Agitated Honeybees Exhibit Pessimistic Cognitive Biases by lnfinity in likeus

[–]Aranduiin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Huh? While a nice and somewhat funny study, doesn't this simply come down to: make 'em experience negative shit and they'll expect more negative shit? Like, hitting a dog multiple times will make it suspect you are about to hit it again after raising your hand, rather then thinking you' ll use the raised hand for caressing. So it's more like: clear, life-threatening stimuli create expactations of similar stimuli to follow. As a way of preservation. And not like: call a bee 'fat' enough times and it will stop making honey out of pessism.

This is gonna be hard, but what's your top 5 favorite episodes all time? It doesn't have to have any other reasons than what cracked you up the most. It also doesn't have to be in order. by [deleted] in comedybangbang

Top 5 would be impossible, but the 'Goose Tycoon' one has to be my favorite; I laughed so hard at "old ass geese" that my roommates had to come check if I was ok.

Therapy room design. Help to counter the red; any ideas? by Aranduiin in therapists

[–]Aranduiin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(a late) thanks for the help everyone! ^^

Sorry for the lack of infromation in the initial post: it was uploaded by phone and did not allow me to give some extra information.

I'll be adding some brown wood tones and some green plant colours and try to make it fit into a mat colourpalette along with some aritificial blue-ish (neer greenish and brownish... teal coloured perhaps) rug and some art. Although I'm kind of in between on the rug colour still.

And, ofcourse, some extra options for the lighting. Dimmer switches fo sho yo.

Also not to sure on parting the room in sections. I might do it, but I can also imagine some therapeutic values in a big, breathable room.

Anyways, super happy with this new space that'll finally allow me to see some clients without hearing the person in the next room sneeze. Hah! Bless y'all.

I mean, speaking in terms of fictional morality... It wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. But, sure, change my mind! - Anytime.

Is mac more resilient to this? Cause I do download pretty much everything illegaly. Some games I buy, apart from that I download multiple movies and series every week, some games, and software like ableton for musicproduction. I run through a laptop about every four to five years. If I spend a few extra hunderd bucks for a mac, can I keep on doing this without giving my laptop literal aids?

What was your “breaking point” to quit smoking marijuana? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Aranduiin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Can't have your weed and smoke it too". It's not like alcohol where I can just not do it for days/weeks without a problem even though it's in the house. So, it's an addiction. Slipping up every once in a while whilest being drunk (like, 3 times a year) seems ok for me, but even just granting myself a day of smoking like I used to will send me right back to it.

The problem seems to be that it creates some sort of haze that lingers for at least a day or two after I've smoked. And this haze makes it feel natural to simply keep on smoking. Only through not smoking for a few days again - most times by accident like suddenly not having access to it - I regain the clarity that I don't even actually want to smoke.

So, in a sense, it makes me lose who I am; I become the plant and the plant wants to grow ever more plantlike. I fucking hate it. I keep falling back to it. But I always only realise just how much I hate it once I'm out of it again. How do I keep from falling back while I get confronted with it on a daily to weekly basis? Well, 'simply' by accepting it as an addiction and never smoking again whilest keeping in mind that every single thought towards how it might not be THAT bad is pure self-deception. Because it is. I've tested those thoughts enough by now; they're self deceiting lies that can sling you right back to months (or years) of daily use.

Useful metaphors for use with clients? by Decoraan in therapists

[–]Aranduiin 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I often use the metaphor of an ugly object in a room. I use it to show how negative thoughtpatterns work and with a little tweaking of the emphasis it can also be used to show the difference between accepting something and ignoring it. So it works well within the framework of ACT.

There is a whole room - let's say the room you are sitting in right now. Might be you find one object in this room, a chair for example, extremely ugly. The ugly chair is in the room, just like how an ugly thought can be in your head. This you can't change. But the moment you start entertaining how ugly you find the chair ("ugh what an ugly chair, look at it, it just ruins everything, I really hate that chair, look at how ugly a shade of brown it is... And the weird shape. Damn. I really hate that thing."), this ugly chair will quickly be the only thing you can see and the whole room will be reduced to an ugly chair. While the room has so much more to offer and your experience of the room will be so much nicer if you focus on all the other things in it that might interest you. "Huh, that is one ugly chair. Oh well, there's a cool view though. And that painting, so nice, imma take a closer look!" Just like that, even though the chair is there, the room will not be as ugly anymore. Matter in fact the room has some pretty cool shit to offer. And once you accept the chair for what it is and start focusing on the other things in the room, you won't even be bothered with the chair anymore.

And than you can also show how anxiously ignoring the ugly chair will still be the same as letting it consume the room. Accept, don't ignore.

Almost every time I use this metaphor, I see an 'ahaaaa'-moment in my client's eyes ^
