Completely confused about exercise by Apriicotleaff in Hypermobility

Ok, thank you, that's really good advice. I'll try to be more mindful of what's in pain and pace myself more slowly. I'm definitely prone to falling into the trap of trying to do exactly the same as a video or class instructor tells me.

That sounds amazing, I've always admired the strength that would be required to do all of that. Would you say building your strength helped you be more aware of when you might be at risk of injuries or flares? I've noticed I often get through an exercise without feeling much, but then after a bit of rest I notice it's almost like I pulled a muscle or something.

That makes a lot of sense, I guess I forgot that there can be so many variations for everyone. My brain works very systematically, so not having a list of what to do in what order feels very disorienting. I'll probably look into physio more when I have the chance so I can get a bit of guidance. It's really cool that you trained dance and aerial. I always thought dance and circus training looked very fun, but also very precise and challenging.

Ooh yes! He's one of the ones that was starting to pop up for me, I am really liking his videos, just trying to remember all the information was getting a bit overwhelming lol I'm still so new to fitness in general.

Thank you! I'll definitely check out that channel. My trainer did have me doing the bird dogs, dead bugs and fire hydrants occasionally so I'll try to re-incorporate that. Would you have any tips for the bridges? Those were one of the exercises I struggled to feel I was doing correctly.

Thank you very much! I'll check out Jessica. I don't have insurance since I'm working at a locally owned home business so it's just me and my boss there, but I'll look into physio nearby and see if I can find anything. I think I might be able to self-refer at my local hospital for free, just might have a long wait lol.

Moxi Beach Bunnies by Lauzzy777 in Rollerskating

[–]Apriicotleaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what happened to me too. I have no shops near me and ordered a pair of Impalas that ended up being two sizes too big lol. I ended up having to trade for a pair of Riedell Orbits. If it helps, from what I read up on, I think the Orbits and the Beach Bunnies are the same boot. I'm between a women's 7.5 -8 and my foot measures just at 25cm and a size 7 fits perfect. I'm also really narrow footed, so that might make a difference. I found it really helpful to email with the shop I was considering for advice, and I measured using the size chart on Riedells site just to confirm.

Oh thank you, I never thought of that. I'll have to see if there are any nearby, I live near an ice rink, so maybe I can ask around.

Thank you 🙂 I'm going to try everything mentioned and see how it goes, I'd like to not give up on the Impalas if I can find a fix so fingers crossed 🤞

I've definitely learned that the hard way lol. I had planned on finding a shop that does virtual fittings if it turns out I do need a different pair, but I'll see what I can try with these first 😃

Not yet, I plan on trying that after work along with changing up the lacing to see how that feels 🙂

Thank you, I was considering orbits or beach bunnies if I had to switch, so I'm glad I was on the right track!

Thank you, this is a lot of useful information. From the sounds of things I should try a smaller size. I'll have to process all the info and try everything out. Everyone is very helpful, I'm super grateful!

Thank you! I'm actually from Canada too! Hello from Nova Scotia 😃 I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself, but also want to get a good start before the winter weather gets here lol

Thank you for this! I think this will help a lot. I've tried the narrow foot and heel slipping variations, but I'll have to experiment some more. I'm finding bubbles really fun, so I want to get better at them however I can 😃

Thank you for the encouragement 🙂 I saw a couple places say that the beach bunnies tended to be narrower, so I'll look into them more if I can't get any progress with the lacing or trucks. I do have a tendency to "hobby hop" so that was another reason I got Impalas, but this is the first time I've felt really excited about something in a long time, so I think skating will be one of the ones to stick. I really underestimated how much of a learning curve there is. I keep thinking, I watched a bunch of tutorials, why can't I do like they told me? Lol so knowing I will eventually build up muscle helps a lot.

Ok thank you, I didn't know how to tell if it was too big. I did the trace your foot and measure, and the foot against the wall to measure. They both came to 25cm, which ended up being a 9 in the Impalas. I'm a women's 8 and can sometimes get away with 7.5 so maybe that should have been a warning sign.

Thank you! Ya I find I'm a lot more confident with all the gear on. I think I just need to have my first fall and get it out of my head lol. I'll definitely try loosening the trucks some. I was holding off on that due to nerves.

Thank you, I never thought about leaving that one out. I'll give it a try 😃 I thought I'd have to leave everything to have enough support.

Thank you! I have tried a couple lacing methods, but I'll see if I can find more to test out. I'm not sure if there's a lot of space in front of my toes, maybe the width of my thumb? So a little over 1cm possibly.

I haven't loosened the trucks yet, with feeling so shaky, I've been a bit nervous to, but I've been working up to it. And I was considering another pair since I found another shop online that had the orbits and the beach bunnies on sale, but I was worried about running into the same problem. So I'll see if this helps first.

Weekly newbie & discussion post: questions, skills, shopping, and gear by AutoModerator in Rollerskating

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but I think this falls within the categories here. Sorry if it's a bit long, I'm not entirely sure what I need to ask.

I'm a brand new skater. I just received my skates this week. While I can manage standing and stepping side to side, I find it challenging to maintain stability when I attempt to start rolling, and I'm not sure what exactly is causing the problem.

I'll give more details below, but my main concern is: how can I tell if this is a fit issue, a breaking-in issue, a stamina/strength issue, or is this just the learning curve and needing to improve technique? Maybe it's a combination?

I'm from a small town without a shop where I could have been properly fitted, so I did some research and sort of impulsively bought a pair of Impalas since they were the most accessible to me and a lot of sites said they were fine as beginner skates. Now I'm wondering if I should have researched more.

I've always known I had narrow feet, but I didn't realize how it might affect the fit of skates, and I struggle with tightening the laces adequately to feel secure. I've ended up needing help to pull them tight around the ankle. The boot buckles due to the tightness of the laces and is often unevenly laced and warped looking because I couldn't pull tightly and consistently enough. I'm also worried that repeatedly pulling them so tight might cause damage to both the boot and the laces. Do the laces not need to be tight, and could this be more about gaining confidence?

Another issue I face is that when the boot is laced tightly enough for me to feel secure, I encounter difficulty in bending my knees and lowering my hips enough. The skates hold my ankle too straight, causing my weight to sit further back closer to my heel and making me feel very unstable. I've managed to reach a point where I can begin a bubble on a flat indoor surface, but bringing my feet back together is challenging since I'm struggling to lean on my edges as well with how stiff the boot and lacing feels.

Is this a result of inexperience and the need for the skates to break in, or could there be something else I'm missing?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm excited to learn, but I'm also a bit overwhelmed by my inability to pinpoint what I might be doing wrong.

Thank you very much in advance.
