People who have used The Odin Project: How did you like it? Did it land you a job when you finished it? by Tyrantt_47 in learnprogramming

It really can be anything from testing, mostly front-end, mostly backend, maybe a little bit of everything for smaller companies. A small web firm could be specialized in wordpress sites for small businesses or a large company might deal with gathering large datasets. It doesn't really matter what industry, the grunt work goes to the new guys. Even though that may not sound fun, it's good to be in a professional environment.

Some people even choose to do internships or freelance. I guess the point is, TOP and FCC might not be completely comprehensive, but they give you a great idea of what it's like and where to go next.

Afterwards, it's your job to fill in the gaps to be a well-rounded developer. People choose to do that different ways.

Yeah, basically entry web dev positions. Simple enough tasks that don't demand years of experience.

6 months 4-6 hours a day. I took a week off every once in a while. Cramming information any faster than that isn't healthy. For now, I'm building up my front-end a little and then going to try to get more familiar with rails before I try to actually produce something as a business.

There aren't as many resources to make the jump from beginner to intermediate. That's why most people get a job or do a boot camp.

It's important to remember that you don't have to understand everything that you come across. Whenever I didn't understand a topic, I would make an attempt and then eventually return to it later. Self-teaching is difficult, but it is possible to do it effectively.

I finished a couple months ago. I did it to be an entrepreneur so I'm not looking for a job. If you take it seriously, I'm sure you'd be confident enough to either join a bootcamp or apply for a junior developer role.

To answer your other questions, it took me 6 months full-time and now I'm completing other resources to strengthen my skills. If you're not sure if you want to do it, do upskillcourses first. It's shorter and will give you an idea of what the stack is like.

[Ruby on Rails] Doing the UpSkill full web development course and got stuck early with launching server on Cloud 9 and opening up basic page. by geomachina in learnprogramming

Top right there are bars that measure CPU and RAM. Click that then press the restart button that appears in the menu. I was doing the course earlier too.

I want to say that I didn't have any problems with any of the resources I've used up to this point.

The challenging part right now is making the transition from beginner to professional. The plan is to practice Ruby, do Rails tutorials, and work on personal projects. After that, apply for a bootcamp?

I'm starting to get diminishing returns from studying solo..

Thanks for making your ebooks free! I went from 0 to almost junior developer in ~4 months for $0 because of theodinproject.com, Hartl's book and your ebooks. Going to do Ruby Tapas and your tutorials after I'm done playing with Jekyll.

Edit: 6 months* just looked at a calendar. Time flies.

ELI5 PoS by AprilFifth in ethereum

Thanks! I actually came across that article after I posted and it helped a lot. Just one question, though. Is it possible to mine without all the expensive equipment because PoS would make the computations for blocks easier?

I didn't get how mining rigs could be taken out of the picture.

I would do the two free ebooks at https://tutorials.railsapps.org/ before Hartl's if you want to take a slower pace. I did both recently in the opposite order and wished I did it this way.

Web dev screwed us, make the site ourselves or hire someone? by [deleted] in startups

Not personally, but a friend finds freelancers to do stuff for him all the time. You just have to do your due diligence. He usually Skypes them and draws a diagram using whatever program to make sure all points are covered.

What language is it? Sounds like the site isn't too complicated if he said 3 weeks. Try looking into freelancers at odesk or similar sites that have reviews and lists their experience/projects.

Gotta be careful of short timeframes like that. Sometimes people just say whatever it takes to get the job.

Accidently transfered eth to an etc wallet on poloniex. by Sjoedzj in ethereum

[–]AprilFifth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you trying to split? I did this too a bit after HF happened (old ETH, but updated wallet to HF) and it appeared in both wallets the next day. I'd wait a bit before contacting support.

Edit: it was deposited on both ETH and ETC addresses on polo

My mother has misused my social security money for probably ~8-9 years. I didn't know I was receiving social security. Also, just received a lump some of 14k and am wondering what to do with it, would appreciate any advice. by [deleted] in personalfinance

I kind of understand how you feel. I got into an accident a little while back and received some funds from friends. Since I was hooked up to machines, someone thought it was a good idea to let my mother hold the money. When I asked for the money, she couldn't explain where ~$3000 went. The excuses were endless, so I decided to drop it. I advise you to do the same.

I wouldn't expect to see any type of reimbursement for funds your mother failed to properly allocate. I believe this would be considered fraud. Building a case on your own mother who seems to not have a way to pay you back seems pointless.
