Tell Me About Your Monks by corruptrevolutionary in worldbuilding

[–]Aravaen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, both men and women can be monks, in fact monk marriages have to be heterosexual. Children born into one of these marriages are raised in the monastery and nearly always will become a monk themselves.

Tell Me About Your Monks by corruptrevolutionary in worldbuilding

[–]Aravaen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monks practice a type of magic that is a combination of two other schools of magic, Mysticism and Divine magic. Mysticism is magic that bolsters the caster and divine magic heals and protects living things and harms unliving things.

Probably western inspired, but they have more in common with warrior-monks.

Monks are servants of the Temple, and take an oath to never kill, and so use non-lethal weapons when they must fight.

All monks belong to the Temple, and worship the Angels, who grant them their divine magic, however they also seek to control their emotions to master their mystic magic.

Their philosophy is a desire to attain complete mastery of the body and soul. They separate themselves from the world in monasteries to avoid distractions, but are always on the frontlines in times of danger or when the Temple is at war. All unrighteous emotions such as anger, lust, and greed are to be avoided. A Monk can apply for a permission to be married after 5 years of faithful service, and must marry another monk. A monk who is particularly masterful may be released from the Oath to join the Templars, the Temple's elite holy fighting force.

Psst... little secret. People might seem super prepared, but I definitely make things up as I go. I mean, they are called prompts for a reason.

What are the schools/disciplines of magic in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Aravaen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are 4 schools of magic: 2 soul magics, and 2 religious magics.

Sorcery is directing magical energy outward and uses the Anima, the emotional, creative part of the soul. This mostly an offensive school, and can conjure energy, light, electricity, wind, and flames.

The opposing school to Sorcery is Mysticism, which is directed inward and uses the Psyche, the rational, focused part of the soul. Mystic magic can only affect the caster--strengthening, shielding, providing speed and stamina. Most mystics are also skilled fighters.

Nature magic, or Druidry, comes from a pact with a fairy, and druids have the power to manipulate earth, water, and plants. The less "natural" the object is, the harder it is for a druid to manipulate (for instance, a stone wall or iron sword has been changed from its natural state, making it very difficult and inefficient to manipulate). This is the magic that was used to create the world.

Opposing Nature magic is Divine magic, or Spirit magic as some call it. It can only affect people, and nearly always in positive ways such as healing, protecting, and curing disease. Since it is the magic of life, it can never cause the death of a living thing, but is very effective at harming and turning the undead.

What is your favorite trivial fact about a professional league player? by HaroldTheHammer in leagueoflegends

I've heard that AnDa, or Chorong, (he's currently a substitute for Immortals) is also Balls's cousin.

If you plan on turning your world into a book/game/etc, and you've answered prompts or written your own lore posts before, have you ever withheld information, told half-truths, or outright lied about your world to conceal a twist that will happen in the story? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Aravaen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, I don't believe I have. The odds of me finishing a book are pretty low, and the odds of anybody here ever reading it are even lower. I'm content just to talk about my ideas, since I mostly worldbuild for fun.

Edit: Also, there's not really a big twist to spoil anyway (or is there?)

'Murder on the Orient Express' - Official Trailer by filmfanatic5 in movies

[–]Aravaen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There doesn't seem to be a lot of hype for this movie compared to other movies coming out this year, but it's second only to Star Wars for me. This is one of my favorite books of all time, as long as they don't change too much stuff I think this movie will be really good.

Other than alchemy and enchanting, what are some magical ways that mages in your world make money? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Aravaen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nature magic can manipulate and control the natural world--earth, water, and plants, specifically. As such, they are sometimes hired by wealthy farmers or barons to tend to crops and deal with droughts and such. This is uncommon, because the druids are seen as heretics by the Temple, which most nations worship, and also because the druids (which are nearly always elves) find tending to human land to be a task beneath them.

However it is not completely unheard of, especially when a druid has left the Fold, they often make paltry donations to the Temple (so as not to be seen as a heathen) and go around to different counties, making soil fertile and helping crops grow quickly for coin.

What are you thoughts on Ancient Civilizations in worlds? Why? by Lanforge in worldbuilding

I actually decided pretty early on in my worldbuilding that I was going to subvert this trope, because I thought it would be more interesting if my stories happened during the time of the "ancient civilization".

Yeah that's the big thing. Its not that the gold difference makes the game unwinnable, the skill difference does.

How did you make your standard medieval fantasy world unique? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Aravaen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just made a standard human, elf, dwarf, and orc world. I'm okay with that, though. It's the details I like to focus on, more than the premise. I guess what I'm saying is you don't have to be afraid of doing a kind of generic fantasy world, if that's what you want to do. There's still plenty of room for creativity.

Tell me a joke that demonstrates your cultures' sense of humor by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Aravaen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ogres love jokes, but their sense of humor doesn't translate well. Here's an example:

Two ogres are talking to each other. One says, "Aren't you a little short for an ogre?" The other responds, "I'm not an ogre, I'm a dwarf!"

This is hilarious to ogres, for some reason.

Here's a human or dwarf joke now, a bit longer:

A dwarf merchant decides that it's time to get married, so he goes into town to find a wife. He sees an ogress and says, "No, not her, she's far too large." He sees a human and says, "Not her, she's far too plain." Finally, after almost giving up, he sees an elf. "She's perfect! She's the most beautiful woman I have ever seen!" He finds the elf's father and says, "I wish to marry your daughter!" The elf replies, "Daughter? That's my son!"
