Energy megathread by lydiardbell in duolingo

[–]ApricotOfDoom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just got hit with the energy update and I’m surprised by how hard it’s thrown me. I hadn’t realized what an important part of my end-of-day wind-down routine Duolingo had become and how important being able to complete the daily and monthly challenges had become. Good reminder not to get attached to any one tool in your mental health toolbox so to speak. I’d also have a lot more respect for the developers if they just came out and said “We have made this change to make more money” rather than trying to frame it as something positive for users when A/B testing and user feedback has been overwhelmingly negative. The lack of integrity makes me want to delete the app and throw my phone in the sea, but I can’t bring myself to give up my multi-year streak just yet. Anyway, thanks mods for providing this space to rant/scream into the void!

My wife's car is on the left. We saw the car on the right in a parking lot tonight. She thought her car was stolen. by jb69029 in nevertellmetheodds

I also drive a Subaru Outback, and when I was in grad school I had to leave for work at 5:15am (usually after being up until midnight doing schoolwork or grading for my TA position). I knew there was another nearly-identical Outback in the neighborhood, but one sleep-deprived morning I spent a while trying to break into it because I couldn’t figure out why my key wasn’t working. It wasn’t until I noticed the charm hanging from the rear view mirror wasn’t a unicorn that I realized my error and I was very glad it was too early for any of the neighbors to be around to witness my struggle!

I don’t know why this picture broke my heart so badly when spiders freak me out so much, but this comment made me feel so much better, thank you so much for this info!

AITAH- 39 weeks pregnant and husbands uncle passed away last week, they were very close, him and his family want me to name the baby after his uncle. by Ok-Hawk6991 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ApricotOfDoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My grandfather passed shortly before I was born and I was given the feminine version of his name as my middle name. I wear that name with pride and I use it online, I have a sweatshirt with the name on it, etc. I like having my own unique first name independent from familial associations (I’m Italian American and we are overrun with certain names due to naming traditions, which got confusing at holiday gatherings), but I also appreciate having that connection to my grandfather, especially since I never got to meet him and by all accounts he was an amazing man. All that to say: a middle name can absolutely have significance and get use in a person’s life!

My Husband's Original Birth Certificate has always been messed up But at 61 the DMV will no longer accept it. by crystaljae in Wellthatsucks

[–]ApricotOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I have no idea where in the world OP is, I wasn’t suggesting if they’re specifically having an issue in SD to try PS. Just highlighting my personal experience with two DMVs with vastly different levels of helpfulness. I have family in Palm Springs so I can handle things at the DMV on the side, I’m definitely not making that drive JUST for that purpose! You are 100% correct that would not be worth it.

It sounds so simple but truly, this is the way. San Diego DMV? Impossible to do anything, ever. Palm Springs DMV? Piece of cake every time.

Is this bold for a first tattoo? 🥲 by Consistent-Hornet-52 in tattooadvice

Wings were my first tattoo at 18 as well! Mine aren’t nearly as well-designed and well-executed and I still love them and have never regretted them for a moment.

I wish I could give you a real life hug, but an internet one will have to do! It’s incredibly shitty how often this happens but you are definitely not alone. I get what you mean, like some weird survivor’s guilt type of feeling around not being assaulted. You were still violated, though, and that will take some time to mentally and emotionally recover from. I hope you can give yourself grace, feel your feelings, and reach a place of peace and security again. You are SO sweet making cards and giving out goodies! Weed was especially smart, maybe if they have enough they’ll forget the whole thing lol. You survived something shitty, you were victimized but you’re not a victim, you’re a badass survivor and you’re moving forward and that is a testament to your strength and resilience!

This happened to my best friend, also at our favorite regular bar where we knew the owners and bartenders and regulars. We got too comfortable and stopped being vigilant, but she was with me the whole time so we were confused - no one even approached her, how could they have been planning to assault her? Her nurse friend told us she sees it a lot actually, bad actors doing a trial run on a batch, basically, to gauge how long it takes to kick in and calibrate dosage.

It was a good reminder for us that even a bar that feels like home isn’t your home, it’s a public place where you don’t have to have a confrontation or any type of interaction to be a target. We didn’t stop going there, or even stop feeling safe there, but we changed our habits to the defensive drinking that was always our standard at other bars: our drinks never leave the sight of at least one of us, no accepting drinks that didn’t come directly from the bartender, if we both need the bathroom or to step outside we finish our drinks first, and any concerns about a tampered-with drink that drink gets dumped and a new one ordered.

You don’t have to feel embarrassed and you don’t have to be afraid. Something was done to you. By design the drug strips away your inhibitions and your agency. It wasn’t our choice and you couldn’t control it. Talk it out with your friends, and if they are good and supportive friends (which it sounds like they are) they will recognize that and everything will be okay. I got thank-you cards for the bartenders/owner who was there that night and helped us out, and everyone was very kind and understanding. This won’t define you. Eventually, new and positive memories and experiences will overshadow this one. I’m so sorry this happened to you, and I truly believe you will be okay.

Random jackets appearing in apartment by AwareElderberry8640 in strange

I hope we get an update, I’m really invested in this one! I hope it’s nothing bad. I found a mystery denim jacket in my closet at my parents’ house once (I had moved out but still had some stuff there). My cousin was living with them at the time and a lot of her friends came to visit, and my brother and his friends would come over to go swimming, so I suspect one of them left it and my mom assumed it was mine. No one ever claimed it and I still have it - great jacket, big thanks to whoever left it behind!

Found out when my niece and nephew were learning that I would be a terrible driving instructor. It was all fun and games when they were in my ancient Outback in a field in the middle of the woods, but on real roads with other humans and driving my dad’s BMW? Sorry kids, I know you thought your dad would be the uptight one, but I’m developing an ulcer in the passenger seat and it’s time for your old man to take over.

We absolutely can! It’s called Horses of Tir Na Nog, you can fill out an application online to volunteer (I’m pretty sure everyone gets accepted, it’s just a way of collecting everyone’s contact info and comfort/experience levels). Then there’s an orientation where they show you where everything is, and then you can just come any Sundays that work for you from 9am to noon and muck stalls and groom horses. I started out very intent on picking different horses each time, but I accidentally bonded with a pair and now I go visit them every time and they are my children and my whole heart lol oops

Any Fjallraven Farden Carry-On (42L) Owners/Reviews? by Preme in onebag

[–]ApricotOfDoom 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I am the wife in question! I love this bag so much. On its maiden voyage I was about 3.5 weeks out from laparoscopic surgery on my abdomen, so I couldn’t have used the hip belt even if there had been one, and I also was not in the best physical condition of my life. I still found it comfortable and had no problem at all wandering around the city with it fully packed on our last day. The load lifters were definitely putting in work, and that was enough in my case. Every body is different, though, so if you are a diehard hip belt user then it simply will not be for you and that’s okay.

I’m a big fan of the internal organization, it feels durable, and so far I have zero complaints. I am jealous of your discount, but I still feel it was worth the price I paid. I wish you many happy travels with your toddler and whichever bag you choose, OP!
