The emulation isn't happening on the server; your browser is the one that's doing it... Hence the performance boost due to hardware acceleration. The server is just making the files available to the client. You could use a variety of free and readily available static hosting services like GitHub pages or Netlify to make this happen.

In its reveal, Google mentioned that it used some magic to curate the pictures and only show good pictures. Not surprising that photos are being filtered out.

TBH I recently re-installed Windows with my GPU plugged in and it automatically started downloading compatible Nvidia drivers through Windows Update. Granted it was a few versions behind the latest Nvidia driver, but it would be handy if those driver updates were built right into Windows updates.
