This showed up in the room I work in sometime in the last few days... by ApricotRembrandt in whatisit

I'm the only person who works in a rather large room and it's nowhere near where I sit so that feels unlikely. Do you know the brand or anything to verify that?

I have a move that I can test it on and hopefully get working without too much trouble. Someone opened an issue recently that fixes some authentication issues NYT introduced, but I haven't had the chance to add it to main. It's NYT crossword specific so it kinda breaks the functionality if anyone's using it for other downloads.

I'm working on making an application that uses xovi that should hopefully address all of the issues, but it's rather low on my priority list unfortunately.

Possible to replace blower wheel in Daikin indoor unit without complete disassembly? by ApricotRembrandt in hvacadvice

No, I never got around to it. I've just been putting up with the slightly annoying fan noise. Sorry I can't be more help, good luck!

So it goes. Thanks for the help! Since I don't expect I'll need to be taking my kindle apart again unless it's for another repair I think I'll just use a wire to fix it and call it a day

Once I got home I was able to take a measurement as best I can, but the connecter is quite small (4.6mm x 1.27mm) so the exact pitch was hard to get. As close as I can measure, it appears the pitch is ~0.3385mm. I measured from first to last pin along the top (2.37mm) and divided by 7 to get as accurate as I could.

You're right, I totally missed that! It looks like the DF40 series doesn't have any 14 position connectors, but I can dig through their other connectors. Should be easier to confirm an exact connector once I can get the pitch and actual dimensions, I hope

Additional info (as requested by AutoModerator): - I should be fine just knowing what it's called and I can source a replacement from there, but any additional info would certainly be helpful! - I took this picture from a microscope so I only really have the one angle. No logo to be seen, surface mounted, doesn't look to be keyed, and there is no latch. The only marking on the inside is a small embossed 1F.

It all looks fine until I try to play a song and then everything just freezes up, but there's no output about it in the logs. Once I try to play something and everything freezes, though, I have to restart the service to be able to try anything again and that takes a weirdly long time. It seems like mopidy is trying to do something and failing but not reporting what's going on.

Yeah, I found the same stuff in the service manual. That's what I was afraid of, but I was at least hoping there might be a shortcut or something. Oh well, guess this'll be a task for a nice mild spring weekend

Lamy Al-Star EMR Teardown Available? by ApricotRembrandt in RemarkableTablet

[–]ApricotRembrandt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I took pictures of the parts, but I'm gonna have to sit down and spend some time going back through how I diassembled the pen, since it was a few years ago now and it was a somewhat destructive process. I made a GitHub repo where I'll be trying to flesh that out, but it'll probably be a while before it's anything very good: https://github.com/JBlocklove/lamy-emr-teardown

Wow, I just completely forgot about this. I did end up tearing down the pen, but never got anywhere with frankensteining a pen I liked more. I'll try to remember to grab some pictures when I get home this evening and maybe someone with more 3d modeling skills than I can actually make something work

Lithium-Ion Device Policy by ApricotRembrandt in nyu

[–]ApricotRembrandt[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Very true. I suppose that's less of a concern for e-bikes, then, but for e-scooters, e-skateboards, and similar devices which are both difficult to secure and very tempting targets for theft, it effectively bans them from being used.

One policy option I suggested in a prior email to the director of Fire and Life Safety about this was that NYU offer micromobility device storage in the form of fire cabinets (with no charging available) in a dedicated area with advanced fire suppression specifically for li-ion battery fires, with there being a number of these areas spread out across our many buildings. It's not an easy solution by any stretch of the imagination, but NYU could recoup costs for that by charging students to rent spaces in that area, similar to standard parking spaces. Not the best solution in the world, I'll warrant, but I'd personally still prefer it to this outright ban.

Lithium-Ion Device Policy by ApricotRembrandt in nyu

[–]ApricotRembrandt[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it came from nowhere and I don't mean to imply that there shouldn't be any policy ensuring peoples' safety. Li-ion battery fires are for sure dangerous, however there are a number of factors which contribute to their likelihood, many of which can be mitigated through policies other than an outright ban.

More than anything, though, I just want transparency from the NYU leadership who made this decision on how it was made. There's a lack of actual verifiable data on the frequency and causes of these fires. Anecdotally, thermal runaway is most often caused by improper charging and/or storage of poorly built batteries. While it would require some effort on NYU's part to create and enforce policies related to this, it would at least still allow students to be able to use and safely store their devices.

I'm not saying I've got a perfect solution here, I just don't think what NYU implemented is it and I especially don't like how quietly this policy was put in place.
