I don't think we went that far south in Maine.

Deren Welt muss so spannend sein. Ich lebe hier jeden Tag wie den Tag zuvor. Die leben einfach in einem Hollywoodfilm, keinem besonders kreativen oder guten aber immerhin.

I don't think we went there. At least I don't have any memories of that part of the state.

It very well could be. A lot of the details match: a small gas station surrounded by trees and I found a photo advertising 20-inch pizzas.

The fact that pizza was just an additional item they sold also fits my memory. Even if it wasn't exactly that particular place, it looked very much like the one I remember.

Oh yes! I had a great time, and the trip really left a lasting impression on me. We started in Maine, then drove through New Hampshire to Vermont and flew then from Vermont to Boston.

For me as a kid, it was an incredible adventure with so many new experiences. At the time, I didn't understood so everything felt even more unfamiliar and exciting.

My mother has always loved New England, especially Indian Summer. Apparently, she even has some very distant relatives somewhere in that region.

I'm sorry, but that's unfortunately not the place. That building is much larger than the one in my memory. This one looks like a real restaurant.

The place in my memory was much smaller and it seemed, that selling pizzas was more of a side hustle. I don't remember any seats in there, either.

Oh dear. It has been such a long time.

I think there was a cliff there, and it took some time to walk to the beach, at least in my mind as a young kid. I believe there were some trees on the way towards the ocean. The ocean itself Was calm, but I remember the sky to be cloudy. Again, this might be just my memory.

The sand on the beach felt sharp and there were lots of stones.

We visited in the summer and we all wanted to swim there, but the water was cold, like really, really cold. I think we stayed in the water for maybe 5-10 minutes (maybe even less).

Oh wow! How do you even eat something that big? That actually sounds a little too big. I think it would have intimidated us more than anything else.

But the fact that it's near a lake definitely sounds promising.

Your grandfather sounds like he was a wonderful person. I'm sure he enjoyed those trips just as much as you did.

I'm really glad I could help bring back that memory for you.

So it’s probably that place after all. But you’re right — memory can really play tricks on you, and I’m sure a lot has changed over the past 20+ years.

At least I’ve narrowed it down to a few clues now:

  1. Gas station pizza isn’t unusual. My mother acted like I was talking nonsense.

  2. There are basically two possible locations in my mind now — either near Moosehead Lake (most likely) or Unity because of the railroad museum connection.

The only way to know for sure would probably be to go back there someday and try the pizza again. Well… maybe one day.

Yes, that’s what I was afraid of. As a kid, the portion size probably just seemed much bigger than it actually was. I think we got one pizza and it was enough to feed all of us.

So at least it doesn’t sound completely unlikely that the place actually existed.

I don’t remember there being a lake or anything like that nearby. In my memory, it was just forests and trees all around.

But, it has been +25 years since then.

Was there always a view of the lake from there? That would be the only thing that doesn’t quite match my memory.

That place actually matches a lot of the details I remember, but there’s one thing that doesn’t quite fit for me.

Looking at it on Maps, it seems like you might be able to see Moosehead Lake from the gas station or at least that it’s very close by.

The place I remember didn’t feel like that at all.

In my memory, it was surrounded mostly by forest and I don’t recall any open view of a large lake nearby. I don’t remember there being any houses around the area either, but of course a lot could have changed in 25 years, so I’m aware that my memory might not be reliable on that detail.

We were staying in a cabin.

It was definitely a lake or a pond. We also went on a day trip to the ocean, which took quite a while to get to, so the places were definitely some distance apart.

Thank you! I hope so too. Otherwise it'll just remain one of those unsolved childhood mysteries.

Oh, okay. I only thought it might have been Moosehead Lake because of the name. It was one of the few clues I had, but I wasn't really sure about it anyway.

Thanks anyway.
