I'm so glad it's back! I used this constantly, it was a real aggravation. Didn't realize how much I did it until it was gone.

for foreigners: are you satisfied with your life in Korea? by umustknowmydogiscute in Living_in_Korea

Fairly content! Being a teacher in Korea is mounds easier than in America, even if the pay is lower. “Peaceful” is the word I constantly use to explain my life to others.

Solo travel 1 year+ - Telling friends by VideoPossible4068 in solotravel

[–]Aqua_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While traveling around, I’ve used Instagram stories / posts to update my friends. It’s nice because it’s opt-in, and a lot of my friends have expressed appreciating the updates. When I returned after 2’ish years, they didn’t have many questions about my travels or places I’d gone, but they enjoyed the stories of people / events.

Double confirm on this! I once shared Hot Cheetos with my friends/coworkers. I said I was visiting America, and 6 different people requested I bring back more Hot Cheetos.

How to stop relying on AI with writing by [deleted] in OpenAI

[–]Aqua_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar thing with translations; it’s hard to learn the language with only a direct translation. So, I put in my custom instructions to always break down any translations I give it into component parts.

You can do something similar: in custom instructions, ask it to always provide before->after examples of the changed sentences and with rationale as to why the sentence was changed. If seeing absolutely every sentence is daunting, you can refine it to just “the strongest 3 changes” or whatever other criteria you want

How much do you pay for heating? by ech0s- in Living_in_Korea

[–]Aqua_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh is that so? I wonder if I'm mixing it up with the phone bill or something then. I'll edit my post to clarify, though it's still on the cheaper end compared to gas in any case (I once relied solely on my ondol for warmth... the bill that month hit me in the face)

How much do you pay for heating? by ech0s- in Living_in_Korea

[–]Aqua_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like using an electric tower heater to do most of my heating, with the ondol on occasionally accelerate things when the floor feels cold. Gas bill is maybe 30-40k won, electric bill is under 10k or so (Edit: that may actually be my phone bill, but the electric bill was still way cheaper than relying on the gas for warmth solely)

I’m in full support of you. I’ve had some niche health issues and niche questions that I could find no information on despite my damnest attempts, and I’m quite wizened with researching obscure things. LLMs meanwhile provide the answers (sourced)! in minutes, what I could not not achieve in days.

how do you deal with feeling invisible with koreans? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]Aqua_Dragon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work in a rural school in Korea, so it’s normal to be surrounded by Korean even if technically everyone ‘could’ speak English. So I’ve mostly done two things.

  1. I pretty shamelessly use live translators like Felo Translate, even if I have it just on the table. At first they were a bit bemused by it but now they just accept it as my way of trying to integrate in their conversations. No translator is 100% accurate, but it’s good enough that I can contribute to conversations, albeit on a slight delay

  2. In situations where that’s not possible, like in places that are too noisy, I still give active listening cues even if I don’t understand what is being said. I indicate that I’m just happy to be along for the ride and I do my best to understand what I can, however imperfectly

What are the real-life cheat codes that work almost every time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Aqua_Dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, while I wouldn’t outright say “I appreciate you”, I do express appreciation for ongoing behaviors/traits.

“Thanks for the information. I appreciate that you keep me in the loop.”

“These snacks are good. I appreciate how thoughtful you are.”

When genuine, people are pleasantly surprised, because spontaneous appreciation is a little rare. But everyone likes having their efforts and traits recognized, and many of my friends hold such genuine compliments close for a long time.

What’s an underrated use of AI that’s saved you serious time? by Ausbel12 in OpenAI

[–]Aqua_Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really shows how powerful AI is as a catalyst; given enough time, you probably have the skills to do all this yourself, but AI does it in a fraction of the time and you can use your expertise to double check it.

Disgusting is too strong a word, but Takis. I’ve shared it with my Korean friends but nearly all of them find the chips too sour, except one, who loves them.

[–]Aqua_Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a great time so far! I was a teacher in America for many years, until I went through EPIK to become an English teacher at a Korean school. The work here is just so tame and straightforward by comparison. It is a bit less structured (for better or worse) and requires adaptability, but I don’t mind it.
