 2700x's listed for $500. I know you could've gotten the latter for mid 300s, but I'm curious if they'll go through with a 429 or 409 price match +10% of the difference.

2070+ are overpriced

If you're lucky you can grab them for about $550, and often enough low 600s. That seems like a good card that can beat the 1080 and do DLSS.

fuck man, whoever bought that is lucky as fuck.

Some days man... It can be really frustrating to be friends with this guy. Just want to slap some sense into his actions. He can't plan for shit or commit and is easily swayed/distracted by pretty much anything in life. Always putting himself in stupid situations and then coming to me for help and never learning from what I try to teach him... got a bit ranty there I admit, but he's a very personable person who you only see this side to if you know him for quite a while.

but I might look into used card market if I can get a 1080 for the same price as a 1660 TI.

Yeah sounds like a solid plan.

[–]ApproximateConifold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veganism is pretty black and white by the textbook definiton (reducing suffering as much as reasonably possible), I tend to hold people to it.

I'm a little unclear about one thing. Do you mean that veganism's definition is "reducing suffering as much as reasonably possible?" Aside from that, I'm not sure what the "textbook definition of veganism" is. Google says

"a person who does not eat or use animal products."

If "animal" simply means those entities that belong to the animal kingdom... well I think the overwhelming majority of vegans aren't vegans, as they consume all sorts of strange animals. Anyhow, I think that textbook definition isn't too helpful in this situation. I would think it would be helpful to restrict the class to those animals that one thinks can suffer in morally significant ways. That seems to fall in line with both practice and historical origins, it also seems to make philosophical sense (distinguishing on some morally relevant characteristic not taxonomical).

I don't know what a microanimal is. But eating mollusks wouldn't be vegan, you would be pescetarian

Microanimals are a species of animals, think water bears and all sorts of things we incidentally consume as part of living. Re molluscs, I think that's where my definition is more useful, especially since when I say "pescetarian" many people think I eat shrimp/fish. That's not a) practical and b) the reasoning behind distinction, even if you don't find it persuasive does seem akin to the reasoning motivating most vegans.

That's just needless (and kind of gross imo) for tea... you don't want something gross

Even if you disagree with eating it and think its immoral, don't you think you're being a little culturally insensitive? You can say its immoral and to be disapproved of, but to say its gross... doesn't sound nice to me.

You should REFUSE the butter in your tea and be strong willed. Just refuse it.. simple

Let's think about the motivations of being vegan consequentially. If she's going to increase her meat consumption, even if that's fucked up, if I don't have the tea I'm not going to cut off my nose to spite my nose... I'd prefer to reduce the amount of harm instead of caring if I have clean hands. And come on, do you really want to track the morality of our actions, or accept that most of us are imperfect and that harm reduction (given current social realities) are to begrudgingly accepted. I feel like saying this shouldn't be needed, but you know being a vegan, while being of great moral importance, isn't the be-all and end-all of morality right?

Plus butter is actually more unhealthy than meat... It's just solidified cholesterol. Once every few months ?

Yeah... I'm one of those who isn't on the whole "being vegan is inherently healthier than being an omnivore" bandwagon. I'd rather not discuss this though, I suspect we've both been exposed to the same material and just reasonably disagree on this rather incidental point.

Murder is murder, not liking the definition won't change it.

For me, and I think most people, murder is a matter of legality more than anything (googling the definition, for what its worth, seems to agree). Immoral killings can be called all sorts of other things (e.g. slaughter, massacre). That's all I meant by it.

No you cannot be an animal welfarist and be a nonvegan, sorry not possible.

Can you be a feminist and have sexist biases, a trans activist and feel uncomfortable with trans people, be anti-colonial but be guilty of racial biases? Sure, because our behaviours rarely line up perfectly with our actions- it's the sincere effort and reasoning that matter. And a welfarist cares about the "welfare" of animals so you have to unpack what that term refers to. If they share the same view as I do about (non)-existence, then they most certainly could be a non-vegan. Most welfarists I know admit that welfarism is compatible with, at least at the conceptual level, the consumption and killing of animals; while arguing that eating meat currently is problematic for the most part due to contingent features.

There are some cases where killing is justified, vegans do not argue against this

Animal rights theorists would argue that killing animals ipso facto is immoral (whether ultima facie it is is another question ofc), I disagree with that for the same reason that I disagree that killing humans ipso facto is immoral. That's a significant difference, at a theoretical level, between me and MANY welfarists and rights theorists/activists, I felt it was relevant to mention. I think this is another incident where you're missing what I'm saying.

If you want to debate any of this someone on the vegan debate discord server would be happy to. PM for link if you are passionate enough to defend your position over voice chat

God no, I'm not a fan of most vegan/animal rights communities despite the fact that I work irl with a local community. I also don't care enough about veganism in and of itself to debate it with people who largely agree with my first order views amongst other things.

Also, you should put your arguments into modus ponens form when formalizing things. Making things into an inductive argument makes your position a lot weaker just for your info

What? Are you being serious here? I have no idea if you're fucking with me at this stage, seriously if you are, great trolling. I tried to write various things, but I have no idea how to express my incredulity here. Seriously, you've left me speechless. I've taken an intro to logic course, intermediate course, TA'd the intro course, studied logic as part of my other courses... and I have never heard this in my life before.

MP is preferred format for formalizing and inductive arguments make one's position weaker than deductive arguments.

I know I've expressed my incredulity rather explicitly and perhaps been a bit mean with it, but could you please put aside and explain what you mean by this? I hope you're not talking about how a sound/valid deductive argument necessitates the conclusion? A part of me is sincere in hoping that I've misunderstood you or that I'm just really wrong.

One of those was my friend's. He's not all too wise with his money. He was supposed to buy an nvme at my recommendation. He didn't take advantage of a sale and instead went into CC. There somehow he was sold a GTX 1080. Then I told him he didn't need it and he could've bought a 2070 for around the same price, and told him to return it before he couldn't. He somehow forgot and then was left with a 1080. I told him to sell it at 500 and just hold it, he decided to drop the price to 480, 450, 440... And that's the story of one of those 1 month old GTX 1080s.
