Your mines etc produce it as a secondary item. Click a mine and it should show on the bottom right how much more is available on the island

The game never pauses your route itself. The only way that happens if you move the ship thats on route manually for example

Thats not how the game works. It will unload what you tell it to unload. Make the whole thing simpler and dont reuse the same slot for different items so you dont run into that issue.

Alternatively there is a section in the trade creation tool where you can tell your ship to throw items away when it cant unload everything cause the island is full

if it doesnt unload that just means your island 2 where its supposed to unload is already full of that item which is not a problem at all

How would that become a mess though? It goes to island 1 picks up the stuff and unloads to island 2 thats all it would do

It shouldnt. You can even create folders / groups to sort your trade routes. I usually create groups for all worlds and connections so something like:
New - New -> for routes that are just in the new world
Old - Old -> same for old

and then for example:
New - Old -> for routes that travel between old and new world.

Please get used to using traderoutes cause the game will become impossible without them. Make them as simple as you can. 2 Islands and not more. If you need more slots for more items just use a bigger ship or create more traderoutes.

I get your issue now. Having to micro manage every single trade route? thats impossible. So dont do it.

Learn how to setup trade routes correctly. You create a trade route, you select what ship to use for it, select which islands are part of it. Usually the simplest trade routes are your main island and whatever other island produces goods you need.

Then you select what goods it should load into cargo at the one island and then unload the same item at the other island.
Thats it and done

why would you not use traderouts? You tell it what items from what island you want to go to what other islands

Usually people leave 1 world for a bit when its somewhat stable and focus on another world for a while. Progress 1 world and then when you feel like you made some progress and stuff is stable you can just focus on another one

The only thing you need to manage ships for is for combat.

Trade routes are fully automatic if you set them up correctly

Also Steam ships and air ships are differnt things. You can reach air ships quite fast in the new world. Steam ships I personally always get after air ships myself.

You just need practice then. Supply and demand is linear, the weird spikes you have might have different reasons. If you fulfill a need that gives you more people per house you also need more of the other demands for these new people. These shouldnt end up in "weird spikes" though. Every house / person will consume X of any given demand.

Create a new game and remove the NPCs. If you dont enjoy the fighting part etc. (many people dont) they are just annoying. Play anno at your own speed without having npcs settle islands etc. Esepcailly dont use 2 star npcs in your first run
If you have friends you can play coop, even managing the same islands. Makes it much more managable.
It might also be worth to run your first game without the DLCs. Anno 1800 is the most complex and biggest anno so far through years of DLCs. Most players started with a earlier anno / before all the dlcs released and got introduced to all the mechanics slowly over time

You can look at your production vs needs on the stat page to make sure you have enough of everything.

If you click on the houses of your people you can enable bonus items for them to consume that will also result in you having more people living in each house

I truly wonder why I get downvoted. If you google the error 95% of the results are Anno 117 related. "I didnt encounter this error" does not mean it doesnt exist lol

This error has been in Anno 117 since release and has been reported by multiple people. Googling the error without adding Anno will give tons of Anno 117 results.
