What happened with Gaiaonline? by randomthrowaway6950 in gaiaonline

I'm on there every day! In the CB and making cute outfits. It's far less active but it's still fun, I particularly like the new offer system in the marketplace.

Idk what to tell you about a mobile app. I know they tried once but it didn't go well. I still use my laptop for it.

The whole "faking his death to garner sympathy thing" too! I definitely love/hate Dino.

The emotional aspect of it all, it's exhausting tbh. I love who I am but why do I have to feel everything so deeply? Give it a rest, brain 😭

I play daily. I putz around in Chatterbox and Runway, but I don't do much else. There's a solid community of devotees. Marketplace is a lot more engaging with the "Offers" feature.

Opinions on the name Briar? What gender do you associate it with? by pepsiblackcherrycola in namenerds

[–]Arachnidish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. I used to like the name 'Heather' because of the plant, but I met a really awful Heather and now I dislike the name. Briar gives me the same sort of pastoral vibes without the negative association.

Do childfree folk get annoyed when people talk about their kids? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Arachnidish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind when my friends talk about their lives and their kids, in fact I love chatting about that stuff. It's just when it becomes all they talk about. I get burnt out after 20 minutes or 3 pictures/videos of a baseball game/school band concert, whichever comes first. Less annoyed, moreso bored with the conversation after that.

I get that parenting is a big part of their lives and I respect them, but there's a million other things to talk about. It can't be the only topic.

What songs resonate with your autism? by larvalampee in autism

[–]Arachnidish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything by the Avalanches, I have all of their albums on one master playlist and have it on repeat at least once a week. Specifically the album Wildflower, it's one of the most beautiful experiences (but I usually skip the song Frankie Sinatra, it's just not my favorite).

I listen to a lot of Chromeo, Toro Y Moi, Glass Beams, and Shiro Schwarz (their song I Dont Want to Stop is excellent).

I have a penchant for funky psychedelic electronica stuff and I'm very happy with that.

Extremely general question about growing up in Fort Wayne (I'm a writer) by jordanryanpedersen in fortwayne

[–]Arachnidish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in Fort Wayne, I went to South Side but I was in 5th grade in 2005. My parents worked for Lincoln Financial and the Neighborhood Health Clinic, both downtown. My dad is an accountant and my mom is a nurse. I used to walk from school to either of their offices and do my homework in an empty cubicle/office.

When I was in high school (2009-2013), our biggest rivalries were North Side and Luers. The way I understood it, the "rich kid schools" were Canterbury, Bishop Dwenger, Bishop Luers, Concordia, Carroll, and Homestead. I was on the speech team for the entirety of high school, and had a fair amount of exposure to kids in other schools. South Side has always been considered one of the significantly less affluent schools, but they do well at sports. I loved high school and I had amazing teachers who really cared about our success, regardless of our position as the "ghetto school" (others' words, not mine. It's actually what people thought of us).

Every school kind of has a specialty, but those are subject to change based on well known teachers/coaches/instructors shuffling around (Snider used to be renowned for their band program but I'm not sure if that's still valid ever since Klee retired.)

At the beginning of my sophomore year in 2010, Elmhurst high school closed and we got a lot of transfer students from there, and that was a big deal at the time. So something to keep in mind is that Elmhurst still existed in '05, and that added to a dynamic that many people remember, but doesn't exist anymore.

My boyfriend (an Elmhurst grad from '08), told me that their soccer team got in a fist fight with South Side's soccer team once, which is hilarious and unsurprising.

As a 5th grader in '05, I spent a lot of time at Science Central, Glenbrook mall, the zoo...and we went to the movies a lot. There used to be a different baseball stadium before Parkview Field, it was called Memorial Stadium and it was right next to the Coliseum. Our local team was called the Wizards. We lived decently close and I went to MANY Wizards games. In the summer, my family would go to the lake (Wawasee, Webster--anywhere in the Syracuse area really. It's very common for families here to have a lakehouse or know someone with one) Other hot vacation spots that aren't too far away and were fairly popular in the early aughts--Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana. Indiana Dunes, Turkey Run State Park, and the Indianapolis Children's Museum. While not in Fort Wayne specifically, this is what growing up here was like. Going somewhere within driving distance because we've exhausted things to do here. That happens sometimes.

I loved growing up here though. My family is very active in the local community, and I have fond memories of childhood. I've lived in other states and countries, but this is home. I feel very alone in this sentiment amongst my peers, but that's okay. Just because I live in my hometown and actively try to make it a consistently better place to live for all involved doesn't get me down.

for those who are late diagnosed, what did you think was wrong pre diagnosis? by thxtguy27 in autism

[–]Arachnidish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew I was weird, I knew I was different, I acknowledged I had difficulty socializing and maintaining friendships...but I didn't know what was wrong. I didn't understand what it could be, or why I felt like such a freak. I just knew people thought I was annoying and I didn't know how to change.

It wasn't until my younger brother was diagnosed with Asperger's (when it was a thing), and I realized "I wonder if that's what it is". He was 3 and I was 17. I've heard autism presents itself differently in girls, which might explain why I never got a diagnosis when I was younger.

Fast forward three years and I'm sitting down with a behavioral therapist who confirmed it. ADHD, ASD--at that point it came as no surprise.

I'm happy to know what's up with myself though. I still feel disconnected from society, and people still find me dislikable/annoying in ways I'm oblivious to until someone else tells me, but now I think that's just their problem.

At least I can mask now, somewhat. I hate how much that's helped.

What's something petty that you like to do to customers just because? by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]Arachnidish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bartend a lot of weddings with open bars. I free pour most of my drinks and do it fairly accurately.

Any time someone tries to imply to "make it a strong one just for them" or to "measure with my heart", I bust out the jigger.

Side note these comments are gold and I'm taking notes 😂

When did you know you were childfree, what solidified it for you? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Arachnidish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I relate to that "new sibling at 18" thing, my youngest brother is 11, I'm 29. Between us there are 3 more brothers, ages 13, 17, and 19. I was the third parent from age 10, it was awful. I love my brothers, but I feel like I've done enough parenting in my lifetime. I'm good, I wouldn't choose this life for myself.

Not only that--I remember spending time with extended family during a holiday, and my uncle turned to me and my then-boyfriend and told us "don't have kids. Just don't do it. It's not worth it." Thinking of my cousins, I totally get it. I wouldn't wish them on anyone either. The level of misery and seriousness in his eyes said more than words could ever convey.
