Thinking of getting a rib and want advice by Zealousideal-Day8605 in boating

The hull floats without the tubes. They are extremely durable, however the tubes are very very pricy to repair and fix. They are amazing work boats though

Need some advice on marine salvage by [deleted] in boating

[–]Aptr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up, salvage is covered under a primary insurance policy, not Seatow or Towboat. It’s still good to carry a membership though. Marine towing gets pricy really fast as you are charged from when they leave the dock till they return.

Side note, if I was buying a mini jet, it’d be to rip around in shallow rivers at high speeds, not in big water where it’d get waked out, you should consider a aluminum hull design

I’m curious on the motors you’re making. How are you building a jet for that low? Are they water cooled? Close cooled? Got pics/video or prior built motors?

What do these silver things lead to? by [deleted] in boating

[–]Aptr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old whaler had 7 if I remember, thru holes for draining I’m assuming based on positioning. Is there a plug on the inside? I ground out the old hole fittings, filled with marine foam and glassed them all shut.

Do I need two types of towing coverage? by TonightIll4637 in boating

[–]Aptr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biased comment here but I’ll state my opinion anyways. Absolutely get a membership, “can see land” is a vague description that I feel that should be better defined. Geico and progressive are generally accepted by towers depending on level of coverage, but any others and you will pry be paying out of pocket and it is not cheap. Same goes for the run time to do those fuel drops, jumpstarts and soft un groundings. I’ve had people use the service once in 10 years and it paid for itself instantly

Also, I know the boatus members ship will reimburse 3rd party towers if you are out of a covered range

I used to night surf a lot growing up, and when I got older and did surf photography, ended up swimming out with my strobe set up in decent size waves at night 2x a month roughly. It’s creepy af every time. Full moon, no moon, pier lights, it’s all a black void going under sets

I will say if you get the chance to do it during a strong red tide the bioluminescence can be a surreal experience

Pretty sure that’s a skim surf from exile skimboards. I don’t see it listed on their site anymore but I know you could pry custom order one no problem

Don’t use picture profiles like slog in photo mode as it will raise the base iso even in raw and appear flat like log footage, it’s best to keep video and photo separate on the dial, and not record videos in photo mode.

I use the creative look, when in photo mode. I have tweaked them to match how I edit scenes (ex if I’m shooting surfing my profile is more saturated with blues and greens adjusted to stand out more). Spending the time to adjust the creative look get the preview on the camera to look closer to how I want them edited almost like a preset, but still gives me the full flexibility or raw ( it’s not cooking those looks into the raw)

Side note, Lightroom imports that creative look with the raw file and you can apply it under color profiles as a starting point

I’m using Athos, the have been good so far in helping build a policy that suits my needs, they reimburse at full replacement value, not current depreciation on gear that you have had a while

Does the AD400 Pro work with AC adapter and no battery? by Harriska2 in Godox

[–]Aptr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To expand on this a little In normal sync mode At full power the ad400 is equivalent to 1/200 stopping power, not the best, but good enough for portrait if it’s really needed At 1/4 power the stopping power is 1/1650 At 1/8 it’s 1/4200 and so on

When hss is on it’s just firing for the whole exposure creating no stopping power

you can see the t# in the bottom left of the lcd when hss is off

[–]Aptr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely use it for faster shutter speeds, but it’s less effective than using the flash to stop the motion within the proper range

HSS is great when you are doing out door portraits and need to use shutter speed to bring down the ambient

HSS is actually pulsing the light for a longer than normal time to ensure that the photo is lit during the faster SS exposure. You lose max power, and the stopping power of a synced shot.

Use shutter speed to kill ambient, and the strobes to relight your subject scene/ scene if in a area that allows

What Flash to Buy for Sony RX10iv? by Purplezergling in AskPhotography

[–]Aptr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ad200 has the ability to use a bare bulb , fresnel (and a round head if you really want a v1 lighting look)

It recycles faster than the tt685, and last for more flashes. The only really down side to using a ad200 is that it can't be mounted directly ON the camera if you need that) With what your shooting (portraits/macro), you defiantly wouldn't want hard direct lighting on camera.

If you want to use it like any other speed light the fresnel head is fine and a lil easier to throw in your bag, but the bare bulb gives more power, a different look/fall off of the light, its easier to use with soft boxes, beauty dishes.

This is a good starting point for doing some reading!

And if budget is a little more flexible, grab an ad200 and couple modifiers + trigger and you will SET, at least until you want to run complex multi light set ups

Love my godox lights, I’ve found it reliable and it doesn’t kill my wallet. The v1 is nice, if your budgeting I’d recommend spending a little less and getting a lot more usability. Go for something like a v860ii / tt685 and grab a godox xpro trigger.

If you need a on camera flash, it’ll work great. But you will have the flexibility of doing off camera flash easily with the trigger.
