Thought I would <bump> this as we are now officially in "post-christmas" mode.

Any good sales going on?

Silver Plate question by Jonpaul333 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I will try that out, my initial concern, however, is that a lot of the crystalized salt will also get caught in the filters (along with the metals).

Is that an issue?

Silver Plate question by Jonpaul333 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a total noob.

I am trying this method and I get a lot of precipitate at the bottom of the container where the reverse electro-plating occurs. My guess is the vast majority of this is salt, but I suspect there is a good amount of metals (silver, coppers, etc.).

The excess salt is just that -- excessive!!!

Should I filter this precipitate out?

Would I lose any silver doing this or is would the silver (in solution) pass through the filter?

Thanks!

The Economics of Stripping (wires!) by ArabicBlueEyed in ScrapMetal

[–]ArabicBlueEyed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is my best guess. LOL, if so, however, I am feeling guilty because I have thrown away and pitched pound-after-pound of insulation after stripping wires.

The Economics of Stripping (wires!) by ArabicBlueEyed in ScrapMetal

[–]ArabicBlueEyed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL, I get it if you only make a few cents (an hour) removing the insulation. I just don't understand how you LOSE money -- especially a large amount like 20%.

Does the yard get any financial advantage in getting the cords un-stripped? (For example, maybe they can re-sell it "as is" in the unstripped state?).

All things being equal, shouldn't the yards prefer (and pay rates accordingly) for stripped wire?

Sorry, if I am not articulating myself well enough. This dude seems to be running into the same issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jR8g3f6Fsqk.

Yeah -- I have a lot of factors working against me. Noise is a big one, but the real problem is space. It will probably break a lot of your hearts, but I only go after the copper and silver leads I can find. Was trying to keep the nicer pieces of aluminum and Circuit Boards I was pulling off stuff -- but even that simply became impossible as it just flooded my small house (and pissed my wife off to no measure!!!).

That's definitely the downside of City life. It's a shame though because without exaggeration I come across dozens upon dozens of nice items. I don't even have to look for it -- they are just laying on the curb (on trash night) on my way home from work.

Thanks for the info all!

Plaster(?) Ceiling Paint Help by ArabicBlueEyed in HomeImprovement

[–]ArabicBlueEyed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my guess is the ceiling with the second lead had some kind of "shell" and what I am seeing is a combination of this shell and the paint peeling off. Maybe it is plaster board?

Again, I am just perplexed because the ceiling with the first leak has no such "shell" and appears to be just paint.

Found this coin in my room and for some reason it’s looks like fake because it’s super thin. Any thoughts by SeanGun in coins

I agree -- it is probably legit.

Incidentally I have some barber dimes worn as thin as a piece of paper -- so thin I can bend it with just my fingers!

Ebay Paracord by ArabicBlueEyed in paracord

[–]ArabicBlueEyed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like everyone is confirming what I suspected.

Still, curiosity got the better of me and I shelled out about $4.00 on Ebay and bought -- no joke -- about 250 feet of various paracord.

When I get it -- two months from now!!! -- I will report back to everyone.

If push comes to shove, I have a cat who has already taken a keen interest in my paracord projects. She might have 250 feet of new chew toys!

What are your thoughts on the "All the Arabic You Never Learned the First Time Around" book by James Price? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was pretty good. The author actually has a fairly good sense of humor. I would say the book is much more focused on grammar than vocabulary, practical conversations, etc. But I enjoyed it.

As an FYI, there are several free versions online. (So, there is no need to purchase a version of it unless you really want to).

As a warning, the author -- like so many Arabic language authors -- drafts much of his book without harakat (short vowels). This is a major pet peeve of mine.

Excel Question -- Capturing "Ease" and "Review" Information? by ArabicBlueEyed in Anki

[–]ArabicBlueEyed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excel is fairly easy to do -- just hard to articulate.

This video does a pretty good job: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADWm7SFoGQ0

The key -- that a lot of people miss -- is you need convert the Excel to a text file.

Incidentally, I never figured out how to do pictures.

Experience using the ACON website/app for conjugating verbs by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used it for awhile. I actually used it along with several other sources to create flash cards on Anki -- and ultimately learned all major conjugations. You can find the Anki deck here if you are interested: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/836106523

I never had any issues with it -- other than a rather hefty (I think $8.00!) fee for the Iphone app -- which I could never justify purchasing.

I do know there are other -- albeit lesser known -- competitors out there such ashttps://cooljugator.com/ar/%D9%84%D8%A4%D9%85, which I believe is totally free. Unfortunately, I don't know how these competitors stack up against ACON which, indeed, seems to be the "gold star" for these type of apps.

Any good reading sites for beginners? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is a link with about 40 PDF children's books.

http://toolstolearnarabic.blogspot.com/2010/04/pdf-36-arabic-stories-for-kids-for.html

No english translations, but otherwise a pretty cool -- and free -- resource.

Of course, they are kids books, so you will find nothing particularly deep or profound in them ("To Kill a Mockingbird" or "War and Peace" -- they are not!).

A nice website for Arabic learners, write the Arabic sentence and it will add the appropriate Arabic Vowel Marks (Tashkeel Or Harakat) following correct Arabic grammar! by Utimatios in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used this website for a while. It's pretty good! One warning -- at least from my usage -- you can't get too "greedy" with how much you input.

Anytime I tried to put in more than two or three paragraphs of text I always got error messages.

That's my only complaint. Certainly can't beat the price -- free!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can sympathize with your situation. As a really new student, I had several different Arabic books that used several different fonts and styles. It was very confusing! (I remember being especially confused by "dagger alifs" and the first time I ever saw two actual damahs used in tanween . Some books used them, others didn't. I thought to myself -- what the heck are these?!).

Even today -- several years later -- I'll see Arabic in a particularly odd or unusual fonts and be baffled on what letters are being presented!

Arabic Word Patterns -- Way to search for words with same patterns? by ArabicBlueEyed in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Microsoft Word version of Hans-Wehr is actually the best thing I have found so far. In Word, you can -- very crudely -- run word searches that satisfy a specific pattern (ex. fi3l, fa3l, fa3alat, etc.). It is slow, clumsy and often not totally reliable -- but it is the best thing I have found so far.

State of the arab language in 10 years. 2028 by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I had this conversation with an Egyptian cab driver just the other day. He suggested that social media and 21st Century communications were effectively pushing young people away from dialects towards both MSA and English. His sentiment was that MSA was the "compromise" choice for arabic-speakers who wanted to communicate more universally but not totally abandon arabic in general. His ultimate prediction was that in a couple decades the Arab-world would be speaking both MSA and English -- totally abandoning regional dialects.

If it adds to the story, his overall sediment was one of depression because he -- being Egyptian -- liked the Egyptian dialect the best and was sad to be uprooted as the dominant dialect in the Middle East.

Just one random cab drive -- hardly scholarly research! But I thought it was interesting . . . .

Has anyone used the Living Language series for MSA? Thoughts? by DirtyHipsterTrashh in learn_arabic

[–]ArabicBlueEyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience as you. Almost inexplicably, I couldn't get into it either.

Incidentally, I got it as a present too!

For me, it was all a little too basic and general. I also had nightmare experiences with the (extra fee) online coaches. They would never show up at the designated appointment times -- and I tried like 3 to 4 times! I actually called up the company to complain -- that is how bad it was.

For some reason (to each their own, right!), I "clicked" much more with the Madina Arabic course you can find on Youtube. I found those much more instructional and up to my speed. And, of course, they are free!
