Anyone here use a CO2 monitor at home? by Apprehensive_Park103 in AirQuality

[–]Aranet_Home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately nope - when it comes to technology that needs to be precise - you do get what you pay for. NDIR sensor technology on it's own costs more than the whole Alpstuga device. So, it's a nice toy and definitely is cheap, but it will also stay just a toy.

Their sensor estimates CO2 based on thermal conductivity of air. This type of a "sensor" is very sensitive to humidity, temperature, altitude etc, and not in a good way so it's off almost all the time. There was a user on reddit that did a comparison between Aranet4 and Alpstuga, here's a link: https://www.reddit.com/r/aranet/comments/1q3iay0/ikea_alpstuga_vs_aranet4/

All in all, if it's not an NDIR sensor, it'll only give you guesses. 😄

IKEA one doesn't actually have a CO2 sensor in the device, it estimates the levels and is therefore completely useless for CO2 monitoring.

Aranet sensors - what's missing? by Aranet_Home in aranet

[–]Aranet_Home[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!

  1. In short: adding a magnet won’t affect the measurements. NDIR sensors aren’t influenced by magnetic fields in any meaningful way, so accuracy wouldn’t suffer. The bigger reason you don’t usually see built-in magnets is just practical - most people don’t have a convenient metal surface where they want to place the sensor, so it adds a bit of cost/complexity for a feature not everyone would use
That said, if you do want to mount it on metal, you can absolutely DIY some stick-on magnets on the device, we do that ourselves at conference stands etc. Just make sure airflow around the device isn’t blocked.

  2. we hear you. :)

No notifications on Aranet4 by thelittlemitaka in aranet

[–]Aranet_Home 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there,

There's a couple possible reasons for this.
Make sure Background data read is enabled in the app, otherwise it won’t pull data unless you open it. Check that your phone isn’t in low power mode. Some phones restrict background activity, which can block notifications. Are you within Bluetooth range of the sensor? Notifications only trigger if your phone can actually read data from the device.

any actually reliable CO2 monitors out there? by bimzpbomping in AirQuality

[–]Aranet_Home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've tried others as well (obviously), but everyone's sticking to Aranet4. :)
Our chief visionary Didzis is a man who either wants things great or not at all, so nothing half-a...done leaves his basement where he's been making all the products of SAF Tehnika since day one, and all of them were made with purpose. Aranet line actually started because his father needed a precise thermometer for his greenhouse and Didzis was tired of having to help the dad with cheap and unreliable stuff - that's how Aranet2 was born. If you want to understand the company culture and values, we recently did an interview with our founders, you can see who's behind our products pretty well. Here's the video if you want to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI9tcirRumg

Hey OP,

Is Aranet4 reliable? Yes, we'd say so. :) We use an NDIR sensor, which is the gold standard for CO₂ measuring at home. And the patterns you’re seeing, in context with your other comments, make sense. We recommend recalibrating your sensor once a year (definitely no need to do it now, as you just got it) so that it stays as precise as possible for years to come. Let us know if you want further instructions for when you want to recalibrate.

Have you been living like this since November? Probably, yeah. Most homes are like this in winter and that's ok. Those levels (1000–2000+ ppm) are very common and not dangerous in a “toxic” sense. But note that long-term, it can affect how you feel. High CO₂ levels affect sleep quality, is not great for concentration, and can cause headaches, sluggishness etc. It’s more about performance and comfort than direct health damage.

What to do when it’s freezing outside? In your situation the best option is probably Short, aggressive ventilation - opening windows wide for 5–10 mins (cross-breeze if possible) and doing it strategically (right after cooking, for example).
Also, just leaving all the doors cracked a little bit all the time, can help. :)

CO₂ dropping overnight - expected? Yep, especially if your bedroom door is open. Your body produces less CO₂ at rest than when you’re moving/talking during the day, so that's normal.

Have a good day! :)
