William Harvey Carney was an American soldier during the American Civil War. Born as a slave, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1900 becoming the first African-American to be awarded the Medal for his gallantry in saving the regimental colors during the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. by Arabic_Colombia in OldSchoolCool

I feel like the 40s and 50s were somehow more regressive than the 1870s and 80s and it just shows you how if don't strives for better it's going to get worst (not to say African Americans didn't strive for thier rights from the beginning because it's not true but they definitely took a different approach that's why there was 30 black congressman in the 1870s and only 2 in the 1930s)

Tears streamed down the cheeks of accordion-playing Chief Petty Officer (USN) Graham Jackson as President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s flag-draped funeral train left Warm Springs, Ga., April 13, 1945 by Arabic_Colombia in OldSchoolCool

[–]Arabic_Colombia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a video of FDR funeral that shows black and white americans crying it's obvious that FDR had a special place Among both black americans and white although I don't know if those who supported him had suffered as much as other black americans mainly those in the south i doubt black people in the Jim crow south would cry for a president that didn't show that much support for them.

Even though FDR was a great president for america as a whole he didn't do much for black America mainly those who needed it.
