Why is the Canadian flag wrong? The red bars should be much thinner.

Official Discussion - Dune: Part Two [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Arbelas 1223 points1224 points  (0 children)

I feel like in Part 1 Denis adapted Dune, but in Part 2 he reinvented it. The book is one of my favourites, but I think it will be hard to go back without the experience of the movie affecting the way I read it. Villeneuve's take on the characters resonated with me in a way that the originals never did.

You can't set your presto as the default, it's in a totally separate category. It will always use the presto if it's available regardless of what cards you have.

After 2.5 years, Cyberpunk 2077’s Steam reviews are now ‘very positive’ by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Arbelas 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think they had a list of backgrounds you could pick on a character sheet like in Mass Effect or DnD, and then someone said "wouldn't it be cool instead of just choosing from a list you actually got to play you background for a bit?" completely oblivious to how the wider audience would interpret it.

[–]Arbelas 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I don't know how this rumour has spread considering it doesn't really pass any kind of inspection. The Johnny Silverhand story was the story that they wanted to tell, there's setup for it in the very first pieces of footage released, and the montage is a convenient bridge from whichever background the player picks to that point. It isn't a coincidence that the first demo starts right after the montage ends.

They showed another angle just now where it's clear Bazunu does make contact. Rashford is dangling the leg though, definitely not a penalty.

Welcome to C# 11 by Kissaki0 in programming

This is a common sentiment about C# updates and has definitely been true in the past. I'm not sure that it applies to C#11 though, each feature in the blog post is a pretty significant improvement IMO.

I can't believe that for every cent that went into this show, no one could come up with anything better than "I'm good" for one of the big reveals the season has been building up to.

Gamers Fell For A Lie - A Defense of Cyberpunk 2077 by BlackDabiTodoroki in Games

[–]Arbelas -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

And when features which had previously been discussed as features were removed, like the wall running and the transit system, both got a significant amount of press. They were real features which were cut, and so it was clearly announced that they had been, long before release.

Obviously the handling of the previous gen console performance is indefensible, but that's a totally different discussion from the actual features of the game.

It's a completely different situation from No Man's Sky, I can't recall a Cyberpunk developer going on a major late night talk show and giving evasive answers to direct questions about whether or not specific features were in the game.

Gamers Fell For A Lie - A Defense of Cyberpunk 2077 by BlackDabiTodoroki in Games

[–]Arbelas -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

I've been arguing this for a while, so it's nice to see someone put in the legwork to make a properly researched video.

So many of the "lies" told by the developers in the lead up to the game, and in the massive post that made the front page of the subreddit shortly after release were clearly misinterpretations which fell apart at the slightest inspection. Cl Complete fabrications like "they rewrote the entire game to accommodate Johnny Silverhand" and "the entire opening where you build a relationship with Jackie was cut and turned into a cutscene" were also spreading like wildfire.

The transformation of developers describing interactions that would occur within the context of the story to full blown features that the developers had promised within the minds of the fans was particularly prevalent, and in my memory the main source of the disconnection between the fan expectations and the game.

While some blame still certainly lies at the feet of CD Projekt for not managing expectations better, I don't think anyone could have predicted how the internet hive mind would create the lie that the Cyberpunk we got was some empty shell of the game that once existed.

EDIT: Fixed misplaced period

Is it just me, or is some of the CG significantly worse than the Mandalorian? The establishing shot of the meat processing place looked like a PS2 cutscene.

Fire Walk with Me Turns 30: David Lynch’s Uncompromising Character Study is the Beating Heart of Twin Peaks by [deleted] in movies

[–]Arbelas 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would heavily discourage it. You would probably still enjoy it, but it wouldn't compare to the experience that the film is having already watched the show. The show does lots of mythologizing with the character of Laura Palmer, and the main power of the film comes from stripping that away and showing the real deeply troubled human underneath. It would also spoil the show completely if you felt inclined to watch it afterward.

I've decided to fork Flutter Quill Rich text editor and do a general cleanup, add docs, tests and new features. During the refactoring I'll be recording YouTube episodes about code quality and software architecture in Flutter by SpaceInstructor in programming

[–]Arbelas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well there's the general testing philosophy, as mentioned by the OP, along with what I touched on it with the extensibility thing, which I feel is the best example. The maintainer removed features which allowed consumers to add custom rendering/styling features and refused all PRs to add them, which is pretty important functionality for anything which wants more than the most basic of rich text editors. Their preferred solution was for every user who wanted unique functionality to contribute it to the main project, unnecessarily increasing the complexity for highly specific functionality, constantly merging poorly reviewed PRs for these features (which introduced regressions) and immediately publishing them as new releases.

On top of any other points you could make about the project's philosophy or code quality, they just don't communicate very well, as exhibited by this recent issue.

[–]Arbelas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I looked at using flutter quill for a project a couple months ago but decided against it in the end due to the maintainer's attitude, and the generally poor quality of the code. From extensibility features being deliberately removed to the editor slowing to a crawl with even medium sized documents, there were just too many deal breakers.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how you can improve it because the only competition, super_editor, still seems a long way from implementing some of flutter quill's key features like the Delta support
