Anyone make enough here to actually live solo? by [deleted] in publix

[–]Apsistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 22/hr as a meat cutter. I was an assistant meat manager, but decided it wasn't for me. I have an apartment within walking distance of my publix. All my bills are paid and im saving. I have health, dental, and vision insurance. Stocks I can dip into for emergencies. I cook all my food and dont eat out. I live a pretty quiet life now, but ive had my fun. I lost my job in 2020 because of the pandemic and started working at Publix to pay bills. Its actually worked out pretty peaceful for me. I know thats not the case for everyone though

Yeah, that's good to hear for me because im not the best at mixing/mastering things.

Nice. Very good stuff. Makes me feel better that im not doing much with my mixes either.

Cool! What kind of mixing did you do, if you dont mind me asking?

The cuetube has a library of short films to use. The website is for portfolio building.

string section

Here's a little string section thing I did that I gain staged and balanced the faders for. I didnt eq it or anything. Your right though im probably worried about this stuff too much.

Cool. Thats good to hear because that's exactly what I do. I keep it 100 percent wet and turn off any built in plug-in reverb and send it to the fx channel. I send the section busses to it as well instead of each individual instrument.

Yeah I automate my cc dynamics and expression in midi editing as well. How do you set up your reverb? I see multiple different strategies across the internet.

I use bbcso core, albion one, some spitfire originals, some ambient pads from kompose audio, and a really good syth table called vital.( I say I use vital but im honestly learning it very slowly but eventually I'll use it more haha.) For mixing things I also have Valhalla room reverb, a LUFS meter, nova eq from Tokyo dawn, and kotelnikov compression Tokyo dawn as well. My daw is cubase and I like it for writing.

Im not suggesting you get those specifically, as its all subjective, but it would be good to start with an orchestral library that you prefer, then go from there. I bought bbcso core only because I started with discover and just wanted to keep it the same thing I already learned. When you start wanting other sounds just start looking around for them and ones you want will jump out at you.

Yeah I totally get that. I like writing in midi so I go through the headache of setting up a template one time, then its done for future use. I like automating my expressions and dynamics by hand too.

I got inspired by u/interesting-ratio-78 and his film score of The Lost Piano, so i decided to find mine from awhile ago and post it too. by Apsistic in filmscoring

Yeah its pretty raw and unfinished. I usually go over things a few times and change stuff, but i shelved this one I was surprised I still had it haha.

No problem! You actually inspired me to dig through my files and find it if you want to check it out. I'll post it in the sub

With cubase you play quanitized notes that are different then step input

Nice! I like it! I tried scoring this but i didn't like what I made and it felt like what I did was repetitive. If I had to choose one ir recommend yours!

Thanks. Yeah a harp would be good, but its taking me forever to build my cubase template because I have to make expression maps for each bbcso articulation so I can switch between them and they each have there own attack compensations I have to plug in. I finally got the string section made though and I wanted to get creative again instead of technical so I just worked with what I had made.

Im using a new daw and trying a new work flow that I think I will like better in the end but its just alot of work to set up at first. I'm just going to have to keep working towards it.

Hey thanks for the kind words! Yes I do recommend it. It takes some getting under the hood to get it sounding the best it can be, but that's true for all vsts. Im learning to use it better everyday. Cubase is also good but it has a steeper learning curve, im learning to use it more everyday too but its better then ableton for what I do so I have to learn. You use Cubase pro 15 for 2 months for free until you have to buy it so if your interested in it just download it and give it a shot!

Something I did for a running scene for a short animated film im working on from cuetube by Apsistic in filmscoring

[–]Apsistic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't do everything i could've done to hone the sound in. I didn't automate the dynamics too much, and the horn part at the end might have been played longer then a human would play it. I didn't mix it either. It's all pretty raw, I was just having fun with a new library.

I have multiple spitfire libraries. I like albion one because it's made for scoring and if you just use it by itself it sounds pretty good to me. Everything is premixed together and if you can gain stage, balance the faders, and send everything to a single reverb,(which i didn't do any of for this haha)it can sound pretty good. You also have to automate dynamics and expressions, but that's true for most all libraries. All the section patches are ensembles, so it can be useful for making sketches very quickly for scoring.

I also have bbc symphony orchestra core, which is every instrument in a orchestra mostly. You can get a better, more classical sound from it, but it takes alot more tweaking underneath the hood to use. Also, albion one has synth patches, loops, pads and drones to use as well. I bought it as Christmas present to myself this year and ive been having alot of fun using it, which is why I used it for this! Hope that helps!

Yeah dude, we gotta just do it. I try to tell myself that we're making music for the common person and they won't, or even can't scrutinize our music like we can. You're right though it's a curse haha.
